We better break this review down in to two sections, the good then the bad. First, the good, we thought the bricks and mortar of the Doubletree by Hilton Hull along with the rooms are TOP rank. The hotel looks new as do all the rooms. The lobby was clean and bright although it is a bit of a trek from the private car park (which even the walk considered, is another welcome feature). The location is central if not directly in the centre of the city. That said The Deep, the attraction we had come to visit was still only a 15 to 20 minute walk through the pedestrianised centre. While we are sure other hotels could be argued to have a better location, we feel the quality of the Doubletree makes it a great pick when visiting Hull. We walked through the lobby wearing our masks as per the very clear Hilton signs saying that masks were “required by all guests”. Our receptionist was Rio who was the only staff member we saw while in the lobby and was very pleasant in manner. While not wearing a mask herself she was behind her protective screen and she efficiently issued our room along with warm cookies … thank you as always Doubletree. The only negative was on mentioning it was my wife’s birthday we got a half hearted “happy birthday”. The room we had (room 111) was clean, had everything you need and had a seal on the door to show it was cleaned and ready for new guests. The bathroom was large and had plenty of towels. The bed was large and was SO comfortable, so much so we are looking to buy a comparable one for our home. The view wasn’t a lot to write home about but this in no way detracted from a great hotel room and one that was everything we have come to expect from the Hilton brand. Sadly for all our positivity there were some significant negatives while at the hotel. First, when we have visited other Hilton properties on my wife’s birthday they have made a specific effort to “make a fuss”. In Prague we never mentioned about it but on cleaning the room and seeing her cards on the table they gave us a bottle of wine and strawberries, the exact level of service we are happy to pay that bit more for and why we use Hilton properties wherever possible. Sadly in the Doubletree by Hilton Hull while we didn’t expect anything, as we never do, we got no nice surprise and no extra bit of service from the staff. What we were most disappointed in was the attitude to keeping guests safe from COVID. We were surprised that no effort was made by the hotel to enforce its own / Hilton’s mask wearing policy. While checking in people entered the hotel and moved around with no challenge. Later, while speaking to Rio to sort out the Hilton Honors WiFi which was not working for me not only did a large group of 20+ enter the hotel without any face coverings but staff and guests moved around without masks and without challenge. Whatever your opinion on the government and their guidelines specific circumstance make mask wearing a legal requirement. The hotel itself had clear signage to wear masks on their property but no action was taken to challenge anyone. This left us both concerned and feeling quite stupid as we were the only ones bothering. We went out to the centre of Hull to grab some food and on return to the hotel they had a security guard in the lobby who was also not wearing a mask and like the other members of staff without, had no lanyard showing an exemption. His manner left a lot to be desired as he was not welcoming and stared quite hard at myself and my wife … maybe he was surprised we were wearing masks. While we had a great night’s sleep the whole lack of COVID protocol was troubling to us so we made the decision to mention our concerns on check out while also feeding back the positive parts of the stay. The receptionist at check out (we are so sorry we didn’t get her name but she was wearing a “Trainee” badge) was really sympathetic and really came across as showing care and thought to our complaint. At the time of checking out some work was being undertaken in the lobby in relation to an event they were holding. We brought it to the receptionists attention that not only were guest not wearing masks, a large number of staff and the contractors / work men undertaking the display work were also not wearing any face coverings. We made it clear that the receptionist was not personally to blame and we were only passing our issues to her for these to be fed back. She asked if we would like to speak to the duty manager which was accepted and waited for her to come to us. The duty manager, we later were able to confirm as someone called “Jo” came out to see us. We stated the same concerns of the lack of face coverings and of no one being challenged over this. The duty manager told us we were wrong and that they did ask everyone (totally incorrect as we never witnessed anyone challenging a guest) and that in any event they did not have to enforce mask wearing. We made the point that mask wearing was a legal requirement and that Hilton themselves had the policy for, as their signs in the lobby stated “all guest to wear face covering”. We were told this was not the case, they had no legal requirement to do anything. We brought our concerns of the previous evening when we were checking in and she said she was there. We challenged this stating that only Rio was present in the lobby. The Duty Manager then retracted saying she was in the back, obviously she has the ability to see though a solid wall and see what is happening in the reception area. When we challenged about the Hilton signs she became even more argumentative and looked at her watch as if to show that she was tired of talking to us. We found this very insulting and asked her if she had somewhere to be to which she then made an excuse of her watch hurting her wrist. With absolutely no empathy to how we were feeling and getting no form of apology or acknowledgement that she was not taking COVID protocols seriously we left for our day at The Deep. We returned to the hotel later to collect the car from the car park as we had to enter to obtain a ticket to exit the gates. The hotel lobby was even more crammed with staff, guests and contractors setting up the event. Magically, ALL staff were wearing masks an action we think was knee jerk in reaction to our criticism. In summary the hotel is really good, the rooms clean and very well appointed, the location is good and the facilities such as gym and private secure parking also really good. Certainly we also need to add the trainee member of staff we saw on check out was very good. The lack of acknowledgement to my wife’s birthday was a negative but as we have stated we didn’t ask for or expect anything, it was just other Hilton properties have shown initiative and a great level of customer service being attentive to such events and going above and beyond. Sadly the hotel stay was let down most for us by it not enforcing any of its own advertised COVID precautions and by the lack of care and interest from the Duty Manager who simply did not seem equipped to be in that kind of position given her attitude and lack of understanding for customer service. While this stay does not dampen our enthusiasm for Hilton and staying in their hotels again, we would totally steer clear of the Doubletree by Hilton Hull only due to, in our opinion, the poor leadership of its duty manager "Jo".

Hotel's Favorite
Just back from 8 days away at the doubletree in hull. What a fantastic team, they made us so welcome. The warm cookies were a hit with the boys very tasty. Rooms are very spacious and clean. I liked the sealed rooms before entry. Very covid friendly. We felt very safe. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful, staff very attentive. Lots of choice. We ate one night at the Marco Pierre restaurant the steak was a bit disappointing however the rest of the meal was delicious. The bar food was delicious with good choice and generous portions. All staff were exceptional from reception to restaurant, bar and housekeeping nothing was too much trouble . They always asked and checked that things were ok . Whilst eating in the bar we noticed a man on his own a staff member came over sat down and chatted to him such a lovely gesture above and beyond. The hotel was family friendly with excellent attention to detail. When next in hull we will definitely be booking here . Would be an added addition if they had a spa and or swimming pool. Fabulous time had, Definitely we will be back 😊

Stayed over Christmas. on Arrival could not exit the car park through the pedestrian gate as the exit button was not working. Fortunately someone cam to gain access. could not access wifi on my devices. The room was good and the breakfast was good. I was surpriswd to find that reception was not manned all the time especially for security reasons if not for questions from guests. When we trie to acess the car park through the pedestrian gate it was not working. had to go back to the hotel which incidently is not a short walk. some one came to open the gate and said that someone must have entered the wrong number too mant times . suggesting that it was me. Why is there no direct access to the hotel instead of having to walk along a Street.
