The Chester Grosvenor, nestled in the heart of Chester, is lauded for its spotless cleanliness and prime location, making it a convenient base for exploring local shops and attractions. While the hotel's amenities and spacious rooms are generally appreciated, guests have called out additional fees for breakfast and parking, which some feel diminish the value proposition. The service receives mixed reviews, ranging from praise for attentiveness to criticism over occasional disorganization. Though the atmosphere exudes traditional charm, a few travelers suggest the decor could use refreshing.

This is a very famous hotel. So a couple of significant warnings to start. “ When is a spa not a Spa?” Arrived Wednesday to be told Spa closed every Tuesday and Wednesday. No matter we thought we’ll pop in Thursday. Thursday told we couldn’t book or just turn up for sauna etc. we had to call 3.00 pm to see if there was space. Space was limited to 5! Ridiculous for an alleged really good 5 star. Second we had prepaid breakfast to discover at the hotel if we wanted more than what actually was a very very limited continental breakfast it was an extra £25 for two. Again 5 star? Enough of the gripes. The hotel is the perfect situation right in the heart of glorious Chester. Three minutes walk from the wonderful cathedral ( which is staffed by the most helpful volunteers we’ve encountered in English cathedrals) The architecture of the centre is exquisite: tutor , Georgian and Victorian merging together in perfect harmony. The restaurants and cafes were first class in Chester . Fabulous Italian with extraordinary food was La Fattoria.we are in our 70 s so when Karina at the hotel suggested this p,ace with such zest she warned it was very loud. We LOVED it, completely full on a Wednesday night in February with lots of celebrations.Katrina got us the last table available at 8.30. The restaurant is on Bridge street 5 mins walk from hotel. The other restaurant was Chez Joules on Upper Northgate Street. A French restaurant was recommended by Leah at Florence shop bridge street. Exquisite food.again we got the last table on a Thursday night. Just a point about both restaurants they were very i expensive for the quality: £87 and £67 for two . We will certainly return to both. Back to hotel. Executive bedroom had a very comfortable bed. Adequate bathroom. My wife loved the “ old fashioned” wallpaper. Not a touch of monochrome or grey. It was beautiful. The hotel staff were excellent.Tatiana andKarina on reception we wonderful.! Very warm and extremely helpful regarding tips to get the most out of our visit. Valeria serving breakfast was outstanding . The young lady who provided housekeeping for our room was perfect. I did get her name but I think she may have been Polish. So finally we got a deal through a booking agency £298 for two mid week two nights. At that price it was very well worth it. To have paid the full prices offered on website and other booking agencies perhaps not.

Do not waste your money living off its past reputation, needs a complete overhaul rooms so outdated and tired chipped paintwork and furniture. Had to move rooms as the room we got was filthy the headboard covered in dust and someone else’s hair 🤢 bathroom mouldy and dusty Was over charged £25for a cooked breakfast that we never even had. Also had the worst afternoon tea I’ve ever had was an absolute joke the food was disgusting and was a complete waste of money Only thing good about this hotel was the doormen who are lovely . Most members were very rude and uninterested only a couple of staff members were interested in doing there job .

Waited for ages for casual dining. We were told we were not allowed to wait at the bar even though at least two couples walked in after us straight to the bar. Eventually sat at a table with menus . Waited ………waited……..waited The gentelam at the entrance was on his phone The lady sat next to us said the service had gone down recently We waited …….. Then left Not sure why this place thinks it’s better than everyone else because it’s not The rooms are small and the spa is a joke

Very nice hotel in a great, central location. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. Especially the front of house, who always had a big smile! La Brasserie restaurant had a lovely setting and the rib eye steak is definitely worth a try.

We have stayed in quite a few hotels in the last year and always seemed to find fault as in had to nove rooms due to things not working in the rooms but we had a really great experience here. Great location. The best place for shopping and exploring Chester. The room (148) was a good size and very clean. Bed was really comfy. If you like a view, this is not the room for you but I guess you could ask for a room that has one. We used the spa where I had an amazing facial. We had the continental breakfast, you choose from the menu what you would like. They also offer this as room service. We had drinks in the bar and sat in the window, great place for relaxing and watching the world go by. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We definitely will return.

What a pity, I love this hotel but this time it was so poor. Couldn’t get to it, wasn’t offered valet parking when I said we were lost. No service at all. At breakfast the jam and also separately the sauce were both opened and used. Service poor. Drinks service the night before poor, didn’t listen to anything we asked for, more like a 2 star hotel not 5 anymore. So disappointed

Hotel is chintzy out dated and overpriced when booking room with breakfast please be aware that you only receive a continental breakfast and if you want a cooked breakfast you will be charged for it I think it’s a liberty and a misrepresentation that should not be allowed .

With 5-star hotels there's an expectation of quality and attention to detail or, where things do go awry, they are sorted quickly, efficiently, and not repeated, This hotel fell way short of the mark on all of these criteria on our three-night mid-week break. Where expectations were not met: 1) Disposition of the front-desk staff. Morose and unwelcoming - it wouldn't hurt them to crack a smile or say "good morning"; 2) Our room keys stopped working on two consecutive days. Apparently they'd been set up incorrectly on check-in. Once was a mistake. Twice was inept; 3) We had to ask for milk, tea-bags, water to be replenished - not done as part of room servicing; 4) We had to ask, at 3pm, for our room to be serviced; 5) We were billed for the continental breakfast despite inclusion in the room rate. It was deducted from the final bill but shouldn’t have been on there anyhow - told it's a "system thing". 6) For a much-advertised mid-week break why is the spa routinely closed on two weekdays. Where expectations were met or exceeded: 7) Exceptional door and restaurant staff - friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Perhaps they could train the front-desk staff. 8) Location - great for city sight-seeing; 9) Quality of continental breakfast; 10) Most of the spa facilities A school report might shorten this to "must try harder" or "careless, could do better" or. Or both. As it stands, the Grosvenor doesn't deserve 5 stars, either in a review or as a hotel.

We have stayed many times and always enjoyed our stay. Staff are exceptional, friendly and helpful. Room was nice with lovely wallpaper and a king size bed with enormous headboard. Only criticism. Bathroom needs upgrading. Room 228 Meals in Brasserie were delicious and highly recommended. We intend to return in a few months.

Pleasant enough, but service not 5* except doorman who was great :) We stayed for a two night break, having treated ourselves to a bit of luxury, booking was easy and were welcomed when we arrived an check in was simple and straightforward, rooms was nice and well decorated to a good standard and made to feel welcome. You expect prices to be high but for that your expectation for service (which is essentially what you are paying for) is also set at a reasonably high bar. We went for a drink in the bar areas, greeted and shown to a comfortable table, menu handed over, it took more than 15 minutes for someone to then take our order and ultimately a further 15 for it to be delivered so from seating to a drink30 minutes ! It was not busy at all. Breakfast is good and plentiful but make sure you ask for more items if you have not had you fill, they are a little skimpy on some initially but to be fair will top up but you have to ASK rather than the expectation of is everything ok or can we get you anything else, that reasonable expectation of 5* We went for a drink the next evening, it was a little busier but had a similar experience this time too 28 mins, I don't normally clock watch but on this occasion I wanted to make sure it was not just me! So overall nice hotel, but the servcie is just not as I would expect it to be based on other 5*s we go to throughout the year, shame as a little polishing of the service would make it great
