We booked the Rothay garden for a mini break to undertake a number of walks starting from Grasmere. We were lucky to get the break in before the second covid lockdown. We had a Riverside room which was spacious enough with a lovely patio area overlooking the Rothay River. We did have a few niggles with our room, i.e. no WiFi and broken locking mechanism on main door as well as some dead light bulbs. All issues aside from the WiFi were quickly addressed. The staff were excellent and big thanks to manager Harry who is very customer and service focussed. Food was excellent, we will definitely return.
A very enjoyable 2 night stay. Staff very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is in a brilliant position, we stayed in Helm Crag loft suite which was spacious with lovely views. It was also great having exclusive use of the spa in 30 min slots per room. Will definitely be back.
The food at the Rothay Garden was as excellent as previously and there was a great selection of dishes on the menu at dinner, often making it difficult to choose what to have! Breakfast was good too and we would particularly recommend the French Toast with bacon and maple syrup. Unfortunately, the service in the restaurant did not match the standard of the food. We did not receive our pre-starters one evening, no petit fours with the coffee, also we were given the wrong wine and we experienced slow service with tables that came in after us being served before us. Breakfast service was terribly slow and disorganised one morning when the restaurant was quiet and we waited 20 minutes for our order to be taken. We were very surprised to read other guests positive comments regarding Covid measures and that they find it acceptable to sign for drinks using a pen used by the waiter and countless other guests. This was of particular concern when seated at the dining table and having to sign for wine immediately before being served bread to eat with our fingers. We mentioned this to the manager however the practice continued. This is the ninth hotel that we have stayed at since the first lockdown ended and have not had to sign for anything elsewhere. In addition, face coverings worn by staff should cover both the nose and mouth. It was especially disappointing that the staff were not wearing theirs correctly in the restaurant when serving food. We appreciate that it is unpleasant wearing face masks for long periods of time but perhaps visors could be provided for staff instead. Even though we signed for drinks the bill was still incorrect with extra items added but were deleted when queried. This is a lovely hotel with excellent food in a great location, however, this time it our stay was let down by the service and the Covid measures which could both be easily be rectified. We received an email from the hotel asking for feedback following our stay and we raised the above points, however they chose not to respond. …
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. Most hotels check you in and leave you to it. These guys are on the ball. The whole team take the time to get to know you so that they can make you feel like you’re the only guest they have. They’re amazing. Harry, the Michael’s, Tommy, Michelle and everyone else, thanks so much! Then there’s the food. We had planned to have dinner in the hotel a couple of nights and eat out the rest. We changed our minds after the first night. It’s stunning. Beautifully cooked and presented with a great range that changes nightly. Breakfast was just as good. Beware the ‘Fellwalker’ though, it’s the size of a fell and nearly broke me for the day! All in all, in these times of uncertainty and anxiety this hotel goes beyond excellent. Fabulous stay at the Rothay Garden Hotel! Faultless. Lovely welcome, excellent customer service, lovely food and in a gorgeous setting. We were in the Rothay Suite which was perfect. Thanks to all the team, Will certainly return!
