We joined friends last month to stay for 4 nights at the Atlantic in Newquay. On arrival first impressions were good although the car park was narrow and difficult to negotiate especially as someone had double parked (not hotel's fault) and we had to reverse all the way back out! Inside there is a one way system in operation and hand gel and the app to scan so it felt Covid safe. The lift it seems had been out of order for quite a few weeks when we were there in mid October and seems from current reviews to still be the case. We were definitely NOT informed beforehand and it is quite difficult as there are two long flights of stairs per floor - we had 4 flights to the 2nd floor and mask wearing makes this uncomfortable . Our "sea view" room had an unfortunate view of a huge flat roof with a tarpaulin and cement bags covering an obvious leak although we did get to see the lovely sunsets. The rooms are a bit tired but ours was a good size and adequate although very hot even with the radiator turned off and the windows that only open a crack. My biggest bugbear was that the pillows only had a single flimsy cotton pillowcase between you and the pillow - no pillow protectors or linings?? So it didn't feel very hygienic. We bumped into the housekeeper in our room when we came back from breakfast and she was not wearing an apron or a mask which surprised me - especially as the hotel make a point of saying in their information about the measures being taken that housekeeping wear PPE. Breakfast was good with full English and other choices all served to the table. All waiting staff wore masks and plastic gloves. Personally I would prefer to see bare hands that were frequently washed and sanitised because I think gloves give a false sense of protection and allow for cross contamination. Dinner was a mixed bag. Our group of six were booked on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis. It was disappointing to note that the menu barely changed from night to night and choice was limited. Also there seemed to be no uniformity when serving identical dishes to more that one person on our table. We found there were actual ingredients and garnishes missing - it was quite strange! The restrictions due to Covid are understandable but Chef needs to ring the changes with daily Specials when guests are dining several days running. So we raised this point with Reception. Subsequently, we had a problem one evening when waiting staff told us that Chef had saved lamb for us as it was new to the menu and running out. Four of us took this option gratefully but only one portion was good, one inedible and immediately returned for exchange and two of us stupidly soldiered through. It was way too fatty and gristly and we're not fussy eaters. The waiter made us more upset because having told him when he collected our plates about the problem he was seen (in the open plan kitchen) just putting it in the bin and not talking to chef. When we challenged him he said he didn't want to upset Chef during service!! Never mind upsetting the customers!! Would we go back? Possibly as the location is good but definitely only for Bed and Breakfast. In times when Covid restrictions are lifted and it is easier to eat out then this would be the better option. Ask for a room with a proper sea view not a roof view and check if the lift is working. Staff did offer to help with our luggage but at that point we didn't know about the lift and they didn't tell us on check in.

We booked this hotel for a much needed week away and I definitely think we made a good choice. The reception and check in area is beautifully decorated and very very clean and walking up the stairs it felt like you were in a cruise ship, it was very grand looking. The Silks restaurant is also very beautifully decorated and the food was absolutely gorgeous and the staff very friendly and attentive. Now to the rooms, we had a room on first floor which we were very thankful for because the lift was out of action during our stay which we were informed about before we arrived. The view from our room was fab, theres no better feeling than opening the curtains and seeing the sea, even though the windows were a tad dirty, the general cleanliness in the room was ok, a few cobwebs on the ceiling etc but with the room having such high ceilings its to be expected I guess. The bathroom was fab and had a great shower and a fancy bath. I think the rooms could do with a major facelift to bring them inline with the standard of the reception area. The hotel offers a fab breakfast in the amazing breakfast room, and if you are very lucky you'll get given a table with a stunning view of the sea. Breakfast consists of a cooked option of sausage, bacon a choice of eggs, mushroom and tomato, all of which I believe is local produce. Theres many other options such as cereals, pastries, toast all served with fresh coffee, tea or a selection juices. The breakfast was very filling and kept us going until the evening, the food was delicious and the staff were very attentive. One thing I will mention is the hotel is at the top of a very steep hill which may be a bit of an issue if your less mobile also the carpark is a little awkward to navigate. All in all this was a fab hotel, we felt very confident that staff were doing all they could to make it covid safe and despite the 6 hour drive wed love to return one day.

We selected this hotel because of the good reviews on several sites. We were very disappointed with the visit of three days. We appreciate that things were difficult because of covid, but some things were inexcusable. When we arrived we were told that the lift was temporarily out of action, and our room was on the third floor. The lift was not repaired during our stay. By the time we had unpacked several issues about the room became clear. The clock/CD player did not work, and had to be replaced by another clock (without CD). The TV remote would not work properly from the bed. It was supposed to have been fixed but still did not control the TV from the bed. One of the attractions of the hotel was the outside pool. This was in a poor condition (leaves, etc) and could not be used. Fortunately there was an indoor pool. The most serious issues were as follows: 1. The shower cubicle had black mould most of which was cleaned off after I complained. 2. The illuminated mirror by the wash hand basins was dirty, and the light did not work. This was fixed later. 3. The wash hand basins both had cracks in them, and there was a large crack in a tile by the WC. 4. The duvet was in a very poor condition - at home we would have thrown this away! 5. On the morning we left the shower was inoperable. it either had no spray, or was scalding hot. I had to use the hand shower in the bath. All in all we were not very happy, and did not think we had value for the money (we paid £215 per night). We discussed the problems with the duty manager before we left, and she said we could have asked for another room. We were only staying three nights, and did not want the hassle of moving our effects. In any event if there was a better room available, why weren't we offered it when we arrived?

This is our third visit to the atlantic hotel, we are local to cornwall with this hotel being only 40 minutes away. This is our third visit and it holds a special place in our hearts due to it being the first hotel we ever stayed in as a couple. The lift was out of order when I arrived, which I completely understand with covid, it wasn't an issue but it may be for some. I feel on the website it should explain this aswell as no sauna, jacuzzi, no room service or lunchtime meals. When I called before our stay I was told they had not updated their website, but this was only in relation to restaurants. We also couldn't find a bar that was open. Apparently there is one (we are still here at the moment but I dare not ring reception again to ask!) It is just all not very clear. Also you are paying the same hotel price as always so they should be more upfront on the website about the missing facilities. The room was lovely with exceptional views and a lovely bathroom. There is a but though... I must admit the price of this hotel you would expect a proper double bed and not two singles pushed together. I found that a bit naff to be honest. Again, based on price. I did think, as other reviews have said, this was my husbands 40th birthday treat. We had a letter in the room saying happy 40th but let's be honest would a bottle of wine/ champagne (15 pounds in morrisons down the road/ or anything somewhat special) gone a miss. Any guests let alone repeat should be looked after in my opinion. As far as staff are concerned I did call reception several times, for instance no fridge in the room, this was quickly rectified. Booking the pool etc. Calling about afternoon tea which I was told it was on the day before our stay, then off when we got here. I did feel like I was made to feel a bit of a pain for calling them, probably four times during our visit but maybe if the information was in the paperwork you wouldn't have to keep calling to ask things. I did also find it a bit worrying that two thirds of the staff also ware their masks under their noses. It is one of those things where you want to say something but you can't because you feel like you would be being rude. All in all, I would stay here again, for nostalgia and the views but just be aware if you are staying during this pandemic and you have stayed here before you will be paying the same for much less facility wise without being told.

My partner organised a surprise weekend away at The Atlantic Hotel. The hotel was lovely and the view from the room was fantastic. The staff were nice and helpful.However, on entering the bathroom the stench of blocked drains was grim and didn’t disappear after 3 days. The lift isn’t working which after going up 6 flights of stairs several times a day became tedious especially whilst wearing a mask ! The housekeeping was a bit to be desired, scum in the bath, mould around the plug and food on the table in the room, seemingly small things to rectify that would have made an ok stay into a great stay.
