Have visited twice in the last few months and not sure how to describe it other than it's an odd little place! Beautiful setting and we knew it as being highly reputable before visiting. The first visit we had Sunday lunch, which was delicious, great to have a meal where you could actually taste the produce, but main was luke warm at best and the potatoes certainly well coloured and crispy! Second visit afternoon tea and on arrival were hustled into the dining room and staff member left quickly. Felt like we were an inconvenience having arrived! The afternoon tea had clearly been prepped in advance. Sandwich bread dried out as if been sat in fridge for a while (also suspiciously like a commercial loaf). Scones really lovely, but no butter supplied. Patisserie items delicious. We were provided with a tea/coffee menu at the start, but on ordering a coffee from said menu were told rather abruptly that they didn't have that anymore as they no longer use that supplier. Why not make mention of this at the time of handing out the menu?! Or get a new menu! Other than being served, no-one ever came to ask how things were, if we would like a top up etc. I don't find there's any atmosphere to the dining room at all, and both times we visited during what I would say are peak serving times. Pretty miserable sitting in near silence from the rest of the room! Was looking forward to it being Christmassy and cosy inside, but aside from some outside decor and a tree not much of anything. Staff are pleasant but inattentive and for such a star rated establishment would expect better service. For the cost, it's a very underwhelming experience in my opinion. All in all, disappointed and a bit of a let down after greatly looking forward to each visit.

We stayed for a long weekend in December - the hotel itself is lovely, the rooms are spotless, cosy and beautifully decorated with lots of thoughtful items you would expect from this standard of hotel (fresh milk, mini cocktails, homemade biscuits, luxury toiletries etc). The staff on reception were also very attentive, friendly and welcoming. However, the service at the restaurant was very disappointing and has put us both off from returning again. We had afternoon tea, the a la carte dinner menu and breakfast each morning of our stay. During afternoon tea we were told abruptly there was no decaffeinated black tea only herbal tea (a minor complaint but odd for this standard of hotel especially considering it was available in our room). We were not checked on once during the meal and not offered any more drinks. The service at breakfast was not great, the first morning we were waiting 30 minutes for a drink order to be taken, the second morning it took 40 minutes for a bowl of yoghurt and granola to arrive (after a reminder from us). Basic requests were messed up - not sure if this was the kitchen or the waiting staff but just gave an impression of disorganisation and a lack of training. This also happened with other guests breakfast orders. The most confusing thing was that staff would be walking around the room constantly but didn’t seem to notice that people had been waiting for a long time, or might want to order more drinks etc. The dinner was nice but again, compared to similar places we have eaten, there was no explanation of the food, service was slow, and after asking for a change to one menu item for a dietary requirement there was no acknowledgement when it was brought to the table which would have been concerning if I had a serious allergy. We were surprised by all of this as it had been recommended by friends, but a quick google search shows a new chef and restaurant manager have recently taken over - maybe this is just settling in problems.

Have been taking Sunday lunch here three times a year for the past twenty years, and it has always been a treat. Unfortunately, on the basis of our recent visit, it has lost its way. The welcome was non existent, it was forty five minutes before we were presented with menus, it was one and a half hours before starters were served, and two hours before the main course. We requested white bread with the starter which didn’t arrive, and took two further requests before it arrived. My wife’s main course was not as ordered and had to be returned. My main course had cold beef, hard and cold roast potatoes, a wedge of hard carrot, and a very salty gravy/jus. Following clearance of the main course dishes my wife had to go to the bar to request dessert menus as these were not offered. It was doubly disappointing as, not only was the whole meal poor, we are now reluctant to return to a venue we have enjoyed immensely for many years.

Lovely warm welcome, wonderful food (roast potatoes nearly as good as my wife’s, and that is high praise). Jus, better than my own. Beautifully decorated dining hall. if you’ve a dog there’s even an incredible dog shower. Many thanks The Fenton family

Came for afternoon tea on a cold, wet November afternoon. The whole experience was wonderful. A very warm welcome, comfortable and cosy surroundings and the food was outstanding. Very attentive and friendly staff. I honestly cannot fault any of it from the sandwiches, scones and patisserie. It was perfect.

What a beautiful place to stay! We booked a last minute night away and we were blown away when we arrived. We had a complimentary upgrade to a room in the new pavilion and it was so beautiful. The room was huge and extremely stylish. There were homemade biscuits on our arrival, a Dyson fan, a huge smart TV and a very comfortable bed. The room was also spotlessly clean. There was a freestanding bath, double sink and a rainfall shower with beautiful Bath House products. The lunch and dinner were sublime and the service was impeccable. The only small thing that needs recognising is that the standard of breakfast was not the same quality as the other food we had here. It didn’t feel as refined as we expected, given how delicious the lunch and dinner was. Definitely recommend staying here.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay with our Cavapoo dog “ Poppie”. The service from all the staff team was excellent and the food was amazing ( Michelin star quality ) , the new head chef will clearly maintain the very high standards set by the previous head chef . The hotel is genuinely dog friendly . I would highly recommend the room with an outside hot tub ….. We will be returning next year .

Went for Sunday lunch to celebrate husbands birthday we live in the Lake District so have been to a lot and only go out for special meals usually Mitchelin starred . Booked online and stated for special birthday but no friendly personal service and no mention of birthday..Decor to start was very drab and.dull and stained sofa nibbles with drink’s tapenade with crackers a few shards not enough for 3 . partridge starter bon Bon tiny and dry and breast overcooked ,.the venison tartare was good but tiny portion ,we all had roast lamb which was good but again not up to scratch not hot enough roast potatoes tasted good if you could get your teeth through them and Yorkshire pudding again dryed out and not seasoned gravy okay but can make tastier myself husband commented the highlight on plate was the roasted onion !!!Ordered chocolate dessert to be told ran out off asked if there was an alternative but came back and told could take without the aeroated chocolate so took that received a bowl tasted okay but coffee icecream all melted into chocolate cream couldn’t differentiate husband got cheesecake which was delicious . Bill £203 pounds for 3 definitely do not recommend no extras on the side like Mitchelin restaurants and the poorest sofar. HUGE Disappointment!!!!! first review I have ever made eating out on in Lake District Please don’t waste your money .
