The hosts were just wonderful! Very clean, perfect location, and well stocked kitchen. A stone's throw from the beach. In addition, can walk to a food truck for a taco lunch and to the bowling club for dinner & drinks.

Felt like I was a million miles away from the city life of Auckland .... A delightful, quiet community on the west coast of NZ. Beach is nearby -- 5 min walk. Beach is picturesque. I loved the slow pace and serenity of the community. Nice hikes nearby and beautiful sunsets every night. The accommodations were superb and complete -- large living room with a full kitchen and a large bedroom. Julia was a wonderful host and a pleasure to get to know!

At Black Sands Lodge we stayed in the huge King Kauri apartment which is set amongst magnificent trees and lush foliage. It was completely different from the hotels and motels that we stayed at before and afterwards. Breakfast on the deck was a delight. It was marvellous to be so close to the beach which has thundering surf and is dominated by the magnificent Lion Rock. It is the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful coastal scenery to the west of Auckland and the lack of street lighting means that the night sky is amazing. We had a problem with the hire car that would have been hard to solve but for the considerable help that Julia gave us on a day when she could ill afford the time for such a distraction.

Black Sands Lodge is a very cozy appartment less than a 5 minutes walk away from the surfer beach. Beauftifuly embedded in lots of green, we spend some beautiful days here. Good local recommendations provided by the hosts.

Black Sands was recommended to me buy the owner of Elevation Restaurant on Scenic Road in Waitakere. I booked for two nights because I needed a rest from all my other travels in NZ. I wanted to do nothing. Julia and Bobby are wonderfully kind and full of the best information about where to go for food and walks. They also brought me over a bottle of wine since there is nowhere to buy liquor nearby. The beautiful beach is a 2 minute walk and at end of April is sparsely populated. No noise, just surf. The Cafe has excellent food, WIFI, magazines, and coffee, wine, and beer. The store has things to cook in your cabin. I was in Tui cabin, modern, with one q bed. There was everything needed to cook, sleep, watch TV, extra blankets too. There are 2 decks, both private. The only annoying thing was the shower which took 15 minutes to get warm and then the temp could hardly be adjusted from scalding hot to cold. This would be a problem when staying an extended time and I felt guilty using so much water. For being so close to the beach, this is a quiet and beautiful spot. If I get back to NZ, I will definitely stay here.
