Great Bear Lodge is located 50 air miles from Port Hardy, British Columbia. The fully self-contained floating lodge is situated at an outstanding wildlife viewing location. This is a place of spectacular beauty where one can still find the silence and solitude of another era. From this location we operate our Grizzly Bear viewing program. The charming floating lodge has eight bedrooms. The common area is a comfortable place for relaxing and listening to natural history presentations from our willdife biologists. Each bedroom has an ensuite shower. The wind and solar powered lodge is in keeping with our commitment to low-impact ecotourism. Natural wood decks surround the lodge, a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying the beauty of the scenery.

Understood - the lodge is in the heart of a temperate rainforest - so when it rains it really rains! Luckily the lodge provides really effective wet-weather outerwear - so we were always dry. Upside of the rain is the ‘full’ waterfalls and freshness of the environment. The lodge wildlife guides are very knowledgeable - they really look after your safety and work incredibly hard to facilitate the bear watching and wildlife spotting. This location is a set in a very ‘natural habitat’ so it is really fascinating to see the wildlife - and we were not disappointed with our experience. The accommodation is to a good standard - and the food and beverages ‘simple but hearty’. The were plenty of organised activities between meals so the absence of WiFi and TV was not an issue. You would have to be picky to find fault with the whole Great Bear Lodge experiences. Easy to recommend.

Can't rate this enough - would have given 10 out of 5 if it were possible. From the moment you arrive at the office at Port Hardy, to the moment you leave everything is managed superbly, with no fuss and no issue - the attention to detail is amazing, all focused around you, the customer, and also the wildlife and environment. The food and hospitality is amazing, the tour guides knowledge and willingness to share that knowledge outstanding, and the whole experience is second to none. Everything you need to be out in the wilderness is supplied - crocs to wear indoors, wet weather gear, boots, suits to keep you warm, gloves and hats and and and We were lucky with the weather and the wildlife viewing - a trip of a lifetime that we will remember for ever. THANK YOU!

Our visit to the "Great Bear Lodge" in the rainforest Wilderness of Northern British Columbia in Canada was one of the most spectacular of our experiences over 50years of travelling around our beautiful World. This is a very special place and there was not a single thing we could fault about any and every aspect of our visit. Accommodation first class, food and drinks which were inclusive ..plentiful and beautifully prepared and presented. Available at all times if desired and included in the cost. Full days activities with numerous outings to view the Grizzly Bears..which we were fortunate to see each time we went out. The area abounds of other fauna like deer, bald eagles, seals and ducks aplenty, and the scenery in every direction is spectacular. Staff were helpful, knowledgeable, polite and professional at all times. We were very fortunate to have perfect weather during our stay which added to the enjoyment we experienced...including the seaplane transfers to and from Port Hardy which is located on Vancouver Island...a 50 minute flight each way. Our first seaplane experience added to the overall enjoyment of this very special adventure. This is a memory we will never forget thanks to all Great Bear Lodge personnel and of course Mother Nature for this special place on Earth.

How lovely to hear that your visit to Great Bear Lodge was amongst your most spectacular experiences in 50 years of travels! We know what you mean, it is incredibly beautiful out here and we appreciate this wild and rugged place every day. And how lucky you were to have perfect weather. That's certainly not a given out here in the rainforest, and in fact the waterfalls are flowing nicely today after an unusual storm last night that included lightning and thunder. We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed the seaplane flight, accommodation, food and drinks, and the staff. And, of course most importantly, the wildlife. Many thanks, Marg

As most people have said, the views, the excellent and plentiful food, the superb BC wines, hospitality, staff, service are all first class so I do not need to add anymore. My only tips for prospective visitors is to travel light, unlike us!!! You only need to travel to and from the lodge in a pair of good walking shoes/trainers which you can then use on the afternoon walks, whilst in the lodge you wear their Crocs and outside their wellingtons. When you travel out to view the Bears and Wildlife you do so in their Hunters Onesey! and wet gear, one of our group wore shorts which meant it was easier to get the onesey off and on. Perhaps one warm top or fleece but in the lodge it is perfectly warm and comfortable No need to dress up in the evening because you do not get back from viewing until 10pm ish by which time all you want is your bed. We were lucky to see Grizzly Bears and two cubs with their mum but you do need to be patient and used to sitting a boat for a long long time!!

That's a great tip to travel light Peter, thanks so much for sharing that. Over the years we've gotten better at providing all of the gear to keep people warm and dry, which means that our guests don't need to carry it all the way from home. In the early years we used to ask our guests to bring everything, including their own wellingtons, which probably took up a whole suitcase! It is a great suggestion to bring walking shoes/trainers and one warm top, and sometimes people will be happy their brought their own lightweight rain jacket for light showers. We're glad to hear that you had an amazing experience, and were lucky enough to see the two young cubs! Sincerely, Marg

At Great Bear Lodge all its staff and amenities were far above and beyond my expectations. The scenery and peace of this place is amazing. The accommodations were top notch as was the food. I would recommend this adventure to anyone interested in this type of activity. It would have been great even without seeing any bears; but we were lucky enough to see some.

What a lovely thing to say, Demi, that your experience at the lodge was six stars! (Look out, seven star hotels in Dubai, we're hot on your tail). We agree with you, the scenery and the sense of peace out here are truly lovely. Thanks so much for recommending us. Marg
