After seeing quite a few disappointing reviews cropping up, we were a little nervous about our trip to Ellenborough and were deterred all together from trying the restaurant opting for a great place in Cheltenham. The big positives are the look of the hotel itself and the grounds which really are beautiful. The receptionists were all extremely helpful and the staff were polite and friendly at all times. The room in the newer section was comfortable but fairly basic for the high price. There was little in the way of an introduction to the hotel, facilities or a welcome drink for example, just things you’d come to expect at almost all 5* hotels. We got the impression that they may be short staffed and we saw other guests also experiencing confusion, booking issues and service issues possibly linked to this. The hotel has a reasonable amount to offer, however without a proper introduction to the facilities or any clear welcome pack in the room you wouldn’t necessarily know that. Breakfast was basic but pleasant, however the table was never cleared by the staff even when they brought over the hot plates so we were forced to try and stack things to make space and eat around lots of used items, that’s not 5* service and it wasn’t busy. The afternoon tea again was nice, nothing amazing but enjoyable and the young female waitress was lovely. The coffee before the spa day took nearly half an hour to arrive and only after we reminded them. We had to then hurriedly drink it as to not miss the ur treatments which wasn’t a relaxing start. We used the pool which was a good temperature and also spent time at the spa facility. On our first day we booked 55 minute massages. Both massages and the therapists were very nice, however my therapist wasn’t aware which one I had booked (pregnancy massage) and so the room set up hadn’t been accounted for. After looking for a suitable room and the therapist finding the right bits and pieces, 10 minutes of treatment time had been lost. Despite being told that this wouldn’t impact on the treatment time, the treatment was not extended to account for this and I was even finished sooner than my husband who had no set up issues. When paying £100 for a massage, to have it cut short for issues linked to their preparation isn’t acceptable. I possibly should have said something when I realised, however realistically short of putting me back on the table for 10 minutes after I’d got changed, I’m not sure what it would have achieved! The therapist the next day had set the room up prior to the treatment which was much better, she even got me to switch sides half way for a more even massage which I didn’t get the day before and used the pregnancy pillow differently which was better. Overall a comfortable stay with lots of potential at a beautiful venue, however we have to echo other reviewers who have also pointed out similar trends. At this very high price point, a more proactive and attentive service will be expected from guests. More caring/tailored Tripadvisor responses would also look better rather than the copy/paste response everyone gets which says they’ll take feedback on board, particularly when the same issues/themes continue to crop up.

I stayed two nights at the Ellenborough Park Hotel with my hiking group. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. This elegant country manor dates back to 1485. The spa is lovely. I had the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi to myself since COVID safety protocols required that I book a slot to use these facilities which were no charge since I was a hotel guest.

We came for a long weekend to celebrate a special birthday and had a throughly enjoyable and relaxing experience. The hotel building and grounds are beautiful and there are amazing views of the countryside around (and some lovely walks of varying lengths that can be taken from the hotel). We found the service, food and facilities excellent and the staff were without exception polite, friendly and efficient. We swam in the outdoor pool (lovely and warm!) and visited the spa which we were able to book for our exclusive use for half an hour. We also enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, very well presented. The only tiny niggle would be that we couldn’t get very good tv reception but as we were spending so little time in the room this was of little consequence. I hope to return to Ellenborough Park again one day!

Falls noticeably short of average country house hotels. Room: Stayed in dog-friendly room (No.64) - toilet flushing system kept stopping so we couldn't flush the toilet = had a clogged/no toilet both nights. Resolved when reported in the morning on the first day but stopped working again once we were back in the room in the evening. Restaurants: No space at the restaurants for staying hotel guests is unacceptable. We're paying £600+ per night to stay at the premises and not get turned away or offered a place at the local pub. Other 5* hotels hold tentative bookings for their guests and ask if you want to use the table on the day or the day before! We arrived at c.8pm and were told we can't have any dinner - small plates/alternatives were also not available (only drinks and olives, nuts and crisps) because there were no tables available at the restaurant. The restaurant menu or at least a shortened alternative should be made available to guests in the dining room & bar in front of the reception or the great hall - they're adjacent rooms to the restaurant! There's no room service menu or guest handbook in the room. Spa: Very unpleasant experience 1. We only got 30 mins time to use the small facilities area immediately after our massages (impossible to have 30 mins given time for dressing up after massage etc) and were kicked out promptly by the next guests who had booked the area for their 30 min slot. Other similar hotels have a more flexible policy - guests are there to relax, not follow tight schedules. The other slots we were offered were after our check-out time on our last day (we're travelling with a dog, so not a viable option as it has nowhere to stay). 2. Guests are not able to turn on the jacuzzi jets themselves - you have to walk out and request from the spa reception that the jests are turned on! 3. Spa facilities area is very small - small 2-person jacuzzi + small saunas mean only 4-6 guests max can be there at a time - this size is fit for a private house but not a hotel. 4. The massage rooms are cold, tea is not offered after massage Reception/staff: Staff are very polite and clearly doing their best but the hotel is mismanaged/understaffed. Check-in and check-out are rushed, no explanation of hotel facilities and grounds at check-in (how many restaurants does the hotel have, discovered walking routes maps were available only at checkout etc). Reception and restaurant staff were always ready to help with additional requests - extra water int he room, post/letter item sent same day. Billing: Charged full room rate + deposit on check-in and charged full amount plus expenses again at checkout - other hotels charge deposit only at checkin - double charging makes a difference if using a debit card. 2 stars because the premises/park are gorgeous & staff are polite & helpful, but there are better country house hotels out there unfortunately, especially at that price point.

The hotel looks beautiful from the outside, but once you get inside you see areas that could be better. The gardens are beautifully kept, but again, the promise of the hotel is let down by poor service. It’s quite clear that some simple processes are not in place, large numbers of lost orders at breakfast. This morning, ours took nearly an hour and a half, two wrong deliveries of drinks and one wrong delivery of food, both destined for the couple in the next table. The poor couple across from us waited over an hour for a pot of tea!!!! Eventually ours arrived, and wasn’t worth the wait, kippers greasy and poorly cooked. The night before, a simple order of a glass of wine and a bottle of beer was supposedly brought to us when I enquired where it was 30 minutes later, I retrieved the order from the bar instead. It’s quite clear this is an ongoing problem as when raised with reception this morning hardly an eyebrow was raised. I fell sorry for the staff who are clearly doing heir beat, they are young and enthusiastic but lack leadership and ultimately as everyone claims their gratuities back, they are the ones that lose out. The other area that could be improved on is the signage, we arrived late at night, reception is not signposted, you had to walk in a door, down a corridor and then turn right! Again, we were not told where breakfast was and had to find it ourselves, mistakenly heading to the bar before being told that wasn’t where we had breakfast. It’s such a shame as this could be a lovely hotel which could almost be worth the exorbitant prices they charge, if it was just led properly.
