It is perhaps not clear if the painstakingly restored colonial style Hotel Ordono is experiencing an optimal level of room occupancy, however the bar and dining room offer a very valuable asset to travellers staying in Gibara. As a non-hotel guest, on a recent visit to the town, I was very surprisingly pleased by the services offered in restaurant. Somebody is making a very serious effort, as the staff in evidence were very courteous, the bar had beer and cocktails, the music in the dining room was classic and played at a low volume (rare in Cuba, where all music is generally blasted), the dishes served, including fish, were very nicely prepared, (by international standards) and the prices very reasonable. A surprise hit !

The new name is Hotel Ordoño. It was home base for my group this month, and very comfortable. It is located close to the Malecon. Helpful and very friendly staff, clean comfy rooms, a great bar and an excellent restaurant. The best Langusta we had anywhere on this trip.
We stayed on 2nd Floor. Outer facing rooms preferred. There is a rooftop bar but it was closed at this time. WiFi is sometimes spotty... but was usable as if often the case in Oriente!
You will not get the real Cuban family Casa experience here, but the clean luxury of Ordoño is well worth it for those who love hotels.

Came in for breakfast at 8:30 am, this waiter told us to wait even though tables were all full. Waited for 1 hour for people to leave and suddenly they told us to leave cause they had been informed to close due to full capacity of the restaurant. That’s all the explanations they gave and we left with no breakfast. Not coming back!

I participated in the celebration for the Hotel's 11th anniversary and I loved the attention provided. The food and the view that the hotel has from its terrace are very exquisite. Magnificent rooms and beautiful city with beautiful views of the sea. Excellent choice to enjoy with the family

Once outside of the Holguin airport, it was off to Gibara, a place that I had not been to in about 2 years. I heard that they had a new hotel there. Entering the bay area of Gibara just before the town, the refreshing breeze off the water hits you. There always seemed to be a breeze wherever we were in Gibara and at any time of the day.
We pulled up to the hotel just off the main road in town. The hotel looked quite handsome from the outside and once in the lobby, it did not disappoint either. We registered and were shown up to our room on the second floor. The room was spacious enough and looking in brand new shape. Everything worked nicely. The fridge, the TV, the AC, the hot water, and yes even the hairdryer!
After a walk around the neighborhood, we had supper at the hotel restaurant and it was just like another guest staying there said it would be. The meal was excellent and the restaurant room was bonita. There was an included breakfast also, until 10 am or so.
That evening there were a couple of girls offering a small piano/guitar show for the patrons. There is a small lobby bar that seats about 6 and also comfortable lobby chairs to relax in while having a refresco.
The next day a maid was gracious enough to show us around to some other rooms on the third floor that had 12 ft. ceilings. Not all the rooms were finished and ready for guests apparently. The suite room we were shown was quite appealing. There is a rooftop terrace that could seat quite a few people and had good view of around the town but no bar was set up there as of yet. It will be great spot for a drink when they are up and running.
I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this new and only hotel in Gibara. The staff were great, the room was quite adequate and the restaurant food was delectable. It would be great if it were on the waterfront but you can't have it all, I guess. At 82 CUC per night per couple, it was a great value. A similar styled hotel in Havana would be twice the price, I imagine.
This hotel sticks out of the skyline somewhat wherever you are in Gibara and kind of seems out of place in this town of casas and fisherman but it adds a new significant option to spending the night in Gibara for people who like this sort of boutique hotel, that was at one time somebody's mansion. There are a couple of banks conveniently around within a 1 minute walk and a few shops around to buy drinks if you decide not to use the mini-bar option in the room.
I/we loved it and will definitely stay there again.

Lonely Planet does not exaggerate as it calls this one of the best hotels in Cuba. Absolutely stunning rooms and a rooftop terrace with sublime views of the sea and the lovely town of Gibara and strange shaped hills in the distance. A wonderful sunset can be witnessed here. Gibara was truly a lovely quaint wind swept seaside town. It was the most tranquil cities we had been to in Cuba with sleepy streets, beautiful colonial homes and great food! A wonderful place for people who want to get away from it all. Several excursions nearby are possible. Inquire at hotel where the staff is formidably impressive and friendly with superb English.
We came here especially to dive in the nearby caves which are still quiet obscure after we read about them on an article in The Guardian on Gibara, Cubas best-kept secret. We were picked up by Arturo Blanco (the head of the cuban diving association) and we travelled a short distance to a beach village called Calatones, where a few horses carried the scuba tanks and equipment to a cave 30mins walk through a strange acrid landscape. We finally arrived at a tiny swimming hole and were quickly assured that it was safely lined and marked and had beautiful galleries inside. It was hard to see this from the small 15x15ft hole where the water seemed murky. But as soon as we descended, the visibility cleared up completely and this became one of the most beautiful experiences we have ever had! The stalactites and stagmatites are astonishingly huge and the cave is deemed to be 20 million years old. There was a beautiful illusion when the salt water met the sweet water. The green light entering the cave was like a dreamlike illusion which give it its name: THE GREEN HOLE. Arturo was absolutely fantastic and safe as a dive master. This was indeed our highlight of the trip in cuba. We have also dived in caves in Mexico, but this was very different and again the setting was incredible. Make sure you eat lunch with Arturo at the end of the dives at a local paladar in Calatones! It was our best meal in Cuba with a spread of Marlin, Turtle (which are not endangered in Cuba so probably the best place to try), Crab, Octopus, Pork etc. Book this trip through the hotel or directly with Arturo at acave@nauta.cu or +5352915251. He provided all equipment including wetsuit. There are 4 caverns and many more caves to dive around the area.
If you are not a diver there are some impressive landlocked caves. Ask at hotel and make sure Jose, Cuba's foremost cave explorer takes you there.
Would love to visit again during Gibara's film Festival when the town comes alive with art and music.

We visited this hotel for an overnight stay as part of an excursion. We arrive in the harbour after a catamaran trip from Guardalavaca and walked through one of the town squares past many tired looking buildings that had obviously seen better days. As we turned the corner Hotel Ordono rose before us as if it had been trapped in time to preserve it's glory. The experience of a bygone age did not stop there. As we were invited into the hotel the entire staff were there to greet us, a mariachi band playing in the reception area. We were all given a cold fruit punch drink and a cold wet flannel to cool us down. Both very welcome as it was in the mid 30's outside. The hotel had been totally renovated and had only been open for 10 months. The place was magnificent, pillars and candelabras everywhere. The rooms were set on galleried landings and furnished to reflect the high quality of of the rest of the hotel. One of the couples in our party had had their wedding the day before at the hotel in playa pesquero and we had informed our guide of this. The guide had a quiet word with the hotel manager and the couple were immediately upgraded to the honeymoon suite. They invited us to have a quick look around the suite. We were impressed with our own room but the honeymoon suite was almost palatial, they took loads of pictures to show their families. The mariachi band had moved from the reception area and had relocated themselves to the roof terrace where we joined a few of the guests for pre dinner drinks. The views from the roof terrace were really good and there was also an higher tower accessible by a spiral staircasethat provided an amazing view of the surrounding area and a sunset from your best postcard. I did not notice an elevator so I cannot comment on access for the disable other than no chance of getting up to the top of the tower. Everything was in perfect working order as other reviewers have stated. I cannot really comment on the food as I was too distracted by the hotels contrast to its surroundings that I would have eaten anything placed in front of me. The staff were the same as the majority Cuban hotel personnel, always smiling, pleasant and helpful to the extreme. Thank you to all involved in making our overnight stay such a memorable experience.
