Travelers' Choice
The Pedn Olva, with the sea only thirty feet below and flanked by golden sands, is founded on blue-black granite rocks on the southern shores of St. Ives Harbour and Bay. Contemporary, romantic and breathtaking are but a few ways to describe the Pedn Olva, with its 30 distinctive bedrooms, restaurant, bar, terraces and outdoor heated swimming pool that make it an ideal stay for a getaway break, special meal or relaxing lunch. The plethora of windows facing the sea allows our guests to be as close as you can get to floating on the sea without leaving dry land. A safe haven for watching winter storms in front of a granite open fire, or seeing dolphins and seals playing in the bay from our sun drenched terraces.

If we had known in advance that our stay clashed with G7 we would probably have re-booked for later. In the event the traffic was OK and the disruption not too bad, but we were limited in what we could do and when. Local traders within St Ives reckoned that a lot of people had been put off visiting by all the advance publicity. Our first disappointment was being handed a written sheet on arrival and being told to read it. Some staff members had tested positive for Covid so as a result all public areas including the bar and restaurant were closed. We would have to go outside into the town for all meals including breakfast and there would be no room service. As everywhere was fully booked and we had no alternative we decided to stay and make the best of things. We had already pre booked two of our favourite restaurants for the first 2 nights of our stay. However our biggest disappointment was our room. - no 23 overlooking the pool. Someone at head office in St Austell had decided to redecorate all the rooms in a sludge green with period furniture. Totally inappropriate for a seaside hotel that had always been so light and airy, And the lighting had not been adjusted to compensate; it was too dark to read or to see into the recesses away from the big window. We sent photos to our daughter who designs top international hotels and she was horrified at what they had done. We had to ask for a kettle, and the water (on which we had commented 2 years ago) was never hot enough for a proper shower. The weather turned dull and damp so we were not even able to sit outside or to use the pool as it had been closed. If we had been able to sit and read in comfort in our room we might have stayed longer, but ITV news on our second night featured a story that there were now 13 confirmed Covid cases among the staff. We were feeling increasingly uncomfortable about finding secure places to eat and it was obvious that other visitors were checking out, although there was no official word or guidance from the hotel management. We left after 2 nights of our planned five and came back home. We were given a 50% discount, though on reflection I reckon £115 was too much to pay for dull dark room without proper hot water. We felt sorry for the staff - Mark was unfailingly helpful - and one can hardly blame them for the weather or for Covid. But I do sense that this place would be much better under local ownership and not being run by a pub chain. St Austell brew very nice beer, but they should not be referring to Pedn Olva as one of their pubs! The final straw came on Saturday (the day before we were due to return) when I received an email hoping we had enjoyed our holiday - a letter of apology would have been more appropriate - and inviting me to write a review for Trip Advisor! I had not thought of that, but seeing as they were so insensitive I thought I would!

We stayed at the beginning of June for two days... the manager and team could not have done more to make us comfortable and to feel welcome. This was a return visit and we were not disappointed. The food and service was excellent despite being short staffed. Covid precautions were in place and the staff took care... so sad to hear about the COVID outbreak. Obviously we’re getting tests but wish the hotel a speedy recovery. We will be back.

My wife is disabled so the hotel put us on the ground floor with a stunning view over the sea and bay with a lovely balcony. Yes the Hotel is understaffed at the moment and they have taken steps to reduce the number of people allowed in to compensate. We always had excellent service and never had to wait more than a few minuets. The fact that residents came first was a welcome change and took the worry out of finding somewhere to eat and drink. The Pool is small but a good depth and very warm. The food was excellent for the 10 meals we enjoyed there. We were there the day everyone came down to breakfast at once, an unusual occurrence we were told and did not whitness it again during our stay. I have stayed in hundreds of hotels over the last 10 years and none are perfect, but on the whole the staff treated us extreemly well and the hotel was nice.

The front of house chap was rude. This was followed up by a member of the waiting team not wearing a mask. We questioned this that he was unwell and he said he was fine. We later questioned another member of staff. They said he’d got laryngitis which meant he couldn’t wear a mask. I’ve now received a positive covid test. Is this a coincidence that they are now closed due to a covid breakout amongst their staff? Not happy and will not be returning.

We went this week and had a fantastic meal, the ambiance, staff and food were all amazing as was the view of Portminster beach. We had mussels and a crab starter, seafood linguini and I had hake. For desserts panna cotta and he had sticky toffee pudding. All was excellent sticky toffee pudding was tasty and light unlike the stodgy version in some places. We washed it down with the waitress recommendation of a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc which was very tasty refreshing and a great suggestion. The staff were lovely and friendly , explaining why the fabulous newly renovated terrace was not open ( staffing issues affecting many places in the town and indeed the country in hospitality ) . We will return . Keep up. The great work thank you
