A visit to the glorious and peerless Samling close to Ambleside in Cumbria has been a self-promise for a number of years. It is true that sometimes something so anticipated can only deliver a degree of disappointment. Not The Samling. If you are planning to go for the food and matchless attention to detail that has somehow eluded those at Michelin you will leave with unforgettable memories of the mushroom tart with truffles, horseradish ice cream adorning a carpaccio of beef, the lobster ravioli swimming in a bisque so perfect you wonder if it would be rude to ask for five more, something merely called ‘Chicken with Watercress’ which should be coronated and delivered on platters to condemned people and so much more. If you are going for the view, perched as the hotel is in the perfect place above Lake Windermere, you must plan to leave room in the 512mg of memory on your phone for the photos you will take of every impeccable angle of the property. If you are going to treat yourself to a room or suite be prepared to get exactly what you pay for; understated, comfortable and just lovely. And don’t forget there is now ‘The Wilderness’ of three luxury tents erected to offer an alternative to the unspoilt luxury of the hotel, by gifting dwellers the best view of the best view and the newly opened ‘Gathering’ which offers more relaxed options for food and drink. If you are going to be spoilt by the incomparable team of devoted professionals who grace the hotel with that superb blend of discretion and personal service you will meet Rebecca (who is lovely, chatty, knowledgeable, impeccably mischievous but always willing and available), George (personable and professional), Robert (who knows more about wine than God), Tina and her colleagues on reception who are the face of this fantastic refuge, Victoria (the smiley and consistent deputy food manager and sommelier) and all the others, you will feel you have made new friends. But you must never forget Robbie, Emile and the team in the kitchen who deserve the accolades The Samling always earns. The food and service is perfect. We also enjoyed a gastronomic lunch at the one rosette Forest Side, which cannot hold an amuse bouche or sliver of radish to The Samling. You will leave The Samling replete, rested and feeling very special. You will also be planning your return.

Lovely location overlooking Lake Windermere; comfortable, spacious room with huge shower and towels; superb food – a choice of two tasting menus (plus one vegetarian menu) which were happily varied to offer us variety over the four nights we were there; impeccable, friendly service and assistance. Stroll round the lovely gardens or through the woods or sit on the terrace admiring the lake with a well-mixed cocktail while the chiffchaff (Duracell powered, it seemed) serenades you. Overall, taking everything into account, we concluded that this was the best hotel we’ve stayed at over the last 20 years. Go on, you deserve it.

Fabulous hotel, we had nearly given up on a decent hotel in The Lakes. My pet hate on tourist destinations is that so many hotels have a captured audience and get away with poor quality. The Samling is another level, exceptionally clean, professional, well run, and to top it all the restaurant was amazing, food was delicious! Expensive but you get what you pay for!

After looking at the hotel pictures, reviews and food and dining details in January this year, we booked for a five-night stay at The Samling for June. The hotel is lovely, the situation is perfect and the staff are so friendly, but prospective visitors should be aware that the menus that appear on the website are misleading. We booked for three-course a la carte meals - instead there were just two disappointing and overpriced tasting menus each evening. Why would anyone stay for more than one night if the tasting menu does not really change. After my complaints, the manager informed us that The Gathering restaurant and menu are still not available. Very misleading website information for a long time. Also note that almost all reviews about dining at The Samling are from 2020 or earlier. This does not bode well. We had very disappointing food served up every evening when we asked for something different (as we had expected when we booked) from the rather dull tasting menu. And our 39th wedding anniversary evening was ruined by hopelessly overcooked steak (we weren’t even asked how we would like the steak done!), supermarket chips and a few lettuce leaves with no dressing. Hopeless. My advice – if you want dinner, bed and breakfast, ask the hotel what is on the dinner menu before booking your stay. And be prepared to be disappointed. And do not stay more than one night if the hotel still only just offers its very average tasting menus. Very dull.
