Bab Ourika perches majestically on a hilltop at the apex of the Ourika Valley, guarding the gateway to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains – yet it is only 45 minutes from Marrakech’s International airport. With 360 degree panoramic views, this innovative new hotel receives warm sunlight all day, ending in spectacular sunsets. From its unique eyrie-like position it offers a birds eye view of the Atlas, of traditional Berber villages and of the lush river valley below. The Kasbah is one of the most eco-friendly hotels in Morocco; constructed principally from rammed earth, the traditional Berber building technique, it seems almost to have grown out of the rocks beneath. The thick walls provide such good insulation that air-conditioning is unnecessary. Solar panels provide hot water for the hotel and and the underfloor heating in the dining and bar area. Soon a biodigester will provide electricity and compost not only for the hotel but also for the village below.

We had 8 days in Morocco this Kasbah was our 1 of 3 . It was a great choice. Less than an hour from the airport. you get a magical mountain experience and a glimpse into Berber rural life. We were warmly greeted with with cold towels and seated on a beautiful terrace with mint tea. And the views were beautiful. We had 2 rooms - my son's, a little too close to the restaurant, but both in rustic chic Moroccan style. Our room had outdoor shower! We slept with the windows open - no mosquitoes!!! And enjoyed mountain air and an absence of light pollution. Sublime. The restaurant was good some Moroccan/Berber/fusion dishes - the vegetables from the garden. Afternoon mint tea and cake was a nice touch. We enjoyed a 3hr trek through the pine forest/salt farm - it was a good pace and our guide was knowledgable. Why not a full 5 * ? My son took his binoculars as we'd been advised that outside our suite was the best place to see the night sky. It was, but unlike many roof areas in Morocco there was no provision to sit/relax - only stand!. A cushion arrangement would've made all the difference. Secondly I regret taking the camel trek. The camels weren't in good shape & were terrified of their handler. He beat them hard across the legs many times. Not pleasant (especially compared to the camels in Essaourira) We were also subjected to a well timed vendor on the way. This reflects badly on Kasbah Bab Ourika. Don't do this trip. Overall, a great place to put in your itinerary.

There is nowhere in Morocco quite like Kasbah Bab Ourika - I could wax lyrical about the views, the landscape, the architecture, the service, the food, the sense of enchantment and the authenticity underpinning them - but it's more than all that - it's got that intangible magic that elevates a great hotel into something between a private club and the second home you never knew you had. Eschewing the laboured pretensions of other mountain retreats, it is a place fundamentally at ease with itself. All those 'luxuries' are there and more - but worn lightly, creating a verdant oasis that speaks to the soul too, Owned by a wonderfully eccentric and delightfully hospitable Englishman who has lived in Morocco for almost 20 years, the Kasbah intrinsically feels like a country house weekend amongst friends. Amidst the meandering gardens, pools, shady corners and sensory indulgence is an authenticity neither money nor corporate power can buy - and that is its true magic. It's luxury that doesn't need to prove itself but makes you instantly at home and as we chatted with the staff, we realised that the Kasbah wasn't just a high end anomaly in a remote rural community, but key to its development, providing employment, infrastructure and investment at a grass roots level During our stay - we noticed that a couple of Marrakech's most celebrated artists staying there to escape the bright lights - I only mention it because it's so unusual and because it speaks to the Kasbah's inherent class and its role in Marrakech's bohemian story. And beyond that - guests would end up friends with other guests in a way I've rarely seen - no awkwardness or enforced jollility - just a lovely series of little moments you'd never experience elsewhere We loved it - the morning swims, the private balcony, the refined, terroir menus, the hospitality and the intimacy. It's a must. It's a window into the soul of Morocco - and I can't wait to go back

We stayed there with a family of 4. The location is just fabulous, painted on top of a hill overlooking the Ourika Valley with the high Atlas in the back. We booked the Panoramic Suite with Private pool, gorgous, cosy infinity pool, great view over the Atlas. Very friendly service, great food ... this place it totally relaxing and zen. They also have great guides to help you discover the Atlas.

Spent 3 nights here, absolutely beautiful setting and ambiance within the terrace restaurant. Lovely comfortable rooms, however lots of bugs at breakfast which slightly proved to problem. Food is very traditional but very nice. Perfect spots for pre- dinner drinks enjoying the view over the valley, and brilliant welcoming attentive staff Only minor improvement would be higher quality food and bee control

We really enjoyed our stay at the Kasbah Bab Ourika. The staff were friendly and very helpful. They helped to organise my partners birthday and they really put an effort into making it a special evening. Thanks Damian and Mohammed (the chef ). The lamb tagine was delicious and the birthday cake was a nice touch. The Atlas mountain views were just breathtaking and our Garden room with a personal swimming pool was simply beautiful. I will definitely come back some time and this time will check out the paramount room. Thanks to you and your team.
