We didn't plan our trip to the Lake District until the last minute & had to grab the first available double we could find. Beggars can't be choosy but they don't have to be over charged. The staff was hard working & very busy, other reviews said they were stiff or unfriendly, not so- busy & taking care of business... More

Pretty location tucked under the Old Man itself. Nice beer garden - don't be put off because it is on the shaded side of the street. Cafe culture for beer lovers. Food is plain but really well cooked, so don't be put off. best dining tables are at the back. Front bar does not seem like an inviting place to... More

Called in for a few pints after a walk around Wetherlam. It's hard to disagree with lots of the comments already written but I have to give the Black Bull a "poor" & that's being generous, simply because of one thing witnessed on by visit . It's a dog friendly pub so does this mean they can lick plates &... More

While the food is very basic pub food it is OK but relatively expensive. The reason I am reviewing is the off hand attitude of the staff. They clearly see visitors as cash cows who they will not see again so why bother with politeness or any semblance of service, do not ask to try a beer before buying!!

Warm welcome and prompt service. We ordered a couple of toasted sandwiches and a portion of chips. We were very happy when they arrived looking wonderful. Not your average toastie but rustic bread bursting with filling. No skimping here. Surroundings clean and comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Great place

Recently visited after a drive around the Lake District. Obviously popular with locals which is a good sign. Food was served piping hot and was enjoyable. Attractive Seventeen century inn with original features

Ate in here with a large group of friends the other night whilst staying in Coniston. It is a big place with numerous bars and rooms. We had to eat in the dining room as everywhere else was full but no problem. i chose a fairly expensive option - the half duck - but it was very good and a... More

Full of beams and low ceilings, this pub oozes atmosphere. Had a fabulous meal here with family and all four meals were fabulous. This tempted us to go back the following evening and although the duck salad was great the burger I ordered was as tough as old boots. I left most of it but was tired and could be... More

For years we've stayed elsewhere just outside the village, but usually travelled in on at least one evening for a meal, drink and natter with friends, so thought why not try a room here as well and can enjoy a pint or two for once. glad we did thoroughly enjoyed the 2 nights, evening meal and the hearty breakfast before... We visited condition lake for a boat ride. After a little wander around the shops in condition we stopped off for a spot of lunch in here. Amazing food we had whitebait and lamb steaks. One of the best cooked meals i have tasted in a pub. We wished we could have sampled some of their own brew but unfortunately... More
