We stayed in 2019 for 4 nights and have been so excited to come back ever since. Dinner on Thursday night was just the experience we remembered so fondly from 2019. Its a wonderfully complete experience, ensuring you’re as comfortable as possible at all times. You’re seated to enjoy drinks and browse the menu before being shown through to the dining room. The decor and atmosphere is perfect, comfortable yet refined. The food as before was spectacular, honestly a very special dining experience. The food is refined, well thought through and so perfectly balanced. You can see and understand why each dish has been constructed in the way it has, and what each ingredient brings to the dish. Everything has been meticulously thought through. You can see the Head Chef Dan takes great pride in his menus, ensuring balance is achieved throughout the courses. The stand out dish to us was the intermediary course, a set savoury custard, with roasted (I think) cauliflower, pickled (I think) shallot rings with truffle topped with a Parmesan foam, it was utterly perfect in every way, so perfectly balanced. From our last stay Rothay Manor was awarded a 3rd Rosette and you can see why, the level had gone up even further. The cheese trolley is also a Rothay manor must, it’s an experience all in itself. The staff seem to really enjoy presenting the cheese trolly to the customers and explaining each and every cheese. The selection of cheeses was superb, a plethora of excellent British cheeses. We had Renata as our waitress that evening and she was superb the whole night. She was great with explaining the cheese to us, you can see she enjoyed it and was more than happy to answer any questions. Her knowledge of the cheeses was extensive. All of your staff are a credit to your company, Craig, Renata and Martina especially, they are brilliant at what they do and our experience and interactions with them will last long in our memory. We stayed the night and ate again on the Friday as well as having afternoon tea. The afternoon tea was by far the best we’ve had. The service from Renata again was great as well as of course the food. The room was so plush and comfortable we didn’t want to leave, it was luxurious beyond belief. The bathroom and shower was a triumph, one of the best showers I’ve ever had. Lovely toiletries as well. The decor is relaxing and pleasing on the eye. The bed was the best part of the room, what a wonderfully comfortable mattress leaving you feeling refreshed. We would actually like to know the make of the mattress in the Aira room so we can look to purchase one. You don’t be disappointed with your stay. We cannot wait to come back again. Again, an extra special thank you to Craige, Renata and Martina. Craige and Martina also remembered us from 2019 which really pleasantly surprised us.

We stayed in the new pavillion and the suite was fabulous with a stunning view. It was really spacious. comfortable and wonderfully designed and even more lovely than the pictures on the website. Lots of thoughtful extras to make our stay even more luxurious. The bathroom was huge and lounging in the bath with a cocktail after a big hike was perfect. Breakfasts were excellent and dinner in the resturant outstanding.

How lovely to return to Rothay Manor now that they have completed their building work. We have to say that the new facilities look absolutely fantastic, and the new parking area is so much roomier. You can certainly see all of the investments that the hotel has made over recent years. We stayed again in Hardknott, which continues to be a delightfully comfortable, and quiet room, with great facilities and amenities, and we would certainly stay again. The only thing that let the stay down was the breakfast. We had breakfast all three mornings we were there and had issues every day with either having to send items back that had gone off or incorrect items that were brought out to us. On the final morning, we were actually told off by one of the waiters for asking for a 'dairy-free spread'. Apparently, we should have asked for Flora and he would have known what we wanted. One doesn't expect to get chided over breakfast when paying over £200 a night. Other than the minor breakfast hiccups, which didn't affect the enjoyment of our stay, Rothay Manor continues to be a first-class hotel and certainly one of the most outstanding in Ambleside,

We enjoyed three nights at Rothay with our dog who was spoilt to a bath robe in his boot room after long walks, very generous breakfast, his own bed, bowl, towel and endless treats. The staff couldn’t of been nicer also. Breakfast was a great way to get ready for the many hikes, wild swims or boat trips within walking distance. Spacious parking on site was a bonus as you have to pay everywhere in town which you can easily walk to from the hotel. Dinner was a real highlight. We had a dog friendly dinning room to the side of the main one for those without dogs which was a great touch not many other “dog friendly” hotels accommodate where you’ve to eat in the bar only. Having seen their Chef compete on Great British menu we knew this would be great and it didn’t disappoint! Ensure you get the cheese course the trolly is stocked full of British cheeses. We’re rebooking for next year with our parents for their 70th and our sister and her young daughter. We had a great time!

Lovely setting at a beautiful location but the actual accommodation was over priced. We expected to be staying in an old Manor when in fact the building was completed in May this year, with still some bits to finish. The room had no air-conditioning hence the temperature did not drop below 23c. They supplied a fan, but was next to useless. For good sleep the room should be no more than 18c. We have had rooms in far less expensive hotels with better facilities; so much for their posh amenities - we could not find a hair dryer and we had to take our own bar soap. The staff were great and the breakfast good. We could not recommend this hotel at the prices asked. The picture misled us.

This was just a one night stay in Ambleside. The hotel is well located with both the town centre and the lakeside within an easy 10min or less walk. The hotel has spacious grounds and is peaceful despite the busy local area. We were made welcome as soon as we arrived, given a quick tour and then to the room. Spacious, comfortable, decorated to a high standard and peaceful. The service was friendly and efficient and the food very good. The dining room has great views onto the ground, is light and airy with a comfortable atmosphere. The hotel has the old original building and a new free standing annex. According to the staff younger visitors tend to prefer the new annex wheras the older prefer the original building. Certainly if we were staying in the area again we would chose Rothay.

The drive to Rothay Manor, in Lake District, and the area surrounding the property, is breathtakingly beautiful. There are beautiful walking trails around the hotel. Our room was spacious and well furnished. We had dinner and breakfast at the restaurant, and both meals were excellent. The breakfast especially . The restaurant felt luxurious, the service was fine, and the food was of high quality. The check-in and other staff were very helpful and friendly. We only stayed a night, but had a lovely time and would love to come back again.

Room - very impressed with the room that we had, it was spacious and nicely decorated with some nice additions such as Sky TV and a fixed electric toothbrush charger in the bathroom. We brought our dog too and there was a good quality bed for him and some extras. Reception - very helpful and friendly Food & drink - exceptional food at dinner and really enjoyed the wine pairings. Breakfast was nicely done too, granola, fruit etc being served at your table, however with the cooked breakfast, the eggs were tasteless in my opinion and the black pudding was quite overdone . The cappuccino also looked like it had come from a vending machine or a sachet which was a shame. Service - everyone was really friendly and were welcoming on arrival. Dinner started off well with us being told what was in each dish and the wine that was pairing it, however two hours into the meal the service became very slow. The staff never really acknowledged it which was frustrating as the time went on. We were served a small glass of red wine and our lamb just before 9:45 and an hour later we still hadn’t been served our next course or been offered another drink. We were offered some cheese after about half hour which I presume was due to the delays, however my partner doesn’t like cheese so she didn’t eat anything for an hour and both us went without any wine for most of this time too. Because we had our dog in our room and had had a long day, we unfortunately left the restaurant without having our final courses which was disappointing. One of the waiters did knock on our room to ask if we wanted to have our last courses in our room which was good of them, but it was gone 11 by this point so we declined. Another small point, earlier in the day I went to the bar and ordered two cocktails. We were the only guests there so it was empty and it took 15/20 minutes for them to come out. The hotel removed the service charge and reduced the cost of our wine pairing without me asking by way of apology which I am satisfied with. My suggestion for the restaurant staff would be to acknowledge the delay, give an estimate of how long it’s going to be and offer another glass of a previous wine to keep us ticking over. All in all we would definitely return as we believe this was a once off as they were a chef down from what we were told when we said we had to leave.

We stayed at Rothay Manor for our anniversary weekend and mostly had a positive experience. The bar and restaurant staff were, without exception, very attentive, efficient, friendly and courteous. Our room, Colwith, was lovely. Very comfortable, striking decor and with a balcony overlooking the garden. The bathroom had a wet room style shower and a lovely freestanding bath as well as double sinks. There was also an anniversary card and complimentary chocolates - a thoughtful gesture. We had the taster menu on our first night, which we enjoyed very much. The wine flight not so much but that's probably just personal preference and it was still an enjoyable experience. We chose from the a la carte menu the second night and actually enjoyed this more than the taster menu. We would have liked the option of the bistro menu on our second night but this wasn't available in the dining room where our table was reserved and there were no available tables in the Brathay restaurant where this menu would have been available. It seems a shame that both menus can't be offered in both dining rooms. Mostly the attention to detail was as I would expect in a hotel and restaurant of this calibre and price point. However there were a couple of areas where attention to detail was missing. On arrival the bath in our room wasn't quite clean, a quick rinse out sorted it but I wouldn't expect to have to do this. Also, one of the seat cushions for the patio chairs had been left out on the balcony by the previous guests and was soaking wet. The welcome letter for the previous guests was also still in the room. We were woken both mornings of our stay by the noise of a downstairs door banging closed each time it was used - it just needs a soft close hinge adding to it. Overall, a lovely stay and with one or two improvements it would have been perfect! The staff - an absolute credit!

Visited whilst on holiday as a couple with our little pup. We sat outside and everything was fabulous. The server was wonderful and I love how they show you the tea selection first! Afternoon tea was fabulous and not the normal teeny size you normally get!! Worth every penny
