The food was so good we ate here twice on a recent holiday in the Lake District. The portions are huge and the menu is full of all sort of dishes you'd hope to see after a day's walking: steak pie, burgers, fish and chips, sausage and mash etc. Everything looked and tasted home made, the prices were very reasonable... Just stayed with mrs R and our pet dog for 2 nights. Would you believe it we were the only residents. All that I can say is that the Red Lion is a great place to stay for the price, the accommodation and most of all for the quality of the meals. The breakfast and the evening meals ( especially... We only stayed here for one night on a last minute visit. I have to say that after reading some of the other reviews I had to laugh. People complaining about wonky floors and low ceilings. Really, what do they expect of a 15th century building!?! We found the Red Lion Inn to be lovely, full of character and all... More

We visited Hawkshead on a beautiful sunny day and were looking for somewhere to stop for some refreshments. Over the inordinate amount of pubs in such a small village of Hawkshead, we chose the Red Lion. Have to say it was reminiscent of sitting in the Med in a taverna sipping cold drinks, but it was Cumbria. There were others... More

Pub looks nice inside and with the promise of home cooked food we ordered some lunch. A weekday at lunchtime in August and with only 5 other people in the pub we were surprised after 40 minutes when no food had come out. We asked the guy behind the bar - "it's coming", he said. At 1 hour 10 our... More

Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious, not fancy or trying to be something it's not but cooked well and super tasty. The gravy rich with flavor. The staff are so friendly and entertaining!! Beers were great and it's a dog friendly place which was perfect

We stayed here as a group of 5 girls for 2 nights as we were attending a wedding on the Saturday. I don't think this hotel had ever had a group of young girls stay before as many locals seemed shocked to see us, especially all dressed up but we received many compliments which was really nice! We were wowed... More

Ate here 2 nights in a row recently while visiting Hawkshead and myself and my wife both thought the food was great, well prepared and good portions. Atmosphere in the bar area was exactly what you'd want for a meal and a few pints after a nice days walking. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and most importantly the pub was... More

Apparently the oldest pub in the Village. We stayed in a clean room with an added set of bunks which we used as a cloak room. A good atmosphere in the pub, local and quiet, good real ales on hand pump. Excellent breakfast and unusually only served between 08.30 and 09.00 which concentrates the mind but absolutely not a problem.... More
