Been here many many times. It's a great little place, great food and booze. Can be busy at times but if cozy and wonderful. If you can get a spot by the fire on a cold day and hanker down for a bit you won't be disappointed.

Claims to be England's oldest inn. A truly unique place - a framed print on the wall shows the floor plan and when each part was added (rather like that of a cathedral). Much more space inside than appears from the outside, with a very attractive main area and a fairly substantial ancillary room. There is also some outside seating.... More

I had to entertain a German visitor who likes traditional English pubs with beams etc. This pub definitely ticks that box. He also likes a variety of bitters and that was excellent too. The food was good, not super special, but certainly tasty and the three of us had a good evening. This was definitely helped by efficient and friendly... More

Perfect charming old English pub. Nice beer selection from local ale to Franziskaner Weissbier and superb atmosphere and nice staff. Can accommodate medium sized groups but is better suited for small parties.

Lovely old building. Staff friendly and efficient. Sunday menu consists of a choice of roasts, which I always think is a bit lazy but I went for the lamb. Huge plate full arrived with all the trimmings and it was just fine. Not great but certainly not bad. Worth a visit for the building alone. Whether or not it is... More

As the title may indicate, the food was very average and it probably would be better if I'd had a copious amount of drink on me but I don't drink. There was a lot of smoking around me as it was an outside table which probably didn't help the taste. Is there anywhere that you can have food outside there... More

After a recent visit to Ye Old Trip To Jerusalem I thought it was a great opportunity when in St Albans to visit another of the countries reported oldest pubs. It certainly looked the part and was in a lovely setting close to the lake and by the Cathedral. We sat outside for a drink on a nice sunny day... More

It was a hot day and for some mad reason we decided to get a roast dinner. It was the first time my friends had come to st Albans so I decided to take them here. They have a massive beer garden and we were easily able to get a seat even though it did progressively get busier during our... More

My husband and I hadn't been to Ye Old Fighting Cocks for years, despite being frequent visitors to St Albans. My memory was of an atmospheric old Inn with bags of charm, and I expected much of the same on this visit, but we slightly disappointed. We called in on a sunny Saturday lunchtime and found a table inside. There... More

Living close to the "Fighters"' we sometimes drop by on the way home from town for a drink. So today we stopped off but our experience was not to be recommended. In an attempt to kill a large wasp, "Chris" managed to swat the insect in our direction along with the rolled up menu, resulting in depositing the entire contents... More
