Located within the heart of Desolation Sound, Klahoose Wilderness Resort resides upon Homfray Channel between the Coast Mountain peaks of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast and the Northern Islands of the Salish Sea known to many as Desolation Sound. Newly arrived guests join together on the lodge’s verandah where they welcomed with a traditional Klahoose greeting. Worries instantly disappear as osprey call across the Sound, the vision of an Orca’s distinct dorsal fin breaks the water’s surface, and the ocean breeze wafts through the surrounding conifer forest. Klahoose Wilderness Resort provides an intimate, worry-free experience for families, couples, and individuals who wish to escape into a glorious natural environment, home to a set of the most biodiverse ecosystems on our planet. A visitor’s day fills with adventures, transformational experiences that may include watching Grizzly bears fishing for salmon, kayaking beside a pod of porpoises, and forest hikes into an ancient western red cedar grove. Given its seclusion, Klahoose Wilderness Resort is surprisingly accessible. Guests from Vancouver, Seattle, Vancouver Island, and beyond can travel via air (from Vancouver its a 35 minute scheduled flight to Powell River or 1 hour charter seaplane direct to our dock), by car and ferry (half day drive), or boat (45 minutes from Lund to the Resort) to convenient boat shuttle departure sites in Lund on the Sunshine Coast and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Desolation Sound has been referred as the “Serengeti of North America” for good reason, given its abundance of large marine and terrestrial mammals. Orca and humpback whales, porpoises, harbour seals, and dolphins can be seen throughout the year. Bald eagles, osprey, and great blue herons are just three of dozens of avian species that reside in this region. Clams, oysters, crab, spotted prawns, and other shellfish, as well as all five salmon species, form the base diet for these wild species as well as in the indigenous tradition for guests at the lodge. Inlets of the Desolation Sound are famous for one of the most robust populations of grizzlies in the world. Klahoose First Nation also owns and operates the grizzly bear viewing tours, seasonal and wild bear tour observations located in remote Toba Inlet located just 40 minutes by boat from the resort. Natural exploration anchors the foundation of the lodge’s activities. Indigenous guides lead guests on nature and cultural excursions in one of the largest temperate rainforests on earth, and nearby Cortes Island where reside the Klahoose community. Sea kayakers, stand-up paddle borders and intrepid swimmers take advantage of the warm calm waters of the Homfray Channel. Helicopter Tours including heli-hiking, heli-paddle, heli-fly-fishing and glacier walks can also be arranged upon request. Fishing charters are also available. The resort has something to offer for travelers of all ages and interests. The spectacular Lodge at Klahoose Wilderness Resort provides an intimate environment, a 6,100-square foot timber structure hewn of local cedar. Four spacious guest rooms in the main lodge and 3 separate cedar cabins can accommodate an average 14 guests to maximum capacity of 26 guests. The Resort is ideal for private groups and multi-generation family gateway or special occasion such as a small wedding. Each guest room and cabin is tastefully decorated with indigenous artwork from surrounding coastal communities and common space conveys breathtakingly beautiful vistas of Desolation Sound. Guests come together for morning coffee and, after another exceptional day, gather again for evening cocktails from the wraparound deck as the setting sun illuminates the Homfray Channel. Every morning in Desolation Sound an astounding diversity of wildlife awakens to forage, nest, and explore their pristine habitat. For a precious few days from mid-august to mid-October guests are invited within this sublime environment to observe grizzly bears in their natural habitat.
