I stayed here for 3 nights. It was an easy check in process. The format of the hotel was interesting and the rooms are definitely compact but it suited me for a solo traveler. The room was clean but my big issue was the bathroom smelled musty. It goes away after a while but even with the exhaust fan in there, I don't think it's enough. My only real complaint about the place is definitely the sound proofing. You can hear every conversation people are having right outside the door and the next room's alarm clock. I'm lucky I stayed in the first floor cos I heard there's no elevator. I later read a review about the proximity to the tube station while great is a double edged sword because you definitely feel the vibrations in the ground. It wasn't really bothersome as it only lasted a few seconds. But this is my experience staying on the first floor. Probably something to consider for light sleepers. Also be warned, there's no AC but it's winter time when I stayed so it was fine. …
Stayed here overnight on our way to and from a rail holiday in Germany. The best thing that can be said for this hotel is that it is near the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras. The rooms were clean but the facilities were meagre and the layout of the hotel reminded me of a Parisian attic in the 1960s. No lift, the stairs were dangerous and, despite the notices offering help, there was not always a member of staff available to carry our cases. The double bed was not full size and there were no bedside tables. The rooms were noisy. The fire notices were not up to standard either. The staff were mostly friendly but the breakfast was rather sparse. We would not stay in this hotel again
The California is my go to hotel when in London. The rooms are super clean, the location is amazing for transport links for not only the city, but across the UK and Europe. The staff cannot do enough for you, and there is a wonderful cosy bar to round off your busy day with a night cap.
A lovely hotel close to amenities. Bar area is quiet enough if you have a business meeting. Breakfast area is downstairs in the basement. Beds are really comfy and although the small double room is very small, it has all that you would require and a nice big TV
We chose the California because the price was reasonable and, most important, it’s a quick walk to St. Pancras station, where we needed to catch the train to Paris. Our room was very small and close to street noise, and the stairs were tight, but it was fine. It’s a short walk to Russell Square and the British Museum; a longer walk (or quick Tube or taxi ride) to many of London’s other top tourist spots.
