We stay two nights in this outstanding small hotel, with wonderful views over Lake Windermere. It is quietly located and a welcome break from the bustle of the area's towns and villages. We had Grasmere, which is on the first floor at the front of the main house. It has three windows (the three central ones), so is light and has great views. It is not large, but was very attractive and well fitted, with a very comfortable sofa, as well as a small table and chairs. The hotel's Covid 19 precautions were very reassuring. They deliberate let only 10 of the 12 rooms. The menus were all emailed in advance and there is a large plastic screen at reception. All the staff wore face coverings and, as a result of staggered dinner times and no non-residents, there was plenty of space in the lounge and restaurant. As part of the Covid precautions, no one went into our room during our two night stay, which inevitably meant the room was not serviced - would have been better to explain why than let us guess that it was part of their Covid precautions. We felt completely Covid secure. The staff are delightful, very helpful and generally efficient. The one exception was that one even a waitress took our dinner order without a notepad and got one dessert wrong - however, it was quickly replaced. Dogs can only stay in the Kentmere suite and are not allowed in inside public areas. A wonderful place to stay. Very relaxed and enjoyable (no need for jackets in the restaurant unless you want to wear one). A truly outstanding hotel.

Room Tip: Grasmere. Comfortable, quiet, great views and, being inside the main building, no problem when it...

I’d had quite a stressful time travelling around the lakes with Covid around and vast crowds of people seemingly blissfully unaware. It was therefore with a sigh of relief that we drove up the long drive and away from the hordes of Ambleside to a gorgeous old converted house. The hotel manages to perfectly blend the traditional with the modern. Everything was spotless, calm and staff friendly and professional. We were staying in the Windermere suite which is part of a converted cottage away from the main building. The receptionist showed us the way and explained where we could park. We were offered the restaurant or room service. We decided to order room service because we had a lovely view and a choice of eating outside on the terrace or inside. A menu was swiftly emailed to us and we chose dinner and breakfast. All terribly efficient. The suite is now the standard against which I will now judge all other hotels. For me it was perfect. It wasn’t the most grand or opulent but it was calm, tranquil, immaculately clean and spacious. We were in an old cottage and yet also a thoroughly modern and comfortable one. The ground floor has a lovely comfy sofa and TV as well as indoor dining and a patio to our own private garden. Also on the ground floor is an enormous bathroom with deep copper bath and lovely Lalique toiletries (I’m afraid we didn’t do much for water conservation during our stay). Stairs lead up to a lovely super comfy bedroom with sloping ceilings. It was cosy listening to the rain at night. I’m afraid we didn’t leave the room and explore the rest of the hotel but we felt super comfortable and right at home. I can’t wait to go back.

This was our first time at The Samling - but will not be the last. This is a very good small hotel in a lovely location, professionally run and with staff who make you feel that they care. Tea was produced at once when we arrived. The room was very comfortable and well equipped with a view over the lake. Dinner was excellent, the choices on the 3 course dinner menu included lobster, rabbit and Dover Sole, and the cooking was accurate and unfussy, allowing the flavours to stand out. Service was very good. Breakfast was fully up to the standards already demonstrated. This was a good choice for an overnight stop on the way up to Scotland but would equally be a great place to stay to explore the Lakes.

We were meant to stay here for one night after our wedding in March 2020. Unfortunately though it was cancelled due to the coronavirus. As soon as the hotel opened we received our refund. The lady I spoke to on reception was really helpful and engaging. We're hoping to stay in the next few months all being well-I wish them good luck on their opening :)
