Stayed one night - a really pleasant experience, and excellent value. Nice room, good shower, with air-conditioning (unusual in England!). Friendly staff, nice grounds with a lovely terrace outside the bar - pity that it was really cold after the sun went down, so we had a drink inside. The highlight was dinner in the dining room. The food was... More

Lovely hotel. really helpful staff, beautiful grounds, excellent rooms. But if there is a wedding on during your stay beware as the whole hotel is taken over by the wedding guests and there is nowhere for residents to find some peace and quiet. Ask before you book.

The Manor House is a very comfortable place to stay. Right from our arrival, where we were greeted at the door, the staff were very friendly offering great service. Our double room was very comfortable, although the next time we stay there (and we will) I will ask for a room overlooking the beautiful gardens. Our evening meal was wonderful,... More

We were looking forward to an enjoyable experience in the beautiful surroundings of this hotel but were sadly disappointed. Firstly we were served in the sterile atmosphere of the large dining room which lacked any comfortable ambience. Before being served we requested that the sandwiches be only with brown bread but were told "they are already pre-prepared" so no choice... More

Stayed overnight on our way home and enjoyed both the food and the lovely surroundings. The staff were very pleasant and our rooms were delightful with a view of the lovely gardens. A lovely hotel and worth a visit.

For a hotel of this reputation disappointing; the senior staff [I suppose they were as they wore jackets] seem to have a degree in avoiding us - even though we had booked and at the same time ordered the champagne tea. Eventually a junior [shirt-sleeves only] took our order again and while the tea was generally good a repeat request... More

Checked in for 3 nights and was ushered to the room only to find out we didn't get the requested balcony. The staff changed our rooms quickly and transferred us to the ground floor rooms facing the lake. Although they emailed us advising that hotel is booked for a Saturday wedding but they overlooked to tell us that it is... More

I visited for afternoon tea for a friend's birthday a week ago. The service was pretty poor from the outset, having to wait to be seated when we had booked long in advance, not given any menus originally and when we were there was only 3 or 4 between 12 people. When our order was taken they then forgot to... More

I use St Michael's Manor occasionally for business meetings, I haven't yet eaten there, but I love the decor and friendly, efficient service. I've brought friends here who were visiting from the states, they really enjoyed the setting and proper English "hot" tea. I discovered in when looking for a local business which had air conditioning during the few heat... More

We stayed 1 night in the chestnut room which was lovely and clean, it is situated on the 2nd floor (please note there is no lift ) but we was offered help with our luggage. The bathroom was clean but the toilet was fitted with a wrong size seat and the window was dirty with a torn piece of net... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This magnificent town-house hotel, set in five acres of beautiful English country gardens with lake, is remarkably close to the city centre. The Newling Ward family converted the 500 year-old building in 1965 and continue to own and run the hotel. The 30 bedrooms are individually styled, with many overlooking the lake and gardens, and the award-winning orangery style restaurant shares the same views. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, bar snacks, cream teas and dinner served in a choice of dining areas. ... more   less
