To the legions of those who loved God's Pocket under Bill and Annie's inspired care: you will find all of it still here. It is under new ownership, but the diving operation, the incredible meals this wilderness kitchen turns out; the comfy rooms and overall management are in the hands of experienced pros who intimately know and love these waters. Dive planning, drops and pickups for my recent visit were to the "T." The sites themselves haven't lost a beat, they are still vying for some of the very best, most colorful, most life-packed reefs the planet has to offer. To those who haven't yet tried the world class diving at God's Pocket's doorstep: It is difficult to imagine a better introduction to reefs beyond the tropics. Here is a link to my initial review of a couple years ago, all of which remains true: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g184839-d1078414-r496678849-God_s_Pocket_Resort-Port_Hardy_Vancouver_Island_British_Columbia.html

DON'T GO! (to God's Pocket) if you are looking for a 5 star hotel and accommodations. DO GO! (to God's Pocket) if you're looking for world class diving and unparalleled natural beauty. Located less than an hour from Port Hardy BC by boat (Port Hardy itself is somewhat remote). God's Pocket Resort is a one of a kind experience catering to the avid and I mean AVID(!) diver. When I first contacted GP, 18 months before our trip, the owner told me " well first off you have to bring your own drysuit.". Water temperatures run from 45F to 50F most of the year and if you get wet it's cold! It took a year and a half just to get in as it's a very popular resort despite the local water temperatures. Diving was superb. Even though our visibility was somewhat limited by seasonal nutrient content of the water you see wide vista's of plumose anemones everywhere. Dispersed throughout the fields of anemones are bright orange (under artificial light) sea cucumbers, brightly colored nudibranchs, basket stars, sea pens, unending clouds of fish, and so much more! Wolf eels and octopus are also abundant! The dive boat is a converted river boat with a shallow draft. It comes complete with an elevator on the stern (a first for me), to gently lift you from the sea at the end of the dive. The actual staging area is open and staffed by an able assistant to help you in equipping yourself for every dive. There is a cabin on the boat large enough for all divers once on the surface to warm up in and warm liquid refreshments were offered after every dive during surface intervals. Tanks and BC's were prepped and filled and remained in assigned positions for the full week. Nitrox was available and filled and checked onboard during the day. Accomodations were simple rooms that were kept exceptionally clean by the staff. Ours looked out over the GP's bay as did most if not all rooms. Think fishing lodge as originally the resort was a fishing lodge. Food was in a word good. Home cooking with family style meals but good! Maybe it was the diving but I always arrived in the dining hall hungry and left satisfied. Final comments: God's Pocket Resort is a well run DIVE resort. It is NOT for beginners (I have been diving for 44 years and this was my first cold ocean experience and was quite a challenge even after taking courses that lead to a semblance of proficiency in a drysuit). You could describe the rooms as Spartan but clean, warm and equipped with the usual necessities. The staff was friendly and accommodating even transporting my wife (non diver) back to Port Hardy in the middle of the week for a pre arranged meeting with my daughter. This was a truly once in a lifetime trip for a Midwest boy but it is my hope that it won't be the last.....ooh, and the sea mammal, I had a friendly sea lion bump into me on one dive. Now you won't have that happen in the Midwest.

God's Pocket is well known for its cold water diving, but there's more to the hidden resort off of Port Hardy. I gave the cold water diving (low vis this week) my best shot but decided I enjoyed the island more. We kayaked into hidden coves, hiked through the forest to another bay, got to observe and photograph gorgeous bald eagles. The humpback whales entertained us on the boat in between dives and we enjoyed watching them in the bay from the deck outside our cabin. Bill & Annie you have a wonderful staff - Oliver, Mitch, Meg, and Rafe. Rafe is a great cook, always in the kitchen chopping and prepping. Rafe and Annie, your recipes made us look forward to every meal. The food was very very good. It was a great trip and you made us feel right at home. Thank you so much!

Absolutely the very best vacation ever! Great place to kayak with a wonderful home base, great food, fantastic staff and fun place to stay. The wildlife is amazing, sea otters, sea lions, and more bald eagles than I have ever seen. On three separate days we saw 20 plus at once. The best was watching them feed as we sat in our kayaks. Amazing!

You sense you are in for a treat as you approach a cluster of whimsically bright blue, purple and lime green cabins nestled in a small bay that will be your home for the week: the unique and enchanting kingdom of God’s Pocket. This handmade resort and the treasures of its surrounding cool water habitat enthrall all the senses but most especially the sense of wonder. With the extra effort and attention that it takes to dive these waters come these rich rewards. Underwater drifts cross meadows of metridium and anemone lips that whisper the sensuous brushes of Georgia O’keefe. Schooling fish awaken a canvas saturated in pink, yellow, white and orange soft corals and sponges against an emerald sea brimming in the goodness of nutrient-rich upwellings. Nature here has stacked Nudis, crabs, shrimp, barnacles, decorated warbonnets, sculpins, Irish Lords, wolf eels, octopus and so many other critters in every nook and cranny of these densely encrusted boulders, coral gardens and kelp forests. Forty-three degrees and not enough time to find them all! How many ways can a crab adorn itself? This is a palette of life that leaves one dreaming in between dives and yearning to return even before the bags are packed for departure. Host Bill and his crew worked ceaselessly and never missed a beat in keeping this 65 y.o. and the rest of her group in fine fettle: informed, comfortable, safe, and able to manage all tasks. In lieu of the dreaded ‘ladder,’ riding the elevator onto the boat was yet another little slice of heaven on earth. Three meals a day, chef Ollie coaxed out of this remote wilderness kitchen, marvelous creations for hungry carnivores and vegetarians alike. In simple but clean cabins, toasty floors and comfy beds capped it all off. This place truly is a one-off experience that deserves to be on any diver’s short list.
