The Portbyhan Hotel is situated in an unrivalled position right in the heart of Looe, allowing guests to relish the panoramic views of the vibrant harbour with only a short stroll into Looe town. The Edwards family, who operate an award-winning holiday company in South Wales, purchased the hotel in June 2013 and have since invested over £2.1 Million in a full-refurbishment of the exterior, bedrooms, restaurant, bar and public areas. These renovations, the location and the excellent services that the hotel offers have all contributed to the Portbyhan Hotel recently winning “Best Individual Hotel” at the prestigious National Coach Tourism Awards. Our public areas are also open to non-residents therefore if you are passing and wish to meet the team, sample our locally sourced cuisine or simply relax and enjoy a cold beverage on our roof top garden, please feel free, we would love to see you!

    Best placed hotel in looe
We stayed at the hotel in a family room overlooking the harbour inlet , the room was clean and tidy,it was a nice sized double room but a little tight once the extra single bed was added ,the hotel is perfectly placed in looe, it has a lovely bar and the restaurant food was very good indeed .breakfast came as part of the staycation package and had a very good selection ,the staff were friendly and helpful throughout, Joe at the bar knew how to do a decent pimms with all the fruit etc and was always smiling and attentive. Jackie (who seemed to be there 24/7 ) was very helpful and served us for breakfast most mornings with a smile . All of the staff including those in the background (cleaning / cooking) did a great job . There are two pubs within a couple of mins walk either way and all the other bars ,restaurants and shops just over the bridge. Parking was approx £8 per night or free if your happy to walk 10mins up the hill which is what I choose to do, looe itself is a great base for visiting other places ,we did the Eden project , fowey (pronounced foy) and also st michaels mount and st ives which were a full day out but worth the drive. I would happily return to the hotel for another visit ,if I did have any little issues I guess it would be some extra wall hooks or shelves and possibly a small fridge in the room,
Dear Marc H, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review of your recent stay with us. The team and I are delighted that you enjoyed your stay, service, food and the surrounding area that has so much to offer. I will be sure to pass on your lovely feedback to the team. Please do let me know if I can be of any assistance with a future visit to the hotel. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Kind regards, Chris

    Most Excellent
Just returned from 4 nights in this hotel, on a half board basis. The evening meal was very good indeed with plenty of choice followed by tea and coffee which are not always included. Also on the table every night was a jug of water, not usually included. The breakfast was also very good with the usual cereals, full English etc but no pastries (not a deal breaker !!). I was very pleased to learn that between 8pm and 10pm each night it is Happy Hour with a 25% discount on drinks. This made the evenings financially very reasonable and ensured you remained in the hotel rather than seeking out the local hostelries. Also the wine was very reasonably priced, if you are a red drinker head for the Australian Shiraz, an amazing wine at £18 a bottle. The rooms can be 'tired' and, indeed, we had some problems with our initial room. This was soon remedied by the staff the following morning by transferring us to another room which was fine. No drama. The view from the hotel and its position could not be bettered, giving a few minutes walk into Looe itself. The staff, I must say, were lovely and very hard working. All in all a pleasant stay and I would not hesitate returning for Round 2.
Dear Archie C, Thank you for your recent review of your stay with us at the Portbyhan Hotel. I am delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. I will be sure to pass on your feedback to the team. We look forward to welcoming you back for round 2 :) Kind regards, Chris and the team

    Great location, friendly staff
Perfect location. Parking isn't available at the hotel, but there are a few nearby car parks to chose from. We parked just to the left, past the hotel, it's pricey (£17/24hrs), but was ideal to unload. We chose Looe for paddle boarding & it was just perfect - highly recommemded. We paddled both ways along the harbour & the views are stunning, just remember to keep an eye on the tide times. The hotel staff were very friendly & helpful, they even stored our paddleboards in their cellar overnight so that we could use them again the following day (without having to deflate & reinflate again). We paid a little extra & booked a harbour view room, now although very clean - the rooms are very basic & dated. The view was lovely, alebit our room was exceptionally hot as there isn't any air con. Breakfast was delicious! Portions are small, due to COVID you can no longer self-serve (& rightly so). But, it was cooked well & the staff are very attentive. In summary, hotel staff are what makes the hotel, they were very helpful & they all maintain social distancing/wear masks.
Dear Laureni0801, Thank you for your recent review of your stay with us. I am delighted to read that on the whole you enjoyed your stay and were well looked after. I do hope you will return to us one day, we'd be happy to store your paddle boards again. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Kind regards, Chris

Dear trish123tg, Thank you for your review. I am glad you had a pleasant stay with us but I was disappointed that we fell short on breakfast. This is not the feedback generally received and I hope will not deter you from returning. Whilst our location gives a lovely harbour view, the local painters (seagulls) can often decorate shortly afterwards which we try our best to keep on top of. Hopefully, we will welcome you again in the near future. Kind regards Lindsey

We went for the Sunday carvery and although we hadn't booked a table they found us a table in the bar next to the window. They food was lovely. Yorkshire puddings amazing. Plenty of choice of vegetables and lovely gravy. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Lovely and clean place. My only criticism is the windows overlooking the river. Who ever designed them sho8ld really think again. They look new and when you sit at the table you only see the road or roof tops there is a big frame right through the middle so you can't see the water and boats. BUT I would certainly visit again.

Dear rwb28, Thank you for your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your Sunday lunch with us and very much hope to welcome you again in future. Perhaps next time we can book you in to the restaurant where the views are uninterrupted. I appreciate what you are saying about the windows - but on stunning summer days these windows retract fully for amazing views too :) Kind regards Lindsey

Stayed for two nights over Looe Weekender. Great hotel and easy walking to the middle of town. Lovely to stay on the west side and look out over the quay. Reception staff were brilliant and met our couple of extra asks really quickly. Breakfast was great and the evening restaurant is pretty good!

Stayed for a long weekend with Crusader coaches, and we were impressed, all staff were polite and helpful, our room, which had a balcony overlooking the estuary was modern and spotless (well worth the extra charge). We had stayed several years ago, and there have been great improvements since. Both breakfast and our evening meals were very good, served by efficient and friendly staff, there were menu choices for all courses, no problems at all. The terrace bar is a real chill out area with a great view of Looe harbour, waiter service and great cocktails. This hotel is located very conveniently for access to the town, not always the case in hilly Looe. Thanks to all staff, especially Jackie, we will certainly be staying at the Portbyhan hotel again.

- great view ✅ - Nice atmosphere ✅ - Incredible food ✅ - Varied menu ✅ - The best staff team ✅ Booking a last minute table for eight isn’t easy, and honestly I wasn’t expecting it to be the best meal I’d had in a long time. However, it was. The team working were incredible, tentative but not too in your face. I hadn’t realised how much I missed pre-pandemic dining where you don’t have a two hour slot to get in and get out. It felt like dining at a friends and not wanting to leave their dinner party. 100% would recommend. Only constructive criticism I have, is to add service charge to the bill or allow your staff to add tips onto a card payment. I wanted to tip these lovely people and could only rustle up a measly £6 in change. So until this is changed make sure you bring some cash to tip them!

Dear 961phoebet, Thank you for your review. We are over the moon to receive feedback like this and the team are absolutely delighted. The tips have always been done on cash basis so the team benefit 100% rather than having any tax implication. However, we are in the process of setting up a gratuity option via card as we do get more requests for this. Hopefully, we will welcome you again very soon! Kind regards Lindsey

We had a lovely weekend together n Looe. The staff at the hotel were fantastic and couldn’t do enough for us. We had our small dog Alfie with us and they provided a little gift bag and never allowed us to eat breakfast in the bar area so he could come with us. The hotel rooms were simple but very clean and comfortable.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel during a coach tour(Bibbys) of Cornwall, mainly to visit the Eden Project. Our room 111 was large well fitted out plus a very large balcony overlooking Looe. Again the bathroom was large absolutely nothing to complain about. The food was good three choices for starters, main course and desserts for evening meal. Breakfast had plenty of choice also, if you wanted anything extra just ask and it was done. Lovely view of the Looe and the river whilst you were eating wody hat more could you want. The staff couldn't do enough to please everybody, that itself is a hard task because I am sure trying to satisfy everybody is nigh on impossible, they were always smiling and enquiring on how the holiday was going. A nice hotel and if we were down there again would gladly stay and ask for room 111. Thank you everybody for making our holiday a delight.

I have no axe to grind and will try to give a fair and unbiased opinion following our stay at Portbyhan in July 2023. We went with a coach tour, so no parking problems - unfortunately, if you go self drive there's NO parking available - none! All of the hotel has been refurbished to a good standard - both decor and furniture. Our room was on the top floor, and whilst I understand there were other rooms which guests were very happy with ours was fairly small and not to a god layout. There was no seating other than a sofa positioned directly under the television and facing away from it, so to watch TV you had to sit (or lie) on the bed which was positioned at exactly 90 degrees to the TV! Not good! And not everyone who stays in that room will have the same problem, but the gentleman in the adjoining room snored very loudly all night! Reviews of the hotel generally say that breakfast is excellent - in fact it is simply OK. At least the plates were hot which was a help and there was a constant plentiful supply of the usual cooked breakfast items, but the continental breakfast was extremely poor, and the fruit salad - well this was rather a joke - if you could locate a grape or a piece of melon amongst the extremely liberal amount of apple then you felt you had probably won the lottery! As for evening meals, well frankly these left lots to be desired - at the best I think the majority of people on our coach said they were simply basic and a disappointing meal to end the day. There was entertainment on three evenings whilst we were there - male vocalists and OK. Whilst our friends had stayed at the Portbyhan in the past they were pleased that we were going there and said it was a lovely hotel and one of the best they'd been to with the tour company. If you've read all of this review I think you'll realise that we're unlikely to be revisiting anytime in the near future. My genuine appraisal would probably award maybe 3 stars out of five. I hope you've found this helpful.

Dear 2013Holidayreviewer, Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback as this is vital to the continued success of our business. We are a traditional building and along with the charm of the quirky layout, it does sometimes prove a challenge and I very much understand your comments regarding the sofa and TV - perhaps this is something we could look at in quieter months to improve. I am disappointed we did not exceed your expectations with our breakfast and evening meal offering. The feedback we receive is very good throughout and we do our best to offered a varied menu to cater to various palettes. I have fed your comments back to our kitchen team. Our entertainment does vary and we are always on the look out for new talent and varying options for our guests. I hope you enjoyed your overall stay and thank you again for your feedback. Kind regards Lindsey Bailey-Lewis
