The Old Ship Hotel, according to many guests, has a unique charm and an excellent seafront location, close to Brighton's pier, shops, restaurants, and other attractions. However, opinions on cleanliness and value vary widely, with some praising the comfort and affordability, while others criticize outdated facilities and high prices for rooms and services. Noise disturbances were a common complaint, due to factors such as street noise and nearby venues. Despite the need for refurbishment in some areas, many travelers still appreciated the hotel's historic atmosphere and friendly staff.

I've read the mixed Reviews for this place and most of the issues I believe are through lack of info or understanding of Brighton,or location... Location fantastic but if you want 'quiet or classy' Brighton,be prepared to pay £50 a night more or get a Hotel nearer Hove.....

The female singer in the bar on Friday night was great, but when she finished it was disappointing that no music was played over the speakers, the atmosphere died... We booked the old ship hotel for a chilled overnight stay my husbands birthday treat... We appreciate the hotel is old but it was not clean... Our room was so small we could barely move around the bed, the bathroom was tiny with mould patches around the shower... The room had 2 obsolete sockets so we had to choose between plugging in the fan, lamp, tv or phone charger, as you couldn’t do all at the same time!...

The first room we booked was smelly and damply so we had to upgrade and the hotel charged us extra £40! The upgraded room curtain was teared and so old.The armchair had black stain and not clean so we used a towel to seat on... The windows didn't have draft and it was breezing inside the room... We had been given only one key for both of us to the room... The lift was very old and unsafe to use and we used the stairs to our room on the second floor which it's carpet was loos and my partner tripe over (trip hazard on many steps)... There is no room service at night whereas they said they have 24/7 room service... There was not enough towels for two people in the room and it took two hours to bring us more towel to our room... Overall I am not happy with this particular booking and I would like to ask for a refund...

...Everything was spot on, rooms, food, comfort. Our room was at the front with the best sea view you could ask for, can’t fault it... Stan in the Wardroom restaurant was very attentive, polite and helpful... ...I appreciate that part of the hotel dates back hundreds of years, as many others do around the country, however the cost of the rooms and services are very up to date prices which is disappointing, in contrast of how dated the hotel currently is. We had to be moved, due to an issue with the room we originally was given, so at 6pm we were lugging all our luggage to another room 3 floors up... When I asked if there was a room with a sea view, the receptionist said ‘yes we have plenty but that would be an extra £60!’ Being so late in the day, and clearly theses rooms were vacant, it really would have gone a long way if you’d have upgraded us as a gesture of good will, due to us having to vacant one room and go to another due to no fault of ours...

There also really isn’t any need to charge so much for breakfast, £15-17 each!... Thankfully we had the sense not to take up your offer and we found a beautiful place to eat on the sea front, for £8... In fact you’re spoilt for choice for breakfast along the beach, so surprises me that you feel the need to be so expensive... Maybe until this happens you want to lower the price, and services to reflect the current state of the hotel... There are other beautiful already updated hotels along the sea front for the same price you are charging which isn’t right... I can see from your response to other negative feedback, that you do recognition the issues that have been raised, however you don’t seem to appreciate that we are paying for a service that we may not be 100% happy with, and like my experience, a small upgrade at the time would have gone a long way...

When we checked in we paid and ordered breakfast for the morning we were charged 17.95 and have since seen it should be 15.00 if pre booked at reception... ...When we sat down we were asked who had allergies (which we emailed in advance, along with a phone call to say that we had some fussy people who may rather some plain sandwiches, the lady on the phone made a note and said it wouldn't be a problem.) The waitress bought out our afternoon tea trays, and I asked if we could have some plain sandwiches (which I'd previously requested) and she said 'no', she wasn't told that... The customer service could have been better... The waitress gave the impression she did not want to be there... Which was a shame as other venues for our hen party weekend had gone above and beyond expectations so it was a dampener to end with such sour service... When we had run out of tea we had to request multiple more pots as it wasn't naturally offered, the venue was hardly busy as the waitress was sat round the corner preparing cutlery and napkins for another sitting...

There is no room service at night whereas they said they have 24/7 room service... There was not enough towels for two people in the room and it took two hours to bring us more towel to our room... ...Everything was spot on, rooms, food, comfort... Stan in the Wardroom restaurant was very attentive, polite and helpful... However, special mention and gratitude must go to Connor, could not have been more helpful, went above and beyond to help in every request, from moving older family members to another room closer to a lift, and even checking room temperatures before doing so... ...When I asked if there was a room with a sea view, the receptionist said ‘yes we have plenty but that would be an extra £60!’ Being so late in the day, and clearly theses rooms were vacant, it really would have gone a long way if you’d have upgraded us as a gesture of good will, due to us having to vacant one room and go to another due to no fault of ours... Maybe until this happens you want to lower the price, and services to reflect the current state of the hotel... I can see from your response to other negative feedback, that you do recognition the issues that have been raised, however you don’t seem to appreciate that we are paying for a service that we may not be 100% happy with, and like my experience, a small upgrade at the time would have gone a long way...

We ran it for 10 minutes plus but gave up in the end.Breakfast on our check out morning was nothing like the day before ,which was really good.It seemed everything was put under the hot plate from the day before and hash browns etc were cold in the middle,so we had some toast instead 😞 It has been a fantastic hotel in years gone by but it needs a total revamp...

We had a groupon offer which included a bottle of prosecco which we got from the bar and sat in the bar with, which is better than having it in the room... We managed to get a space in the car park and the chaps working there were so friendly and helpful... It's expensive (£27 for 24 hours) but you'd pay the same anywhere in Brighton (I researched it fully) and we went over the 24 hours at no extra cost which is a bonus... Breakfast was also good, loads of choice and again a nice room and friendly staff...

...We came to the old ship for one night the deal we got was 3 course meal bottle of wine and full breakfast in the morning with late check out. We stayed one night somewhere else and it was terrible, we popped in to the old ship on our way back from a Bar and asked about early check the next day... When we was informed that we could drop our bag off if we didn’t want to pay for early check in, we explained that we was staying somewhere not very nice... We came in the morning to drop our bag the Guy on the desk at reception was the same guy from the night before very polite and helpful took our bag and informed us that if we was staying local, possibly pop back and the room may be ready early and it was to then be given a complementary room upgrade with a sea view and nice bathroom with a bath and shower... The room was clean and had some lovely touches, e.g bath robes the bed was Comfortable too... The hotel was quite and a pleasant to stay, drinks at the bar was reasonably priced our meal was delicious and the portion sizes were plenty big enough... Check out was easy and we will definitely look to return one day...

The staff were all very friendly and professional and it was good to see some from our previous stays at the hotel... Our room was a standard Sea View room and we were expecting similar quality to our previous stays in Sea View standard rooms however we were sorely disappointed - dead flies in the sink and bath, a toilet that was a nightmare to flush then took ages for the cistern to refill, peeling / cracked paint on the bath area and insufficient bathroom lighting...

...We arrived and were lucky to get a spot in the garage where we were greeted professionally. The hotel entry lobby is beautiful and we checked in, where everything was professional and we were looked after well... We had an evening meal with the murder mystery event, the food was excellent and we were very well looked after again by the servers and bar stuff at the event... Breakfast was nice too, again, well attended to by the busy staff... The bar staff in the main bar need to learn 'who's next' or 'who's been waiting longest'...

...I must say at the outset that the staff were all very efficient and helpful and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable... The lifts as it says on the plaque were installed in 1920 and are slow... The bathroom was really in need of some TLC but really need a complete replacement... The over the bath shower is so old and must have been installed well into the last century... The breakfast was ok and I went for an English breakfast which was good but they did keep running out individual items... This resulted in quite a few of the guests queuing and waiting for different items to be replenished which wasn't good... My wife normally goes for the continental option but she asked if there were any pastries but was told that hotel hadn't received a delivery so there were none available?... This saved us sitting around for over an hour which you don't have to... We appreciate the hotel is old and has charm but paying just under £200 for one night the facilities you get for this are not up to standard?... Would I stay here again no not for us especially with the bedrooms and bathrooms as they are...

We have stayed at this hotel quite a few times over the years... We arrived in the afternoon just to leave our cases for a while but our room was ready for us even though we were well early... We had an evening meal as part of the deal in the Wardroom... We had breakfast also included for the next two mornings... We were greeted by Gill and she showed me all the breakfast area so I knew what was what... We both had an English breakfast although all sorts was on offer - croissants, cereal, fruit juices... Tea or coffee was brought to our table... Fluffy big towels, tea and coffee... There were also other extras included on our package so we chose the i360 tower... We could have chosen the hop on, hop off bus to go round Brighton... It goes to the Marina so could have hopped off to go shopping... But I love the seashell handles and carpet... We’re thinking of doing the break where you can bring your own dog...

The minute you walk in to this hotel you receive a warm welcome. We have been coming for years and I honestly would hate to stay anywhere else. Our room was the best that we have had yet , large and spacious with a fantastic sea view. We could sit up in bed watching the waves crashing below. All of the staff are exceptional and make our stay such a delight. The position of the hotel is fantastic just a minute away from the lanes and all the wonderful shops and restaurants and very handy for shows at the Brighton Centre. The hotel is obviously very old and does need some work in areas but we just find it really charming and look forward to coming back for my birthday in March.

I paid for a deluxe room and to be honest It was like staying in a run down bedsit. Nothing like the picture and definitely not worth the just over £200 I paid. The paint work was all falling off and was on the floor, the room smelt musky, there was only 1 chair for the sea view window not 2. The bathroom had mould and the bath was grubby. The floor were really squeaky and when you walk to the bathroom it made the wardrobe rock. The bed was not a king size which is meant to be in the deluxe room, there is no room service other than breakfast if you lucky to have the night porter take you order slip., under the deluxe it states room service, it's doesn't say only breakfast. The kettle was hidden in the back of the cupboard and there was no sign on a iron or ironing board. The morning room service was none existing. I put my room service slip on the door for the breakfast and the. Night porter didn't even take it so was sitting around in the morning waiting for breakfast that was never gonna come. This was meant to be my birthday weekend and feel completely robbed, I feel like I was given the wrong room and that what I was given was a standard not a deluxe that I had paid for . When I complained to the reception they said it was the correct room I had paid for. The pictures say it all this is room 121

The service my daughter and her friend received at this gorgeous hotel was exceptional. They had had an awful experience at the Ibis and were left on the street with no accommodation. Yvonne on the reception at The Old Ship was amazing and went above and beyond for my daughter and friend. She was kind, empathetic, knowledgeable and incredibly helpful. The room was beautiful, amazing sea view and clean and luxurious decor. I emailed the hotel to get the lady’s name who helped us and received a prompt reply which was equally as professional and caring. What a breath of fresh air! Can’t recommend this hotel enough. Thank you

Staff were lovely and I have to say that’s why I gave 2 instead of one. Couldn’t fault them. However, as soon as we were walking through the hallways and then into our room, the first thing I noticed was the smell. It was so musty I felt like I was at my nanas house, I couldn’t stand it. Then as I looked around the room, I couldn’t believe it was what I’d payed for. The bathroom ceiling was cracked and dirty. The wallpaper was peeling off in places. Damp on bedroom ceiling by the window. Dust everywhere.. it felt lived in and unclean. I paid £169 for this room shockingly. I booked through secret escapes and complained to them, the hotel replied through them saying they can’t provide a refund because they offered me an alternative room to which I declined and found a different hotel to stay in that night. I find this ridiculous as why would any other room smell any different AND/OR be in a better, renovated condition? For what I paid it was an unacceptable experience. Secret escapes were great though they gave me partial credit for the inconvenience.

I’m sad to say, it is the worst hotel I have stayed in for as long as I can remember. It was originally a lovely old hotel in a prime seafront location. The lift has a notice that says it was built in 1920 so be patient. That’s great historically, but worrying in its function, the smell takes your breath away. The first room we refused as we couldn’t see out of the windows and the smell of damp was overpowering. The second room was an improvement, but only by a fraction. The bed, bath, sink and toilet were acceptably clean (just), but old and worn. The bathroom floor was missing grout in the tiles and the remaining grout was black (I don’t think intentionally). The walls were stained with mould. The shower head didn’t function properly due to limescale. The windows were filthy and the outlook was disgusting with pigeons and faeces on the windowsills. The sash cords were broken. Shabby is a bit of an understatement. I know that management’s excuse in reviews is that they are waiting for funding. In the meantime, please don’t advertise this as a 4 star hotel and charge the same as other hotels that offer so much more.

Dear Tracy, We appreciate your taking the time to leave a review. I am truly sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We try keeping our traditional building in good maintenance order as much as we are able. Still, the high traffic in our 154 rooms does often mean waiting our turn for updating certain areas. We regret that your experience did not meet your expectations and have shared your feedback with our team. Please allow me to express my apologies and rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problems raised with our housekeeping and maintenance teams. Plans have been approved by Brighton City Council & various historical trusts for The Old Ship Hotel to undergo a major renovation (full details & dates to be confirmed). We care deeply about our guests and want to provide the most comfortable experience possible. We hope you give us another chance soon, so we can share a more positive experience. All I hope is that this will not deter you from visiting us again. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Comfy bed, lovely views, great location and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Well decorated but the building itself looks a bit sad, although we loved the 1920 lift!! Fantastic breakfast. Only improvement would be self service tea and coffe

As you walk in it looks great but when going to your room in the corridors there empty wine bottles ,glasses, rubbish and some medical inhaler lying around got to the room nothing like the pictures impossible to see the sea as windows only open 6 inches we could not sleep the bed was like a rock then there was considerable amount of banging of the doors stamping of feet above shouting and then at just after 8 am housekeeping making as much noise as she can ridiculous amount of noise would never recommend this hotel to anyone and as for 4 stars no way 2 at the most. As for people leaving good reviews this can only be staff members

We are Brighton’s most historic hotel and, as I am sure you will appreciate, that comes with its challenges. We are proud of our history, which is displayed throughout the building, although we are not blind to the fact that a building like ours needs continual investment to be able to maintain current market expectations. Although we have not enjoyed this investment in our recent past, we are expecting it to be forthcoming soon and, along with our superb location, I am sure that, on completion, we shall be able to project a very different experience to those who are looking for it. In the meantime, I would be happy to talk through any further comments you have and assure you that we take the experiences of all our guests very seriously and do look at any ways to improve where we can. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager

We stayed for one night while attending a show at the Brighton Centre. Staff were super friendly from the minute we arrived to the minute we checked out. Our sea view room was clean, warm & nicely furnished, Bed was was super comfy. We ate in the Bar lunchtime & the Wardroom in the eve, - Food was perfect in both & staff were friendly & efficient. Great breakfast in the morning… Brilliant location….What more can you ask for? We reckon a lot of folk judge this hotel as if they are taking part in 4 in a bed!! It’s a 400 yr old building & yes it’s a bit tired with some areas in need of TLC, but our stay was an absolute bargain & we would def stay again.

Had Sunday lunch at this massively overrated (4 star, apparently), tired hotel. Paid £25 for a 1-course serving of a chicken roast dinner that I would have sent back if I’d been served it in a prison. Absolutely awful. A flagrant fleecing of the customer. The owners should be ashamed.

So many awful reviews could have really put me off. I'm so glad they didn't. This hotel is old and has character. If you are looking for somewhere more clinical like a travelodge, don't come here. I loved the feel of the place, cozy despite how big it is. My room originally was on the top floor which made me uncomfortable so they moved me with no issue saying they wanted me ro be comfortable. Everyone on the front desk was polite and cheerful. The room itself smelled a little like cigarette smoke which I did mention to them and ask for an air freshener. Now I wonder if it was just the mustiness of an old building. It definitely needs a little money spent on it as the decor is tired and there were cracks in the bathroom tiles for example. But excellent value and a very comfortable couple of nights. I should say it is noisy outside but this is Brighton, it's going to be! Ear plugs were provided which was thoughtful. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Expect noise, the hotel is on the seafront. Ask for a room on the side which is a little quieter....

Thank you for your review of our hotel. It is such a pleasure to receive this kind of positive feedback and I will be happily sharing your review with the whole team, whom I am sure will be as happy to hear it as I was. We live in every changing times so to find that good traditional hospitality is still appreciated and welcomed in a modern world is an absolute joy to learn.
