I have had the opportunity to stay at the Edition Hotel in London on five separate occasions, and it is with regret that I must state that each time, my experience has been progressively worse. While the hotel's location is a positive aspect, being conveniently situated just off Oxford Street and within walking distance of Mayfair and Soho, I am disappointed to report that several aspects of the property are unsatisfactory. To begin with, the lobby and bar area are very aesthetically pleasing, exuding an air of cool sophistication, and featuring a great selection of drinks and nibbles. The front desk staff are also courteous and professional. However, the common areas of the hotel are dimly lit, which can make it challenging to navigate, particularly in the elevator. Furthermore, the rooms are clad in a dark walnut wood that creates a minimalist ambiance that borders on being bleak. The size of the rooms is also quite small, and the bathrooms are rather basic, which is suboptimal for a hotel in this price range. Despite my affection for the Edition brand, I must say that the London location is the most disappointing of all the hotels I have visited. Regrettably, most of the rooms do not have bathtubs, and the views are not particularly pleasant. On my last visit, the shower in my room malfunctioned midway through my use, scalding me. Although the staff were apologetic, I had to insist on being relocated to another room, which they eventually did, but it did not feel like an upgrade. Furthermore, breakfast was not complimentary, even for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members, and the quality of the food was substandard compared to the exorbitant price charged. The eggs were overcooked, the sausages and bacon were tough, and the overall quality was average at best. Taking all these factors into account, I found the Edition Hotel in London to be highly unsatisfactory, especially when one considers the steep daily room rates of approximately £700 per night. I do not recommend this hotel unless there are no other options, as there are significantly superior hotels in London within this price range…
This is a detailed review so to cut to the chase, don’t waste your time & money staying here. There are so many better hotels in London. Do have a drink the lobby -- cocktails are fab -- or dine at Berners but this is seriously not a five star hotel room or experience outside of the lobby. I changed our reservation from another London hotel to stay here because we had such a fantastic stay at The Barcelona Edition. Huge mistake. First impressions were great as the lobby is stunning but that's where it ended. Corliss at the front desk was patronizing from the start. My husband asked her what the nightly rate was because he was going to PAY for an upgrade. Corliss very curtly & condescendingly replied, "You booked through Expedia so I don't have a rate." I booked through Chase Sapphire (in order to surprise my husband) but whatever. Apparently how you book determines how you are treated, or so Corliss believes. Overlooking her attitude, I asked if we could have a bath (reservation said shower or bath). She looked at her screen, then asked if we could wait until 4 pm. It was 3:15 & we had a gift to pick up so we said yes. She then added, "I hooked you up with the room" and my heart sank. I did not reply. We had this exact experience a few months ago when front desk clerk said similar about our room but it was dire & not the room we had reserved. We didn't get into the room until 4:55 -- twice as long as Corliss said —while waiting in the packed lobby and only five minutes before my husband had a meeting. He had to rush to find power supply and get on wi-fi. Two minutes after we got in the room, a blonde East European staff member bursts in -- no knock, nothing -- and said "Sorry! I didn't know you were in here. I have to check the lights. They were broken.” She ran in, flicked a switch, light worked and she ran out again. Unbelievable. The lighting in the room was annoyingly dim & there’s no way to turn up the brightness. While my husband had his meeting, I started a bath, only to discover once inside the tub that the bath plug didn't work so had to switch to shower. Then when trying to find an outlet for the hairdryer, I discovered the rug next to bed was soaking wet. My husband found it soaking on the other side too. Disgusting and disturbing. Now we understood why the wait for the room was 2 hours instead of 45 mins. A staff member came to verify the wet rug & then told us we’d be switching rooms. When a front desk staff came to show us to the new room, I mentioned the bath plug did not work & she said she KNEW. Thanks for the hook up Corliss. Our new room was a queen accessible with perfect bathroom for someone disabled but not for us -- one room with shower, toilet & sink all together in the same space and nowhere to put anything on the sink as it's just a basin -- no counter area -- so someone in wheelchair can easily access. A shower wet the entire bathroom floor. We were told this was the only room available. My husband asked if they could take the rug out of the previous room & we could return to that room. No dice. Neither the first room nor the second are five star standard. Worst than the completely inadequate lighting is the non-existent soundproofing. We could hear every word of an adjacent guest during his 1 am & 5 am phones calls, even after putting ear plugs in. The rooms was half the size of our room in The Barcelona Edition and twice the price. The first king room fit just the bed and a long narrow shelf table on the along the facing wall which you could just manage to use as a desk. Neither room had any suitable area to dry/style hair or apply makeup, which is prob why lighting is so bad. We had dinner at Berner's only because our guest wanted to. After our horrible check in/wait for room and then two horrible rooms, we really did not want to patronize the restaurant. However, the food was very good, albeit insanely pricey, $600 for 3 people (3 starters, 3 mains, 2 desserts, 6 cocktails). It's a beautiful venue but we didn't understand why the staff squeezed everyone together in one area of the restaurant leaving other areas vacant. We walked by a row of vacant tables near the windows and a circular booth that would have been perfect but we were squeezed in the back corner between two tables of four that were quite loud. The window tables & the booth remained vacant the entire evening. Service was ok but not the level you'd expect at this price point (my husband generously called it laddish, I found server thuggish) and we didn't expect to be rushed out the door because the waiters wanted to leave but that's what happened. The following morning we headed to Berner's for breakfast which Eirini at front desk comped due to the mishap with the rooms (had they comped dinner too, it still wouldn't have made up for the atrocious experience). We got there at 10:15 am to be told the breakfast ended at 10, quite confusing as the info in the room said 11. We went back to the room & ordered room service, which arrived promptly 30 mins later. The mashed avocado was cold and clearly made from frozen avocados (shine & lack of flavour are giveaways), the toast -- while proper sourdough -- was cold, and the poached egg was ice cold as if it had been taken out of the fridge. Luckily the black pudding was room temp as cold would have been inedible. I ordered two almond lattes but only one was almond milk. And after being tipped, the staff just left without setting up the table. Definitely not five star food or service. We had a wonderful day outside the hotel, a wonderful dinner elsewhere and returned for second night but couldn't wait to get out of this hotel. Even without the two terrible rooms, we cannot see how this is a five star hotel with inadequate lighting & soundproofing in small rooms, crap room service and front desk staff like Corliss. My husband had gone to get us drinks after our terrible room experience but the Punch Room here does not allow you to take drinks to your room unlike The Barcelona Edition. These hotels may be part of the Edition chain but they are worlds apart in terms of vibe, service and staff. The staff we encountered who were genuinely friendly, helpful & professional was only Eirini at the front desk, the entrance door staff and the bell staff. That’s it. There are far too many hotels in London to choose from rather than stay here. All flash, no substance, no thank you.…
There's nothing terribly wrong with The London Edition, but there's nothing terribly right either. My wife and I stayed for several nights recently and we were generally underwhelmed. It's a nice enough property (though I think the 5-star is quite a stretch, especially for London), and the location is great - it's in a quiet neighborhood just a few minutes walk from the hustle and bustle and crowds of SoHo. But the rooms are hit and miss, and overall it seems overpriced compared to other upper-tier hotels in the West End. There can be quite a bit of noise, depending on your room location, and in fact we requested room changes TWICE due to being placed directly opposite of staff areas where the doors were constantly slamming shut as people went in and out. Admittedly it wasn't an issue late at night, but if you're hoping to get a bit of rest during the day as we were (due to jet lag and time zone shifts), it can be very trying on the nerves. The staff was great at accommodating us though, and ultimately we were given a quiet room on a quiet floor. Bedding was comfortable, but the pillows were thin and flat in each of the rooms we had, so that is apparently their standard pillow. All of the rooms were relatively small as well, with very little work space if you happen to be on business and needing to work on a computer. It can be done, but it's tight. As other reviews have mentioned, don't expect ANY Marriott benefits - you won't get an upgrade (even though premium rooms and suites will be available for cash purchase on the website), and there is no lounge or breakfast benefit. Despite the carefully worded non-denials the management posts in response to other higher-tiered members' reviews, it seems there is enough evidence to suggest a deliberate trend with respect to room upgrades. For that reason alone, I would advise Bonvoy Elites to look elsewhere in the portfolio. But if you're OK with a standard room, not shy about calling out noise issues if they arise, and you can get good deal with points (we did, luckily), it's a nice property in a great location. I doubt I would stay again, but at the same time it wasn't a terrible stay.…
fantastic location near everything West End! hotel definitely maintains the hip hotel vibes, with a lively lobby bar as well as main restaurant, Berners Tavern. Breakfast was always a treat with exceptional service from Anna and Via, who always remember our entire complicated orders! a few room mishaps put a damper on the stay (noisy neighbors) but thanks to the support and understanding of from the excellent reception team (Eirini, Rodrigo and Kimberley) everything was sorted in the end. I shall return!
It's fun to stay in a hotel of your own city, and we enjoy spending our birthday weekend at London Edition in the past years. This time in particular, Gabriel and the entire front desk and customer experience team, went the extra mile to ensure our stay truly special. We have been upgraded to a lovely suite, and a sweet note with thoughtful gifts were waiting for us when we returned in the evening. Thank you team.
My fave place to grab a drink in London especially in the cold winter time! If you're lucky enough to grab a seat by the fireplace it's magical. Wonderful setting, great attentive service and well made cocktails. Cannot recommend more highly!
The staff! The staff! The staff! 11/10 They really made the trip for us, so wonderful and so helpful. It was a very busy time and you could see they were enjoying every second of the busy lobby and bar. Their interaction completed the vibe and continued for the duration of the stay. Well done to all We will be back
The hotel itself was swanky and in a good location. The hotel bars were decadent and Berner’s Tavern is worth a stop, even if for pre-dinner drinks. Unfortunately, the rooms were subpar. We received an upgrade as ambassadors, but it wasn’t much of a step up. The bathroom was outdated and could use a deep cleaning. The hallways also need a refresh, it felt like an outdated dorm hallway, definitely not a 5-star hotel look. There was also plumbing noises that were very loud on the second floor; we were not advised of this and only knew because we read about it via another review on Marriott.
I am obsessed with the place… not because it is perfectly located in one of the best neighborhoods of London, or because the place is immaculate clean, inviting and welcoming but simply because you cannot substitute human connection. From the curbside with those amazing guys at the door, to Nicko (forgive me if I am misspelling his name) who made the perfect gyn martini, Alexander who worked his magic and got us day-tickets to Westminster Abbey, to CARLISS at the reception who showed a genuine interest interest in us. Carliss truly listened and sent us these little (but not so little if you think about the thought and effort behind it) and delicious sweets from France and Germany along with booklets to top experiences to these both countries… WOW…. just WOW. Ahh, we’ll be using that disposable camera which just added that extra flare to our trip. These people and many others I did not get their names are the true gems of The London Edition - make sure you keep them as talent as such is becoming rare. Thank you to all. Cheers…
The good : Hotel location was great. Stone throw from couple of tube stations and Oxford St. shopping area. Berners Tavern dinner was fabulous. Staff are all polite and professional. The bad: The room was noisy, seems like inadequate soundproofing as I can hear the sounds from adjacent rooms. There are noise from the plumbing as well. especially when these adjacent rooms using their shower/toilet/basin. Bonvoy elite recognition was unfortunately very poor. As Bonvoy Ambassador member, I was supposedly entitled to a complimentary upgrade to better category room/suite. I didn't get that (a quick check on Bonvoy apps actually show the hotel still have all type of rooms/suites available for the duration of the stay). Furthermore , apparently the staff know about these plumbing noise issue yet I still manage to get the said room. I guess that is how the management value Bonvoy elites, by giving the worst room in the hotel. It's a pity as I stayed at other EDITION hotels and they were great. Doubt I would like to return to London EDITION in the future.…
