Cannot fault our stay. Nice size modern room. Clean. Good breakfast. Staff very helpful. I was dubious about staying in an old hotel in a seaside venue. I was wrong. We loved our stay. The ground floor was 'old fashioned' with lots of small lounge areas with comfortable armchairs. It was brilliant. We will definitely stay again. Thanks to all the staff for a pleasant stay.

The location is perfect, right on the sea front. We arrived and were lucky to get a spot in the garage where we were greeted professionally. The hotel entry lobby is beautiful and we checked in, where everything was professional and we were looked after well. We had an evening meal with the murder mystery event, the food was excellent and we were very well looked after again by the servers and bar stuff at the event. The female singer in the bar on Friday night was great, but when she finished it was disappointing that no music was played over the speakers, the atmosphere died. Breakfast was nice too, again, well attended to by the busy staff. What didn't we like - well, we get this is an old building but we couldn't walk one step in our room without the floorboards letting out an almighty groan which rippled out across the whole room, it was unreal and there was nothing we could do about it. We felt so sorry for the people below us. As I said, it's an old hotel but something like that can be remedied. The room was tired, it just needed some TLC and even a picture on the 4 bare walls would be nice. The lift situation didn't bother us, we used the stairs, but it could be problematic for elderly or those with large young families - but that's not something the hotel can sort quickly. The bar staff in the main bar need to learn 'who's next' or 'who's been waiting longest'. Mainly, just some TLC in the rooms would make a huge difference (or may be was that just our room?), We probably would stay again but we'd shop around first to see if anything else nearby might offer a better option.

The Old Ship Hotel - brighton. Requested vegan afternoon tea when I booked online. I called them to double check they had received info about vegan request and allergy info. When I arrived they confirmed vegan afternoon tea and dairy allergy.… I was then served ‘normal’ dairy afternoon tea. It wasn’t until we had finished the sandwiches that they realised. They didn’t even apologise. I was then served the vegan afternoon tea which came with egg sandwiches 🙈😞 Ridiculous!

I stayed solo at The Old Ship on a Sat and Sun night. Beautiful views from my corner seaside room. The club music both nights was TERRIBLE though. Definitely a party area - don’t stay if you’re looking for a serene vacation. I didn’t realize what a party scene Brighton had become.

Dear Elizabeth, First and foremost thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us at The Old Ship Hotel. I understand you had a poor experience at our hotel during your stay due to the noise issue. We at The Old Ship Hotel pride ourselves on our customer service and being able to provide a premium customer experience. We are sincerely sorry to hear that this negative experience disrupted your stay. While the noise you were hearing was caused by something beyond our control, it is our duty to provide you with a comfortable and quiet stay. We are committed to finding ways to create a better experience for our guests. We will be taking direct action to increase the soundproofing of our rooms with the up and coming renovation of the hotel and are confident we can make our rooms more comfortable for our future guests. We are very lucky to be situated on Brighton’s seafront. As unparalleled as it is though, we are in a city which offers as much nightlife as day life and so silence at night can never be guaranteed. Whilst we can certainly do our best to control internal noise, what happens off the premises is a little more difficult for any hotel along the Kings Road to control. Still I am sorry it had such an impact on your stay. All I hope is that this will not deter you from visiting us again, as we would be delighted to welcome you back in the future. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Unusually I stayed twice in a month. The first visit being my daughters wedding and the second to attend a concert at the Brighton Centre. Both very nice stays. The hotel staff are friendly and accommodating the rooms are well equipped and very clear although a bit tired and would benefit from a bit of a makeover but this is a very old hotel. The beds were very comfy . There is a lot of noise from the outside which did go on till the early hours but this is Brighton and a sea front hotel so I wasn’t worried by this. You pay a price which is well worth it because of the location. The singers in the bar were very good and the breakfast was amazing I’d recommend this hotel. Normally I stay with family in the area but if I ever need to stay in Brighton I would have no hesitation in studying here again

Dear Happyhammer190784, Thank you for bringing to our attention details of your stay at The Old Ship Hotel Brighton. We are always happy to hear from a returning guest to our hotel. We believe that hospitality is personal and it all starts with a dedicated and caring team. Your feedback makes us proud … and motivates us at the same time! we take pride in our level of service and it is important to us that our guests leave feeling like they had a great experience. Thank you. Brighton is continually evolving and sometimes can experience high levels of noise and as the hotel is centrally located within the city we unfortunately sometimes get higher levels of noise due to being on the sea front. Still I am sorry it had an impact on your stay. As you will have seen, The Old Ship is a traditional hotel with parts that herald back hundreds of years (400+). Plans have been approved by Brighton City Council & various historical trusts for The Old Ship Hotel to undergo a major renovation (full details & dates to be confirmed). We would be delighted to welcome you back in the future to hopefully note the improvements we are making. Providing memorable guest experiences is something our staff takes great pride in so we really value your feedback. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Our room was quite spacious and good value for what we paid, in spite of the whole building feeling quite old. We had a good experience with most of the staff, except for a woman present at the restaurant area for breakfast on the 31st of August (I think her name started with "V"). She insisted we didn't had breakfast included in our stay (with extremely rude manners), and while I patiently requested she would check with reception she gave us a very mean, exasperated look. She finally checked, and when it was confirmed she was wrong she didn't even apologise. She then asked me what I wanted to drink, and I ordered a coffee and a juice. Her answer "go and get the juice yourself, I already told you where it is". We were baffled at how rude and unprofessional she acted, making us feel unwelcome for no reason at all.

Dear K3749IKsarac, Thank you first of all for bringing your recent experience with The Old Ship to our attention. I am truly sorry to hear that you experienced an issue when checking-in for breakfast during your stay with us at The Old Ship. I have made a few enquiries and spoken with the restaurant manager with reference to your review and can confirm that the situation was a misunderstanding that we apologise for. Each and every morning a report is run via our booking system, the report is then spilt and given to all the different departments within the hotel detailing guest bookings and requirements for the day - the first print out helps each department prepare for opening first thing in the morning (additional details/ information added after this point, every department checks their computers for the rest of the day). Morning breakfast service is a very busy pace, full details of guests via the morning print-out is an essential tool first thing in the morning that helps guide the restaurant staff with keeping everything smoothly running for our guests. Unfortunately, sometimes (for instance; when a guest adds breakfast at the front desk) our system on the odd rare occasion doesn't register it to the report page ready for printing, this is something our IT department is now working on to fix the blip. My colleague who was checking you in on the morning you arrived for breakfast didn't have your confirmed details on her particular list, frustrated with the list she didn’t realise and unwittingly came across blunt and unfortunately sounded rude. My colleague was mortified about this happening and apologises. We take the utmost pride in the service we provide and will always to do our best to ensure every guest experiences the greatest hospitality we can give, I can fully vouch for my colleague who is highly professional and a very lovely person. I do hope that you will accept our apologies for this misunderstanding of events. I can certainly assure you that at The Old Ship Hotel we do our upmost to get problems resolved to ensure that future guests do not have to experience the same issues. While our IT department is working on the IT blip our Restaurant Manager has since done additional training with my colleague in the restaurant on how to check the package and add-ons within our system so that she can quickly check details herself at the restaurant check-in desk (saving time and any embarrassment to our guests). I sincerely apologise for the problem you encountered and hope you keep in contact with us so we may be able to improve on your next stay with us. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

I stayed for three nights in August and was on a special deal , which was good value. The hotel is a bit shabby in places but some of that only adds to its charm. Some things could be maybe rectified quickly, such as the carpet in the lift which is filthy could easily and cheaply be replaced ? 🤔. My room was nothing inspiring but it was clean and comfortable which is important. My deal included an evening meal in the restaurant which I really enjoyed and there was a lovely young man called Stan who worked hard to resolve a very slight issue I had. Well done, you were amazing 🤩. Breakfast in the morning was simple but I didn’t see anything wrong with it. My only personal disappointment was a lack of dedicated vegetarian items , which I asked about but was told they didn’t do. Every member of staff I had interaction with was pleasant and helpful and it made my stay so much better. Every request I made was met completely to my satisfaction. So take the special deal out of it and if you were paying a very high nightly rate , you may be a bit picky about some of the things , but that doesn’t detract from the generally pleasant atmosphere. I would definitely book again

Dear Meg Thank you for your lovely comments about Stan I can’t tell you how much we value it when one of our guests takes the time to let us know about their stay and I am always delighted to learn about a particular team member who made a great impression. People really are what makes the difference in hospitality, and I know I am lucky to have some real characters at the hotel who take pride in looking after everyone who comes through our doors. I will make sure that Stan is aware of your comments and make sure they are considered for the next team member of the month. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager

Stopped in for a quick drink, as the singer was brilliant - too good not to stop. Great atmosphere, older crowd, just a shame we couldn’t stop for longer. Drinks served in plastic cups, which was understandable as I guess people walk to the beach with drinks (I hope they are as environmentally friendly as poss), but made our drinks taste funny.

Dear NtM70, Thank you for taking the time to write your review of The Old Ship Hotel. As the oldest hotel in the city, the Old Ship has been proudly welcoming guests for hundreds of years (400+). We are very pleased that you enjoyed spending time on the Terrace and had the opportunity to experience one of our amazing singers. Our singers are hear on the Terrace every weekend throughout summer, were everyone is welcome to join us. Drinks from our bar are only served in plastic on bank holiday weekends or special events held in Brighton that occur on different dates in the calendar year. This is due to the huge numbers of people that are our wonderful city attracts during summer, for our guest safety (and we are a pet friendly hotel) we use plastic when we know Brighton's seafront along the Kings Road will be busy. All of our plastic is Eco-Friendly and we recycle as much as possible at The Old Ship. I do hope that you will consider a return visit when you come back to our wonderful city of Brighton. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

When on a lovely trip to Brighton we walked past this lovely hotel and decided to have bar food outside on the mess desk. I wish we hadnt bothered. The service to start was good. But after waiting ages the food came and nearly went over us by the waiter letting the tray slip. I wish it had now. The macarroni cheese was disgusting and clearly nuked in the microwave the bread was stale and the coleslaw clearly off. We where starving and as we had attempted to eat as much as we could when I went to complain rhe gutless bar server came back with this vile dark haired woman and she went into one. My daughter had said that she wouldn't eat as she wasn't hungry and that's all she kept too. Said if it was that bad we wouldn't have ate it. I sadly lost my composure and snapped that we was hungry and the food was rubbish and the customer service diabolical. She just smirked at me. Never going back again. Vile place. Vile staff and filthy dirty toilets

Dear Reviewer (J36360), Following your recent visit to our Bar Mess Deck at the Old Ship Hotel and subsequent review. Firstly, constructive guest feedback is always welcome and taken on board. I can certainly assure you that at The Old Ship Hotel we do our upmost to get problems resolved. Regarding the points raised relating to the bar waiter and the manager who came out to speak with you following your complaint, please do not think they did not care or were not interested in speaking with you, as this simply is not the case. Everyone working at The Old Ship Hotel knows it is far better to be open with any guest who may have an issue and they are empowered to resolve issues in real time. Whilst I appreciate your frustration at the time of your complaint, being offensive about members of The Old Ship Team is not acceptable. The bar attendant, correctly sort the advice of the manager for assistance who is appointed to resolve issues/complaints. As I was not present at the time of the complaint I have investigated the full events before replying back to you. Following my enquiries, the events via the members of staff present were as follows. You complained to the bar attendant about the food, another of your party said she wasn’t particularly hungry hence didn’t eat a lot and another lady said there was nothing wrong with her food. The bar attendant then asked the manager for assistance, this was because you said that you wanted to give your feedback about the food ordered. The manager went to your table and asked you if everything was ok? You then informed the manager why you did not like the food (at one point using unpleasant language), the manager apologised for you not liking your sandwich. At that point the manager (from her understanding) thought everything else was ok with the food with regard to the rest of the guests you were with. The manager proceeded to explain, that she appreciated your point of view but if you reported the issue beforehand (as now most of the food was eaten) she would have been able to process a food refund. However the manager did offer you a round of drinks for free, the manager thanked you for your feedback. I apologise for any confusion or misunderstanding while you were with us at The Old Ship Hotel. I can assure you that we are fully compliant with food standards and that all the dishes on our menus are prepared fresh daily in accordance with regulations. Unfortunately, we are unable to please everybody all of the time with our menu choice of food and sometimes it comes down to a matter of individual taste. Still I am sorry it had such an impact on your visit. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Whilst I fully understand it’s an old (and beautiful) building, I feel that it’s not kept as well as it could be. It’s tired. The staff were great. The building itself really needs some love. Breakfast was very sub standard, especially considering the price. It’s close to being great but falls short.
