Myself and my family have stayed at the Old Ship several times and have always enjoyed it.The hotel and its staff has always had a warm and friendly atmosphere. This time a big group of our family visited for three nights for what should have been my daughters graduation celebration, she didn’t get one last year but we decided to celebrate anyway and chose the Old Ship. On arrival we checked in and all went to our rooms, it felt like the same hotel. My daughters stayed in a twin room on the third floor, this room was very cramped with the beds pushed together and only one bedside table on one side, the corridor that they stayed on had a permanent unpleasant smell which was really off putting! The other three rooms were King size and on the whole were fine except for my parents room on the 4th floor, when they arrived the carpet around one of the windows was completely soaked and when it rained the water ran in a sheet down the window and splashed back into the room if the window was only slightly open, their room also had a musty smell which meant they eventually bought an air freshener to try and cover. On the first evening we stayed for dinner and on the whole the service was ok however when booking I advised that we had two gluten free guests, the menu did have a few gluten free options but when we asked about gluten free bread the waitress advised that she ‘didn’t think so no’. Having placed our order I asked the waitress to please double check about the bread as it seemed incredible in this day and age that they wouldn’t have it, low and behold the gluten free bread arrived! At breakfast the next morning my mum asked for hot milk instead of tea or coffee but was again told ‘no we don’t do that I don’t think’. On the second morning we asked and was told the same thing and on the third morning we asked and got it, all different waiter/waitresses! The staff weren’t rude but the majority just seemed like they couldn’t be bothered, there were the odd one or two that really were great. Because of COVID you have to order your drinks and toast etc when you sit down and then you can go to the buffet to get you hot cooked breakfast, this seemed to work ok but on several occasions we were still waiting for drinks after 40 mins! On the second evening we went out for a meal and came back to the hotel hoping to watch the England game, only to be told that they couldn’t have it on because a live singer would be on, because it was raining the singer didn’t attend so we asked if we could have the football on again only to be then told we weren’t allowed to watch sport on the TV so no it couldn’t be turned on. One guest turned the tv on and a member of staff came over and turned it off only to be told if we wanted to watch it to go to our rooms that all had TVs in! On the final day we had checked out and brought all our luggage down to the front of the hotel waiting to be picked up, my daughter went to get a portion of chips and stood outside eating them while we waited only to be told that they couldn’t allow us to eat where we were standing, I explained that we had just checked out and we’re just waiting for our car to arrive but it didn’t make any difference! My daughter took 4 steps towards the pavement and this was then acceptable!! I can’t say we didn’t enjoy ourselves but there were lots of unnecessary things that started to grind us down. I won’t be going back which is a real shame but time to try a different Brighton seafront hotel I think!!! Such a shame!

Overnight girlie treat with friend on wowcher deal. Having read the previous reviews I was quite concerned but I needn’t have been. All staff very helpful and friendly. Room clean, tidy, large. No air con but large standing fan and ceiling fan were plenty. Fantastic afternoon tea included in our deal was plentiful and couldn’t fit it all in. Not sure if others were staying in the same hotel ! Our room was at the back with no view but it did not distract form a good overnight stay.

I was so disappointed with our stay. My friends purchased a gift voucher for my birthday for the price of a double room. As you put your prices up I had to pay an extra £100 to use the voucher. We were kindly upgraded to a sea view room but it wasn’t very peaceful or relaxing. I love the charm of an old hotel but it needs serious updating and not just cosmetically. The floorboards are so creaky that the upstairs guests/staff kept us up all night. I found our earbuds hidden under a sign the next morning! So frustrating! The breakfast was the shocking and the coffee was appalling!! So needed after a terrible nights sleep. The towels were old and scratchy. The sign posts to actually exit the room to the lobby took you now maze tour! The bed wasn’t that comfortable and the facilities were less than impressive for a 4* hotel. Way over priced and disappointing sadly.

We stayed for a weekend and the staff were excellent, very responsive to our requirements. The hotel could use a bit of repainting here and there, but benefits from an amazing location and good weekend entertainment. Would stay again.
