My wife loves a nice night away so once or twice a year I treat her to a stay somewhere special. Billed as one of the top 5 star hotels in the world, “The Goring” seemed an obvious choice for her birthday. The hotel, room and food was lovely and certainly there were no major issues at all but at £1100 for dinner bed and breakfast I would expect something truly exceptional. Whilst there is the potential for this, numerous albeit small slips in attention to detail means that it fell short of what it aims to achieve. A warm welcome awaited us on arrival but immediately there was a small slip up with our booking for afternoon tea. Whilst our room was prepared we took coffee and biscuits in the lounge - a beautiful venue with an abundance of atmosphere. However again small cracks appeared on service with us having to chase the order of biscuits twice. We were escorted to our room and sadly the flowers I had ordered were not ready and after speaking with reception, they arrived 4 hours later albeit with a complimentary bottle of champagne, a nice touch. The bed was comfortable and the facilities in the room, beautiful. However tea making facilities are not provided and this must be ordered at an additional cost. A pre-dinner drink at the bar found a bustling yet cosy atmosphere and the mock tails have to be tried- the best I have ever tasted with a flash of showmanship. Sadly whilst warm and friendly the service at dinner again was not as slick as expected. We were on a dining package and were given the wrong menu. I pointed this out to the waiter to be asked to speak to the manager. When they returned to take our order I again had to ask for the correct menu as I was aware from reviews that there would be a more limited set menu. The food was exceptional and worth the wait. Whilst at dinner the room was “turned down” a nice concept but again attention to detail was lacking- our used tea left for us to clear. Breakfast was relaxed affair, the pastries were fresh and warm but again small details were missing- the conserves were not home made and coffee was delivered from a large flask rather than getting your own cafetière. Afternoon tea was stunning and the staff were attentive and forward in offering tops ups of anything in the menu. All in all a beautiful hotel but for me at this level, it is the attention to detail and that feeling of a truly special stay/welcome that was lacking which made it a good hotel but not in my opinion the exceptional or magical place it strives to be.

Dear MichaelP, Thank you for your detailed feedback, it is very helpful and I am sorry for the frustrations we have caused you during your visit. I will address the service and communication shortcomings with the relevant departments and I can promise you that this is not our usual high standards we are normally able to provide. Regarding the tea making facilities in the room, this is indeed on request however a complimentary service we provide so I apologies if this was not communicated to you that way Should you decide to return one day, which I hope, please do let me know personally and I can assure you that your next visit will be memorable for all the right reasons. Thank you again and with warmest regards, Michael

Hotel's Favorite
My wife and I had rather lofty expectations of The Goring based upon their reputation, and the service and charm fully exceeded them. Despite being nervous about the British formality we might encounter at The Goring, we could not have felt more at home from check-in to check-out at The Goring. The staff does an exceptional job at truly making you feel special during your stay. This is no more evident than being greeted by name when departing for the day and when arriving back in the evening, and when to retrieve our room key from concierge (this is no regular room key, which added to the charm). We enjoyed breakfast on multiple occasions in the beautiful dining area where the service and also the meal were outstanding. A must when staying at The Goring (or in London) is afternoon tea, which was a great experience. For those wondering (as I was prior to our visit), the dress code is smart casual. Two things that were more our personal preference than outright complaints were that our bed did appear rather firm (unsure if this is standard for all rooms), and the first night the room was fairly warm (we were there during a warm time in London), although it didn't appear to be as much an an issue during the rest of our stay. Overall, if you're looking for a traditional, timeless, and charming stay in London with absolutely exceptional service, a stay at The Goring should be on your (bucket) list. After all, if it is good enough for royalty, it should be good enough for the rest of us! Thank you again to the staff at The Goring for our memorable stay, hope to see you again.

Excellent stay over the weekend. Staff were attentive and helpful at all times. Checking with Alex and checkout with Georgina we’re faultless. The room was a little small and the bed an ordinary double only. Slightly surprised we had to ask for a hospitality tray to make tea. Our room was beautifully decorated and always serviced mornings and with a turndown in the evenings. The breakfast was excellent and good value. Had one snack lunch and this too was very good. Overall the hotel was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay which was value for money.

This is an outstanding Hotel and in the last month have stayed in 7 5 star hotels and lodges and this was very much near the top! The people are exceptional and ignore the tiny criticisms I see posted. It's truly a first class hotel with a VERY British feel. The people take pride in their treasure they care for. Afternoon tea is crowded because its so popular and everything is refillable and delicious and typically English. 5-7 minutes to the Palace, Hyde park and many great pubs! Perfect stay. Best drink I have ever had is shockingly their Rum Punch...amazingly complex. Many Thanks to everyone at the Goring

Such a disappointing time at The Goring Hotel on Sunday afternoon. We booked the champagne afternoon tea for six people. On arrival at 3pm, staff confirmed our booking, so we know we were expected! However, we were asked to sit in the corner of the bar area so staff could check that our table was ready, after half an hour we were still waiting. We wondered what was going on and why staff were ignoring us? Maybe The Goring found a group of six women a bit scary! We managed to get the attention of a member of staff and were eventually shown to a table. Hurrah we thought but as we sat down we noticed a dirty mark and long black hair on the table cloth - we had to point this out to staff before it was changed, this, after waiting half an hour for the table to be prepared. We then sat and waited but we weren’t bored as we watched staff show other customers to their tables and serve them champagne and afternoon tea. Again, staff studiously avoided our group until at 3.50pm we managed to stop a waiter. By now we were fed up. I could go on but I’ll stop here. All in all, a dreary experience. On a positive note, the young waitress who brought our tea was very nice and helpful.

I arrived excited to stay at The Goring, an iconic boutique hotel with a royal pedigree. The footmen on the door took my luggage and the check-in process was smooth and I paid a supplement for an upgraded room which had an excellent view of the garden. The room was lovely and overlooked the property's garden. The walls were silk-lined and the furniture a harmonious blend of art-deco styles. The furniture - with the exception of the bed - was very comfortable. The shower and bath in particular were excellent with lots of water pressure. It would have been helpful, though, if the room contained a minifridge and an iron. Unfortunately I had a fitful night's sleep. I woke 4 times during the night. I think this was due to a combination of the mattress dipping in the middle because of a zip and also because there were noises coming from the room above me. I was told on checkout that I should have rang down and the problem would have been fixed, but by this point it was 1 o'clock in the morning and I didn't want to make a fuss. The service was uneven, the footmen on arrival were very welcoming and accommodating but their presence wasn't always there. Similarly the housekeeping team went above and beyond to accommodate my requests .The turndown service was wonderful when I came back ready to sleep the room had been prepared with the curtains drawn and relaxing music playing. Whenever I rang for assistance, the phone was answered with my name. Unfortunately the service was let down on checkout when I was told that the tea I had been offered in my room came at a £15 charge - this wasn't mentioned and I had assumed it was complimentary. On checkout the assistant agreed to waive it although I had to explain three times that I wasn't made aware that this was chargeable and felt a little awkward. Finally, the rate I paid was the Goring rate which wasn't the best value for me - I had booked well in advance and believe I should have been eligible for a discount as I had pre-paid by bank transfer. The rate paid for indicated a complimentary newspaper would be provided, but this wasn't the case. It would have been lovely as well if the room had included breakfast. On the whole I had a very pleasant stay but it could have been made perfect (which 5 star should be) if these mistakes hadn't have happened.

My family and I had afternoon tea at the Goring and it was absolutely amazing! There were loads of tea options so plenty for peoples different tastes, and the sandwiches, scones and mini desserts were all delicious! Staff were incredible and really polite and the price was definitely good for what you get (and in comparison to other places). The ambiance is lovely too as there aren’t loads of tables. Would definitely recommend and cannot wait to return

We just returned to the Goring. It is like coming back to a warm and comforting refuge in a big city. The staff remains the high point of our stay. That being said, the room was cozy with a superb bed and linens. Breakfasts could not have been better. And oh the eggs! At dinner, the beef Wellington was outstanding. Having stayed at a number of very fine London hotels, the Goring is our favorite. They do everything so well.
