This 4-star review means 4.5 stars. It’s about 5-8 minutes’ walk from Bethnal Green tube station. I picked this hotel because we’ll need to take a flight from Stansted. It turned out that this is a good choice, especially at a time of the rail strike. A bus station is nearby (2 minutes on foot) and we took it to Liverpool Street. If you choose the National Express, Bethnal Green is the last stop to Stansted. The cafe near subway entrance is very good for breakfast or brunch. The hotel itself was very good. A bit of noise on Saturday night, but I was not disturbed. I slept well. Identified drainage problem in our shower. Staff responded quickly and got it fixed. Then, we left a small bag and noticed this after checking out. Called, and again it was quickly taken care of. Appreciated their help.

Stayed here for one night as had dinner reservation at Da Terra. Rooms are comfortable and a pool is a rare find in Central London. Feels like it’s focusing more on the serviced apartment side of things but perfectly fine for a short stay like this. Whilst we didn’t bring our 4 legged friend , also worth noting it’s dog friendly

I have stayed here as a solo traveller before. this time around it was the hotel we chose prep for our wedding. We were so pleased with it all. The staff so helpful, kind and made the whole stay very smooth. We had a prior visit to choose the rooms and the customer service was pretty good!

Nice easy location near the Bethnal Green tube station. Since it’s a converted building there are some good rooms and some ‘quirky’ rooms but the design is great. This my third stay at this hotel. I love the styling and location. If you’re interested in the touristy spots in London City and the West End this might not be the best location. If you’re more focused on the exciting food and drink scene in the East End and are only occasionally going into town this is a perfect fit.

After 30 years of travelling, this is my first negative hotel review. After staying here on many occasions since it's opening, our recent trip will be the last. The hotel is listed as a 5* hotel - and the prices reiterate this, however the service, level of cleanliness, amenities and general maintenance of the building and rooms do not level up to the rating. After a messy booking procedure booking and paying for a three person/one room stay, we arrived an hour after check in to find our room door open and a staff member informing us that the room door handle was broken, with no offer of a solution. We stayed in the room whilst it was being fixed but the noise of the maintenance led us to the bar. A substitute room was only offered after a protracted conversation with reception, where we were left none the wiser about how long the maintenance would take. We asked for another room. The substitute room was unusually hot and on the 2nd/3rd floor where we had requested a ground floor room. The bar was closed when we arrived 5 mins after opening time. We tried to re-enter the hotel corridor but our key cards refused entry. We were locked in the lobby with no way to exit. 5 mins later the tender arrived to release us and open the bar. When we asked if complimentary drinks would be available (two hours after check in), we we met with blank looks and no response, which we took as a no. 30 mins later (2.5 hours after check in) we asked reception if the room was now ready, and they had no idea. We returned to the room and the handle was not properly fixed to the door, although we were told by the reception manager that it was "totally fine. We asked for another room, which was then provided. The maintenance of the room was poor, crockery for 2 not 3 people and there was a sock wrapped around the ceiling smoke/fire appliance. No apologies were offered, it was apparent that not accepting the room with the broken door was an inconvenience to staff. At check out a 5% service charge was added to our bill without authorisation, after we had asked it to be removed. Reception staff whispered among themselves without greeting us at checkout, and once they had taken payment they handed back the card without any acknowledgement. We had to ask if everything was settled up. Reception staff are poorly trained and have no knowledge of the area/parking/amenities. We were told to "google" information.

Since 2016 we have stayed here regularly whilst visiting our daughter, but this is my first review. Our stays have consistently been very enjoyable and we just completed a 6 night stay in a spacious executive studio. The room is ideal for an extended stay and the entire building oozes style and heritage. The breakfast is good, although the range of options is rather limited. Service is friendly and effective, both for breakfast and at the reception. We will definitely return.

Amazing characterful hotel, with rich history and stylish accommodation. Excellent service - stayed for only a few nights for my 40th and was treated like a queen. Love the pool. Just super chic and loved it. Want to come back as a birthday tradition.

This hotel is a mixed bag. On one hand it is a beautifully restored old town hall, making it a unique experience. The rooms (we booked an Executive Suite) were spotless and very spacious, with a well-stocked bathroom and kitchen facilities. On the other hand, some areas they fell way short of their star rating. We were asked to pay an additional 5% “service charge” that I spotted in the small print when asked to sign a check-in agreement. So this hotel expected a £50 “tip” for doing absolutely nothing over what I already paid an substantial amount for… Seriously? Naturally I asked it to be removed, and the check in staff seem somewhat upset that I did so, and that just irritated me. They then insisted on payment even though the room was fully pre-paid, and this took even more time to explain and correct. The whole check-in experience was a long-winded time-consuming farce that left me annoyed. The cleaning of the rooms is quite lax here, on one day we returned at 5:30pm and the room still wasn’t cleaned…. Maybe if I pad the 5% “tip” I’d get that 5-star service they promise, who knows. Also, annoyingly, the aircon/ventilation was turned off in our room and while we could open windows, the outside noise level meant you couldn’t leave them open all night…. I would expect a 5 start hotel to turn on the climate controls for a room they call an “executive suite”. The location is good for access to the Central Line at Bethnal Green Underground (about 5 minute walk), but the area lacks a selection of restaurants, so would recommend you walk the 15 minutes (or taxi in 3 minutes) to Shoreditch for that. Overall, the stay was pleasant, and the room was great, but the annoying points began to irritate after a while, especially the 5% "add on". Not sure I would stay here again.

Thank you for your feedback. With regards to the 5% Service Charge it is very much an optional discretionary charge. We have reiterated this to our Reception Team. We sincerely apologise for the mix up with regards to your payment, this also have been addressed. Our climate control is centrally managed with access to turn down or turn off from the individual rooms. Our aim is to always go above and beyond to make sure all guests have a welcoming and enjoyable stay with us. Though you have stated you may not return to stay with us but I do sincerely hope you would reconsider and reach out to me directly to arrange your stay personally, as we would like the opportunity to show you that you are valued customer to us. Feel free to reach out directly via info@townhallhotel.com

My wife I stayed in the hotel as we had booked to go to da terra for dinner. It never ceases to amaze me how disappointing london hotels are, how they over promise and under deliver when you compare outside of london price for price. All the staff we met - reception & bar(s) were/are great. Very friendly, helpful and charming. However arriving four hours earlier than our dinner reservation we wanted to check out the pool and have a swim. We’d have taken a warmer dip in the ponds outside in Victoria park! The apartment was okay, not sure what I expected but some decent coffee would have been nice. I won’t ramble on about small things, but generally not massively impressed.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Our sincere apologies concerning our swimming pool which is meant to be always heated, however during the time of your stay we had some issues where our heating for the pool went down, once it was reported we took the pool out of use to be fixed. This has now been completely fixed, for no further reoccurrence. Hence once more we apologise for your experience. We are are currently changing our in room offerings which we are soon launching our new coffee selection which we know will be more to our guests discerning taste. We would love to welcome you back to Town Hall Hotel and would be delighted if you can reach out to me directly via info@townhallhotel.com to discuss.

So much space for London! It has excellent facilities and charm. Our 2-bedroom was excellent for traveling with two young kids. There was a washing machine in our room, a huge plus for our long trip. The staff were always so helpful. We loved exploring East London and getting away from the huge crowds in Central London, but still easy to get around via tube or bus even with the overground being out of service for maintenance. Several grocery stores near by and great cocktail bars as well.
