#3 of 8 hotels in Looe
Travelers' Choice
The Portbyhan Hotel is situated in an unrivalled position right in the heart of Looe, allowing guests to relish the panoramic views of the vibrant harbour with only a short stroll into Looe town. The Edwards family, who operate an award-winning holiday company in South Wales, purchased the hotel in June 2013 and have since invested over £2.1 Million in a full-refurbishment of the exterior, bedrooms, restaurant, bar and public areas. These renovations, the location and the excellent services that the hotel offers have all contributed to the Portbyhan Hotel recently winning “Best Individual Hotel” at the prestigious National Coach Tourism Awards. Our public areas are also open to non-residents therefore if you are passing and wish to meet the team, sample our locally sourced cuisine or simply relax and enjoy a cold beverage on our roof top garden, please feel free, we would love to see you!

Disappointed with Hotel room, so small, distant river view. An-suite tiny, no storage in bathroom. Toilet roll holder coming off wall, We arrived on the 5th day of our trip around Devon and Cornwall, so quite a bit of luggage, no where to store empty suitcases. Chest of drawers, drawers were sticking. Creaking floors and very noisy plumbing, which I spoke to receptionist about, who was very dismissive, no sound proofing. Breakfast, wait to be seated, waitress comes takes you to your table, someone will come and take your order, why not take the drinks order then. No someone comes with a clipboard and tick list, They want your order from continental to cooked at the same time. Breakfast was supplied to a set cost no offer of extra tea, coffee or juice or toast, as we only had continental I would have thought some extra toast could have been supplied, considering we only had 3 slices of toast to start with.

This hotel is good and bad in parts. The cleanliness and service are very good, but atmosphere and food leave a lot to be desired. WE had room 312 which was a small double room with river view, and a very small shower room, akin to those on cruise ships, but no shelf for toiletries. the room was serviced daily to a high standard The public rooms, however were modern, wood effect, glass and stainless steel, with no soft lounge area. The so called riverside restaurant was like a works canteen. Because we were part of a coach party,we were treated as a flock of sheep and given a set time for breakfast in 15 minute slots which we had to keep to. Dinner was set at 6-30 with no flexibility. Breakfast was very good from an extensive menu. Unlike dinner which we had to order at breakfast, from a very limited menu of basic canteen food which was tasteless and barely lukewarm. Since Looe is a fishing port I would have expected some local fresh fish. No Chance! The wine list was overpriced bottom shelf plonk which you had to buy at the bar and carry the bottle and glasses to the table.

Room 108 described as superior with a £120 top up for a balcony view was smaller than our medium sized kitchen . The bathroom was tiny but the shower was the best I have ever experienced for simplicity to operate. Alex the Breakfast Supervisor was first class ably assisted by Sharon. Breakfast was superb. The hotel was very clean, and seemingly covid secure,eg all the tables in the eating area were well spaced out which gave the appearance of a school dinner area. No atmosphere whatsoever . This was a coach trip with the theme being Tinsel and Turkey . All meals were served at the table, and the sweets were probably the best of a set menu in our opinion.

Dear graham w, Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. I am delighted to read that on the whole you had a lovely stay with us. Unfortunately we are not a purpose built hotel, therefore all rooms are of a different size. Your feedback on the room is not a common theme, none the less I appreciate everyone has different expectations. Thank you again for your feedback. Thanks Chris

Just back from a 5 day trip to the Portbyhan hotel, the hotel was clean and tidy, fresh linen every day, but sadly the meals were something else, first night we had wild mushroom soup that looked like it had been dredged up from the river outside, a couple of days later we had turkey pie looking like dog food when cut open, also on the plate was "dried up" mushy peas. On a positive note, the staff were fantastic, very polite and attentive. Would I return, Sadly "NO":

Overall a very good hotel in good location, rooms are not large but are adequate all the staff are very polite & helpful. The only point I have was the evening meals were luke warm & not hot, seemed the table service for each course did not commence until every one had finished the starter or main meal.

Dear D9106TIgrahamb, Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. I will discuss your food comments with the head chef. I can see from your booking that you travelled as part of a group, with this in mind, we seat the group at the same time, therefore everyone gets fed at the same time. Thank you again for your feedback. Kind regards, Chris
