Holmsley is a campsite steeped in history. Occupying part of what used to be Holmsley Airfield in the Second World War, it is one of 12 wartime airfields and Advanced Landing Grounds in the New Forest. Indeed, the aircraft hard standings and taxiways are now the campsite roads and parking spots! The campsite is close to the rural villages of Burley and Bransgore, with shops including a bakery, chemist, and chip shop. The site is predominantly grass, meaning there is a lot of space for the children to play. It also offers direct access to forest walks and safe cycling tracks; ideal for exploring the local flora and fauna with the whole family. Onsite there is a fully equipped shop that sells a wide range of groceries, camping essentials and games to ensure that your holiday runs as smoothly as possible. There is also an excellent take away; perfect after a busy day exploring the forest and when you want to put your feet up in your tent and relax. Opening time will vary throughout the season. This campsite offers both hardstanding and grass pitches with the opportunity for electric hook-up. There are also toilets and wash facilities available on site.

Bitterly disappointed with our recent weekend stay. The whole site is too open planned so no areas to park up if wanting privacy. Many of the campers had so much equipment and furniture that they were taking up too much space Loud music afternoon and evening, fires and barbecues despite warnings and the dry grass, adult men and children using the tress to urinate save going to the toilets. Children screaming and cycling everywhere without looking for oncoming vehicles. If you want a site for large parties book here, if you want to sit and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the new forest go somewhere else.

I have never come across such rude power hungry staff. We arrived on Saturday 30th July an hour early, as there was an amber warning on the M25. My husband decided to leave early to avoid traffic jams. We were not allowed in as it wasn't 12, it was hot and we had small children so we got out of the car to get some air. The next day a sign was put outside informing people who come early not to get out of their car (controlling). We pitched up with very specific instructions what angle to have our tents. The first night our party was drinking as we were celebrating a birthday. The staff came over about 11 to ask them to lower the noise level, unfortunately they did not so the staff returned and was challenged by a younger member of our group as to why there were other groups talking but we had been singled out. In the morning the same staff returned and said we all had to leave. My daughter who was celebrating her birthday said 'sorry' and she would leave with her friend as it wasn't fair on me and the rest of us. All this time the staff did not give eye contact to anyone but me. The older lady said she would be happy if the one on the end went on her own (the one who challenged her). Was told they had to be off by 12 and we informed her they couldn't as they needed to be picked up. She returned at six and looked at one of my other daughters and said 'why are you still here?' so rude. Our group was loud that evening and they were swearing in conversation a lot which was not nice but there are ways of dealing with things and it was not done properly. They should have been given a warning about being kicked off the site of which they was not. It was all about 'power' of which they were going to exert in a rude arrogant manner. They also cleaned the toilet and shower block nearest to us at 9am every morning. Most people want a shower at this time of the day but no you cannot, even though they spend most of the day standing at the entrance doing nothing but exerting their little bit of power they cannot do it at a sensible time. You have to be off site at 11 am and they do not let anyone on before 12 so why not clean between 11 and 12.

We return annually because the staff are so welcoming and the site is perfect for us. If you want a stress free holiday then come to Holmsley campsite. We return every year because of the amazing people that run and supervise the site. Always clean and tidy.Excellent experience, highly recommended.

I have read with intrigue a couple of reviews about the Sausage rolls at Holmsley site so while we were here (lovely stay by the way) we thought we would do a consumer test, we purchased bake at home Sausage rolls by birds eye and Aldi own brand we also purchased 2 of Holmsleys Sausage rolls from a man called Paul I think. After cooking and consuming the 3 types of sausage roll the 2 of us came to the following conclusions birds eyes pastry was a bit flacky for our liking (too many crumbs on our tops) and the birds eye sausage was not as tasty as the aldi one, whose pastry was also less flacky , on par with let's call them Paul's sausage rolls the aldi sausage was indeed very tasty, where as Paul's was that little bit spicier so in conclusion the Aldi ones and Paul's sausage we rate as joint 1st with the birds eye ones coming a close 2nd, if we were pushed to separate Aldi ones from Paul's ones, Paul's ones would win Purley on size

We have just returned after a six night stay camping in a tent. We have been coming to Holmsley for more than 35 years, with our children and now our grand children. The site is as nice as it ever was. It is set well within the New Forest and as such is a very special place. It is not commercialised or touristy in any way. It is just predominantly grass camping set within trees. It does have a small play area and a shop, although we did not use it on this occasion. It is a large site and there is plenty of space for everyone. We left on Saturday when the site was full to capacity, but we didn't feel cramped at all, there was plenty of space all around our tent for the children to play, and we had no problem using the showers, toilets and washing up facilities with no waiting. There are three good sized toilet blocks which were kept very clean throughout our stay by the dedicated and very hard working friendly staff. We spoke to the various staff members every day and went to their reception area daily to change ice packs. We do not recognise some of the recent reviews for this site with their negativity at all and hope that future campers can enjoy a relaxing and peaceful experience as we have. We extend our thanks to all the staff that we had the pleasure of meeting and thank them all very much for making our latest visit such an enjoyable experience.

We’ve stayed here in our motorhome several times before, and were nervous this time after reading some negative reviews on trip advisor. We really enjoyed our weekend visit . Warm and well informed greeting from the staff, were able to select our own pitch at leisure( not on hook up) and the site was busy but didn’t feel crowded. Showers etc were clean and all three blocks were open, closing in turn for cleaning. Shop was well stocked. Lots of kids around enjoying the big open spaces in safety on their bikes, and the walking around the site was as glorious as ever. Don’t heed the negative reviews. We had a lovely stay.

Honestly one of the worst experiences we've encountered. Very interesting reading the reviews as it seems we wernt the only guests treated extremely badly by the staff. They think they're running a prison not a campsite in the New Forest! We arrived to the campsite at approximately 7.30pm to be greated by roughly 5 staff members at the entrance. A man approached the camper and without a hello said there may be a problem. Without informing us he went into the office and a women shortly came out stating that because we had no ventilation window that we wouldn't be able to stay. My other half asked what we were supposed to be ventilating - as we had no gas or cooking facilties in the van! She couldn't provide an answer but stood very aggressively explaining that it was company policy and that someone had died due to no ventilation. I sympathise but come on... we have 2 front windows for goodness sake! Absolutly ridiculous. This was also not explained to us at the time of booking, she rwturned back to the office and left us waiting for 15 mins finally to return the van explaining she would allow us to stay as we wernt informed. All the while she was in the office the first staff member is stood infront of the van with his arms folded as if we were just going to drive on through!! 🤦‍♀️ She came out with a leaflet full of rules then started reading them out to us.. no this no that... honestly it was ridiculous. By this point patience was wearing slightly thin so we asked for the leaflet so we could get on but she continued to read the rules and wouldn't let us settle in. There was absolutely no level of customer service we felt very uncomfortable. We drove around the site just to check it out and decided to nip out to get some supplies before settling down. All the while driving around we could see one staff member looking down with his arms folded as we approached the exit to leave he flagged us down and with an extremely aggressive manner told us we were doing over the 5 mile an hour speed limit! He then continued to behave extremely confrontational by which point my other half got fed up. Then to top it off he reached his hand into the cab to grab the reservation ticket and told us we had to leave!! I honestly have never experienced anything like this... the attitude of the not one but all the staff is rude, unwelcoming and extremely aggressive. We haven't got our money back so I will be making a formal complaint to head office. Avoid this place, we have stayed at multiple camps within the area and have never had such a horrendous experience! £30 for a pitch with no electric hook up, the facilities looked very basic and the shop e tc was all closed by 7pm. Very basic as my other half put.. a glorified lay-by. AVOID!!!

We arrived here for a 3 day stay with family, 3 couples, 2 tents and one caravan. The drive up is beautiful, horses everywhere. Typical New Forest. We arrived at 11.15 and waited at the entrance as you can’t book in until 12.00. No problem there, we weee allowed to walk on site to use toilets and but a drink in the on site shop. A herd of horses usually gather by the entrance so that kept us occupied while waiting. A friendly warden popped out to talk to us about the horses which was nice. There are lots of comments about the wardens being rude and having no customer service skills. I thought everyone was actually very friendly but I can see what can trigger getting annoyed by them. We were eventually let in and a another friendly warden Philip took us to our section. Now this is where it started to become slightly annoying. We had booked electrical hook up. As did the other 2 couples. We had to enter a very long winded discussion about where and which angle we should pitch our tent. I appreciate it’s a busy site but what an over long discussion about angles, where to park, don’t use windbreaks as people complain, who? Who complains about windbreaks!? At this point another warden who escorted the other couple joined in the chat which quite frankly meant we had two very lovely but quite chaotic wardens telling us where our tent entrance should be lined up. It was also quite funny how we had many comments that they found it all quite stressful that out of our 3 couple group 2 have turned up at once causing them to spin out of control as it was so busy dealing with 2 couple in the same group at once! Most of the wardens are of a slightly older age so I feel they know better, they have zero patience and get quite stressed if things don’t run smooth. The pitch was perfect, lovely flat dry ground. Set up was easy. When the 3rd couple turned up it was the same conversation, angles, positions, no windbreaks! It’s a huge site, 600 pitches, big mix of tents, camper vans, caravans, this is my first site where I thought we were all just too enclosed in and too close. I appreciate that’s the style of the site and I get why you have to park and set up their way to maximise space. The shop on site was good, everything you could want or need. But weirdly it opens at 8 I think but closes at 12.00 then reopens at 4 until 6. Why close at 12 when people arriving? Surely it makes sense to stay open for when people arrive? When we arrived at the site you could tell it was busy but still not full, empty pitches around, shop very quiet. By Saturday the place was absolutely heaving. The shop constantly busy, it really felt then we were all packed in like sardines. The shower/toilet block were clean, constantly stocked up but when the camp became busy all I can say is people are absolutely disgusting, feral pigs who felt it fine to leave toilets in a state. So pleasant walking into a cubicle to find HUGE skid marks in ALL of the cubicles. And yes all cubicles had toilet brushes. The team do really well trying to keep it all clean but they were onto a losing battle. The site is close to Christchurch, Avon beach, a really good location. Would I return? Probably not. I like my camping less busy and less lecturing on set up. Also there was a horrible incident of a camper van blowing up, not anywhere near us but it must have been frightening for near by campers. The actual organisation from the staff wasn’t great from what gather. I was out getting a Chinese takeaway which I highly recommend!! Flyer is in the shop, I can’t remember the name but it was delicious! And they deliver! But it’s cash only, even if you go and pick up!

This was our first and LAST time camping at Holmesly campsite.. First and foremost there was a large fire on site as sadly a motorhome caught alight - the site was completely packed and, apart from a member of the public ringing the alarm in the small area next to the fire, there was no notification to people elsewhere that something drastic was happening (apart from the huge smoke and loud gas explosions of course, but ideally there would be something a little more formal), and no evacuation plan being carried out. One member of staff in high vis on a bike was very unenthusiastically telling small pockets of people to gather at the evacuation point (“over there”), but with absolutely no structure, and in particular this was not being communicated to the members of the public that were in the immediate vicinity of the fire, and it left us feeling quite alarmed that there were so many onlookers who hadn’t been asked to move/evacuate the area. I should also point out that on arrival there was no mention of fire safety and, because we had friends who had already arrived, we were not given any of the welcome information (including the evacuation routes). It all felt very disorganised, it was pretty much a free for all, thankfully the fire was contained to one area and nobody was hurt, but there was huge potential for it to go terribly. As this fire took place in the area we were initially staying in, a woman recommended us go and stay in a separate area and after a while we found an area where we set up. Had a nice evening despite the distressing events, and after a few drinks, after nightfall, the wardens proceeded to tell me and my partner that we couldn’t sleep in our converted campervan due to it not having a side window (although we have front windows that open, and a roof air vent which was specifically put in for ventilation reasons), and that we either needed to sleep in our friends 2 man tent or leave (which we couldn’t do as we had been drinking). We questioned them initially, but they were very adamant and rude, in particular the lady with short brown hair was quite rude and she was using her torch to look into our van/friends tent and amongst all of our belongings. Her male counterpart at this point was reeling off lots of arbitray/random criteria about what makes a safe campervan.. apparently (from what I could decipher) this was for us, a side window that has a curtain. We also spoke to a couple nearby us who were evicted from the site at half 10 as they didn’t have a “kitchen” in their converted land rover defender.. (never mind the fact that a huge fire had earlier started due to a gas leak in a fridge, yet our small campervan was the issue!?). Anyway we couldn’t be bothered to argue with them, but they assured us they would be round at 2 o clock to check (we really felt like we were being told off). After much deliberation we decided to stay in our lovely ventilated van, instead of cramming 4 people into a small 2 man tent, and no surprises to the fact we didn’t suffocate. These people need to seriously think about sorting out an actual fire safety plan and evacuation routes because at points, the handling of the above situation was like a comedy sketch (it felt like they had no idea what they were doing in all honesty), and it’s okay because nobody was hurt and the fire was contained, but the outcome could have been so SO different. If the poor handling of a very dangerous fire situation wasn’t enough, them deciding to tell us at 10:30 ish that we can’t sleep in our van, and to not offer any tenable solutions for us, was the nail in the coffin. As others previously mentioned by others, this campervan rule really isn’t clearly stated on the website before booking and so we genuinely had no idea. Anyway, wish we’d read the trip advisor reviews. DO NOT STAY HERE

I have stopped at many campsites before in tents and in a camper-vans, over many years and I have never been spoken to or treated in the way I was here…condescending, rude, power hungry obnoxious staff who have clearly never had any training on how to speak as decent human beings. On arrival there was no polite welcome just immediate questioning on where we were going to sleep that night. We were in a converted Campervan, with electrics, beds, fans, cooking facilities, tinted windows and so on…. I was told this is not suitable if my side rear windows did not open… however I two front side windows open… I was questioned further on if I have a changing tent, or awning which I said I do not, never needed before. There was no apology and we we just told “you cannot sleep in that we can’t let you in” I was astonished as 2 grown women we were being told what we could sleep in. The extremely rude staff kept referring to their t&c’s (received after booking) which had this information. I suggested this should be disclosed prior to booking when you use the simple form of stating your staying in a campervan, they ignored my suggesting as if I was taking to a brick wall…My friend advised the link to this has never worked… to which they defensively replied “well it works for us”. Cool, helpful! Since there was no remorse or customer service I tried my best to come up with a solution and say if the windows are not enough the big metal giant back door (which opens vertically) or the big metal side door could be left open… as you can guess this was not enough as and I quote “THE WIND COULD BLOW IT SHUT, AND WE COULD SUFFOCATE AND DIE” Quick call met office there is a hurricane coming which these idiotic staff know about during the middle of a heatwave… If only I have naked my DVLA certificate which declare my vehicle as a campervan…. Anyway they did not believe we had friends to which we said we can sleep on the floor of their 6 and 2 man tents if needed, even though we had not spare air bed but that’s fine it is what it is. A wall was up and they kept questioning our honesty and did not believe our friend had enough room and they insisted they saw the tent… They eventually let us through and luckily we did not allow this to ruin a lovely evening with friends. I understand policy, but when it is met with no clear guidance and no common sense i just can’t believe these people run a business. If the staff had not been rude and confrontational from the start I maybe would have understood more. There was not one apology from various staff and they believed a £9 refund solves all. Warning for all campers, the location is stunning and the facilities are average but if you don’t want to be spoken to an decent human and not feel judged do not stay here. I do feel as if me and my friend were targeted and spoke to the way we were because they did not like the image of a VW campervan on their site and if I was a fancy motor home there would not have been an issue. We were the only people around us which were visited by the warden that night to ‘check up’ we were quiet, respectful and this felt targeted. Finally due to having a foot injury currently it was not practice to sleep on a hard floor. Me and my friend has a wonderful ventilated, cooling sleep in the van and it was actually cooler than the tent… Funny that.
