This pub along with several others in the area have been taken over and transformed into pubs with food and very good food at that. The Alfred also has en suite rooms too, although I have stayed.

Stayed for one night when down for work, the staff were pleasant and the beer was good. Large, clean room with comfortable bed and powerful shower. Tea pot and proper milk in the room which is always good. Only a short walk into the town...More
We stayed at the King Alfred this weekend, there were 8 of us. All of us were made to feel welcome, such a lovely homely and friendly place.

I was very impressed to see a vegetarian roast dinner included as many restaurants offer you an alternative meal...full roast dinner with yorkshire puddings, gravy, veg with a vegetable pie....and of course...good craft beer!
