Hotel Riu Ocho Rios is commended for its friendly service, with staff going the extra mile to ensure guest satisfaction, although some guests have encountered slow check-ins. The amenities, including diverse food and entertainment options, are generally well-received, as is the hotel's location, perfect for excursions. However, room experiences vary, with some maintenance issues cited.
While the atmosphere is lively, opinions on music and decor are split. The overall value is criticized, with guests expecting more for their money despite the hotel's cleanliness and well-kept premises.

The Hotel was a refurbished a few years ago and the new look is fantastic. Great sea views all around, plenty of pools to relax by, spacious beach, fantastic entertainment for all the family, new water park for the young at heart, activities for all ages, bars, restaurants parties, I can go on for a long time. The staff are brilliant, rooms cleaned every day and mini bars refilled every 3 days or less if needed. Excursions can be arranged onsite, plenty of taxis always available but cheaper to use local services if you’re familiar with Jamaica as whole. Transactions are accepted in USD,JMD more than any other currency. Plenty of places to exchange money and at reception of the hotel. Travel representatives are onsite most days (esp Mon- Fri) for any additional services. A safe environment for young children, plenty of disabled access to all facilities and extra assistance provided upon request for those who need it. My last trip had 52 people in the group. Youngest aged 1, oldest 66 years old. Some were mobility impaired but all had a happy experience and did not miss out on any activities. Family, friends and partners. Every family trip gets bigger as more people want to join in as we always come home knowing it was worth the trip. Previous holiday had 32 people. We all want to go back! Next holiday already being planned. Great overall for families, couples, weddings, girls/ lad’s holiday but best of all a great location to relax, enjoy Jamaica, the people, culture, music, food, parties and maybe you might also spot a celebrity like we did!!

We are recently back from a two week stay at this hotel.
The first thing i would like to point out is that some of the negative reviews on here appear to be incorrect and unjustified.
As a brit, i wouldn't normally tip unless the service is outstanding. We never felt pressured into tipping, and it was at our discretion. We never tipped for drinks and tipped only once in the buffet restaurant due to our table size. If you want to tip cool, if you don't, that's also cool. You still get the same level of service with or without a tip. We would at times tip at the restaurants because the service was good and attentive..
The hotel complex is huge with its own stretch of beautiful beach, which has an abundance of deck chairs and at least one beach bar. The beach has a number of bored life guards, and the water isn't deep. You are able to stand up at all times. The beach is also good for running on with a lap from the water sports area to just past the blue bamboo around 0.5km. The gym is small for the size of the hotel, and the two treadmills are annoyingly taken up by people walking. Why they can't walk around the resort or the beach and leave the treadmills for the runners? i don't know probably a unfair assessment. The gyms made up of some weights, a machine or two and medicine balls. We skipped the gym being unable to get on a treadmill. We opted for circuits and runs outside. There's a fairly long path next to the gym perfect for incline runs or power walks.
The airport transfer was up to 1.5-2hrs. It would be worth looking at club mobay and private transfers to speed this process up. TUI premium isn't in effect when you get to Jamaica. It's a separate system called club mobay..
The pools have been split into two sections.. The two infinity pools, one of which is a swim up bar, are on the far left of the resort, and this is the more relaxed side. Not as many children, stringent rules for the pools, etc. Although extremely loud parties did ruin the peace and quiet on two occasions, it can't be helped, of course, and we simply moved away from them. The other section is on the right of the resort and is made up of two more pools, but here you find daily entertainment, and it's a lot busier. The pools are always found to be clean and tidy, perhaps from sand that's being brought in. The swim up bars are great, quick service, full menu and nice staff, some make an effort some don't.
The grounds are kept extremely well. An army of staff work tirelessly to keep the place so clean and tidy. It's a shame that lazy guests can't be bothered to clean up after themselves.
You have a choice of a number of restaurants. Breakfast is usually taken at the main buffet St Anne's, but it feels as busy as the airport. So for a more relaxed service, go to the Italian restaurant. It's quiet, you can have a sea view, and it's not jammed packed. Sometimes, the food isn't as fresh here, but that's being picky. There's a crazy amount of choice just for breakfast, fresh fruit like you've never seen, cooked breakfast, pastries, salads, fish, pancakes, and an omelette station.
Lunch again is normally taken at St Anne's, and it can be busy. The food choices on offer are just out of this world and too many to list. The other option is Pepe's grill. Here, you can get your jerk chicken and burgers. It's worth the wait as sometimes you may have to que as the chicken cooks.
For dinner, the resort offers a number of specialty restaurants.. As you can imagine, the main buffet is hectic and nowhere near the peace and quiet you probably want.
First up is the Italian, we ate here a lot. Your starters and dessert are from the restaurants buffet selection, and your mains are served. Huge fillet steaks, salmon, and sea food linguine all wait you here. The fillet steaks are beautiful. The restaurant has a nice ambiance about it, rarely busy and perfect for date nights or a relaxing meal. Staff are tentative but appear to be trying to rush you when you just want to take your time.
Asian restaurant is a full buffet centred around Chinese food and Indian food, all very good..
Steakhouse can be a bit warm as there's no aircon. Its full service, limited starters, i had a rip eye that looks amazing, but then i realised it was mostly fat, and i also had a burger another night. Not bad. It's worth at least a visit.
Gourmet restaurant we tried once, all very good, lovely atmosphere inside. The service is a bit slower, allowing for conversation and a relaxed dining experience. We probably would have gone more, but we just ran out of time. It's definitely one of the better restaurants.
For 24 hours, you have the sports bar with two pool tables and snacks on the go 24/7. Here, you'll find burgers, sandwiches, crisps, pizza, pastries from breakfast, and whatever left overs they can find.
Our room had limited sea view and overlooked the centre, which was made up of trees, a pond, plants etc. All very nice. Room had an easy to use coffee machine that makes better coffee than what's available at the bars. The room had a balcony, which annoyingly was unlit, so after dark, i couldn't sit out and read. It's perfect for during the day. The room has a complete mini bar, rum, whisky, vodka, and gin. With a number of mixers available and ice from the ice machine located on your floor. There's red stripe and another light beer available, which, as a non spirit drinker, this was heaven. There weren't as many sockets as i would have liked, but we managed. We had a huge walk-in shower, and a decent hairdryer is available. Along with an iron and iron board. There's a safe in the room which is located in the huge wardrobe, there isn't a shortage of storage that's for sure.
Room service comes in daily, and contrary to popular belief, they will clean your room without the expectation of a tip..all a tip gets you is crazy towel features on the bed. They did sterling work each day, though, and did receive a tip. The Rui app allows you to order stuff you might be missing, towels, mini bar stuff, etc. I made a number of orders, and they were completed in no time. The apps is excellent. You also book your restaurants through the app.
The hotel also has a pretty good water park. A small park for the kids and a larger part with a number of slides for the older ones and adults. It was great fun and definitely worth checking out.
Whilst there, my brother was married. The wedding planner sorted the wedding, and we were treated to such a lovely service on the beach. Rum punch was provided, and later a meal in a private dining room in the evening.
The entertainment is available throughout the day and night, but it wasn't to our taste, so we skipped it. The water sports are available but again, we skipped these. We wish we had taken the pedal boats out but for one reason or another, we never did. You can snorkel, and it's well recommended near to the reef the sea view is outstanding, i can only describe it as being in a giant tropical fish tank. Take some bread down to feed them. You can hire the snorkel kit for a deposit at the water sports area.
If you are researching your upcoming holiday. You may have heard about "rocky" who does a lot of the trips from this hotel. He's a rip-off merchant, walk up the road at the hotel, there's a taxi rank on there go and speak to the independent drivers, they are a lot cheaper then 'rocky'.
Bamboo bar next door to the hotel has a small gift shop and an ATM. The hotel shop is overpriced, sorry to say RUI. There's also a service station 0.5km from the hotel. It's walkable without a guide, but just keep your wits about you.
Overall amazing experience at the Rui.

This was our first visit to the Riu Ocho Rios. We travelled as a group of 19 for a family Wedding which was originally booked for the Riu Negril, but was told that was going to be closed for renovations during the dates we booked and was the supposedly upgraded to the Ocho Rios. We have been to the Riu Negril on 3 previous occasions and despite what TUI told us the Ocho Rios, in our opinion is no upgrade. However, in saying that the Ocho Rios is a lovely hotel and the location on the beach is absolutely stunning. The beach is not the biggest that we have come across in Jamaica but it is fantastically beautiful and really well maintained. The clear blue waters and soft sand are just what you think of when heading to the Caribbean and we found the sea to be so calm during our 14 day stay. Just a few steps away and you have the choice of 4 pools. These are also well maintained with life guards always in attendance. You have the 3 quieter pools and then 1 party pool where the entertainment all kicks off during the day. Two of the pools have pool bars which can get a big lively late in the day. There is one pool for adults only but in truth that was generally quiet most of the time. A big plus to this hotel is the Splash water park. One area is for the bigger fun seekers with big slides and the other is a small area for the little ones but both are a great to spend a day at.
The entertainment team are always busy and really do a great job whether at the pool during the day or at the bingo or into the evening where it can be quizzes, karaoke or fun games on the stage. There is the on site reggae band which is usually in flow mid evening.
The rooms here are basic, and not conducive for a 5 star rating. Don’t get your hopes up for high standards but in truth you are in the Caribbean- why do you want to be in a room - ok, only to sleep!!
The main restaurant is ok, it gets very busy and take note that at the Weekends this hotel gets very busy and the restaurants are overcrowded and getting tables is not easy. The food is fine, plenty of choice although we did find that it is quite repetitive and this is whether it is breakfast, lunch or evening dinner. The service is ok and waitresses work hard but one let down here is the fact that they do not like you getting your own drinks and at times it-can take ages to get what you want to drink- my advice here is to order 2 or 3 of what you want in one go. We also dined at the Steakhouse- this is definitely worth a try as the food is great. Everything that you want to book or do is through the Riu App which we found easy to use and quite informative. A few things let this hotel down, one is the constant power outages- although power tends to come back quickly it is frustrating and annoying especially I. The evenings when you are literally plunged into darkness. Some of the staff here could do with a short lesson of customer relations, just a smile goes a long way at times. The rooms could do with a refresh in places, ours was a little musty in smell and the lower rooms seemed a bit damp.
Overall this is a decent hotel but it’s the beach, sand and sea that make it well worth visiting.

This place was great. Fast check-in friendly staff. Decent food. Clean rooms. I am guessing everyone has different experiences but ours was wonderful.
Ride to resort is long (2hrs) but goes by fast along the coastline. Our check-in was 20 mins we did take our own bags to the room which was not terrible. Good ramps everywhere so quite accessible however we did do approximately 15000 steps each day at this resort so be prepared for a ton of walking.
Breakfast was great. Lots of options everyday at buffet as was lunch. Dinner much the same. Different fish options and different seafood choices which changed often along with a main carving plate that had decent meat. Their ribeye steak is overcooked and very thin but I ate it every day anyway. Their chicken tastes like KFC and was so good. Pepes jerk grill was my fav ate half a chicken everyday for pre lunch then hit buffet after. At Pepes they also had beef burgers 2 days which where great but then switch to chicken burgers that where not so great. However you could still get beef burgers in buffet. Sports bar had food 24hrs but gross sandwiches small snacks and sometimes good chicken strips.
Beach was good but found the sand rough. West half of resort away from volleyball and aquatic centre sand was soft and no rocks in water this is also where the better snorkeling was. We saw tons of fish just past the rope line.
Rooms where nice cleaned everyday and fridge and mini bar stocked back up every 2 days. If you needed anything use the app request and it was done. The app is where the dinner reservations were made so it was a bit of a fuss trying to organize with 13 people to sit together as every room has to book separately then request to sit with other rooms.
Entertainment was ok some shows were really good and other were meh at night. During the day entertainment was around doing activities but never what I was looking to do which was play beach volleyball that was scheduled almost everyday at 1030. Only one day did someone come and ask if anyone wanted to play then left saying they would find more players and never returned. Was all good as others just took to the court and we made our own game.
All in all we had a wonderful trip and would highly recommend this resort for all to travel too. Remember you get what you pay for and this definitely a budget friendly spot.

We stayed the first week of January 2025 for my husbands birthday, the resort was beautiful, the beach is clean and amazing. The staff was very friendly and attentive, the room was cleaned daily and the in room bar was restocked every other day. My only complaint was the food. The Buffet had good variety, but mostly everything was missing salt and seasoning, the best thing I had at the buffet was the curry goat. The steak house was good, even though the steaks were very thin, the steak knives were also very dull. I had to rip my steak with my fingers because the knives were like butter knives. The restaurant called Mandalay was extremely disappointing. It was supposed to be Asian inspired, but was missing all the Asian seasonings, everything tasted bland or like ketchup, there was no garlic or ginger or soy sauce, everything that was supposed to make the food Asian inspired was missing. The food had absolutely no salt or seasoning. It tasted as if someone was learning to cook for the first time and it was an experiment. The Jerk Hut called Pepe's, had chicken that tasted like roasted chicken, the chicken had no jerk seasoning at all, they didn't even have the option of adding spice to the roasted chicken, the sauces on the side was a bland dark sauce or a red sauce that tasted like ketchup, the jerk hut was not good. The Italian restaurant had ok food. It wasn't good, it was just ok. We ended up walking next door to a restaurant on the beach called Bamboo Blu, the food there was great. My husband is a great chef so I know a lot about food and seasoning. Overall, RIU Ocho Rios is a beautiful property and we had a great time, the only thing lacking was the food. We would return if the food gets better or if they offer a non all inclusive option.

I don't normally write reviews but this place is worth telling people about. We are 2 adults 1 child. Lots to do for kids . Water slides for older kids and adults and a smaller water park for younger kids. Food was amazing every day. We are vegan and had plenty to eat all the time and very delicious. Even at the Italian restaurant the chef made a special dish for us that was amazing!! We brought our own non diary milk as we love cappuccino every morning we were pleasantly surprised this hotel offers soy milk and oatmilk. They offer yoga class every morning All the drinks at the bars very good so many options . Even fruit smoothies so good We did dunns river falls excursion highly recommend that one where you climb to the top of the falls and travel by catamaran. Also did yaaman atv/buggy excursion and ziplining. I felt very safe which was very important to me. But also want to add they were very disorganized at this place and caused alot of wasting time sitting around. They need to learn better communication between their staff. But adventures were fun Only downfall we had was our maid service was never done in the mornings ...so when we returned to our room at 330/4 to relax, nap, prepare for dinner time our room wasn't cleaned yet and we no longer wanted the intrusion at that late time of day so went several days without maid service. One of the times , I left a tip on the bed (for the maid) and when we got back the tip was gone but room had not been serviced. I assumed the guy who stock the fridge took it? But after that I was reluctant to leave a tip for the maid. I eventually had to leave my overflowing garbage pail out side my door as I feared it would attract bugs. Fresh towels were however left for us at our door one day. There were power outages every morning that woke us as they flickered on n off repeatedly. Always during the hour of 5-6am. Which is fine I guess we enjoyed sering the sun nice n early. Only that took a while for wifi to come back in our room after that. Wifi was great all around the resort Even the Beach. A/C always worked amazing in the room and restaurants Overall , riu is a hotel chain I feel I can trust to not be disappointed I highly recommend this resort and my family and I had an amazing time and we would return.

We recently stayed at Rui Ocho RÃo in January during its busy season, and overall, it was a good experience despite the crowd. The check-in process was quick, but unfortunately, this time, we didn't get any perks from the Riu Class loyalty scheme. Bringing it up to the receptionist led to a bit of an awkward moment. The food choices were excellent, with plenty of options at the buffet. Booking a table at the a la carte restaurants had reasonably good availability, but it was a bit disappointing that tropical fruits like papaya and mango were missing. Special kudos to Manager Adrian for going out of his way to accommodate minor requests tied to my partner's dietary needs, making our experience even better. Also, Fitzroy, our waiter, was outstanding, always bringing a smile to our faces with his humor and his signature catchphrase, "no joke, just like that." The beach was stunning, with calm waters and a beautiful sandy area, always with enough sunbeds. The hotel made sure to clean the beach every night, and we really enjoyed the fresh coconut service. The rooms were clean and spacious, with a lovely bathroom. However, we faced issues with a malfunctioning safe and phone, requiring multiple trips to reception. It all was fixed within few hours but as they kept sending the wrong person to the room, which I tipped anyway, I ended up $15 out of pocket. I reached out to Riu via social media, but I'm unsure if they have responded. The water slide park, similar to other Riu spots, was a nice addition, open from 10 am to 5 pm. The entertainment overall was enjoyable, with a very talented team showcasing various skills and conducting amazing shows. In summary, despite a few hiccups, our stay was positive and enjoyable. We sincerely recommend considering Rui Ocho RÃo for your next stay.

Hotel Riu Ocho Rios was a budget friendly option for our group of 16 (8 adults and 8 children, 11-13 years old). While there was nothing too terribly wrong with our vacation, there was nothing really great either. We made the most of it.
The beach and ocean are great. The location is fantastic, with snorkeling right off of shore, very little seaweed, and no sargassum. The resort is very large and feels huge. There is nothing personal about this resort.
The staff was marginally friendly, some were actually pretty rude, no one really stood out. The food, while plenty of options were available, was of a lower quality then other all inclusive resorts we have been to. The ala carte restaurants need improvement and more options. It seemed as if the majority of guests preferred the buffet, however our group likes a sit down dinner. 5 out of the 16 of us experienced tummy troubles. Not sure if it was a result of food handling issues or over indulgence. There are a lot of people at the buffets at all times, so lots of germs everywhere. Be cautious.
The entertainment during the day and night was fine, there was always something going on somewhere. Our tweens were pretty bored in the evenings as the teen club did not offer much entertainment. By the 2nd or 3rd day they no longer utilized the Teen Club at night and made their own fun.
The hotel and guest rooms were always very clean, especially given the shear number of guests, whom can be very messy. The room, while comfortable, was average at best. We stayed in a two bedroom family suite. While it was nice to have a private bedroom away from our children, the design of the room was really horrible. The kids' beds were in the large room with the balcony, mini refrigerator, alcohol bottles, and door to the exterior, while the parent room was off of that space with a view of a concrete wall. A view from the parent room would have been more appropriate. Not to mention these rooms are located all the way at the back of the resort near the water park. So a hike to the restaurants, pools, and beach.
The overall experience was just average and we will likely not be returning to this resort.

This is a nice hotel. Nice beach, warm ocean ,great snorkelling. Rooms comfortable and clean. Bar fridge full. Came every other day. We left tip in fridge $1 under Coke Zero and $1 under the bigger beer cans & they stocked it well. I found all the staff to be pleasant and shout out Tiatania in buffet always smiling and remembers your name. Also Delray and Jahnico in Al la cartes hope I spelled the names right. The A la cartes food really good! The buffet was pretty good but repetitive not always hot . Lots to chose from good variety, The jerk chicken was delicious at the Pepe’s. The entertainment staff top notch here excellent! Lots of activity to do.

We stayed here for 14 nights having stayed here in 2017. The hotel has since being renovated and I was impressed by how clean and modern it looked.
One thing I noticed was that all day every day I saw staff working at the hotel and maintaining it. Whether that was cleaning, painting or cutting grass etc. It is continually maintained.
The food was not bad in the buffet restaurant, there is enough of a selection every day to choose from. Yes it is repetitive but that’s to be expected in a hotel of this size. I enjoyed the food in St Anne’s.
We tried the gourmet restaurant and the service was really good but the food was not great at all. The soup was ok and so was my lobster dish but I just wasn’t blown away by it. The dessert I had was supposed to be mousse but it had so much gelatine in it that it was too firm! It also had a horrible taste to it. My partner’s prawn starter was cold. If you are claiming to be a gourmet restaurant then the food needs to be on point.
The food at Pepes for lunch is nice and fresh.
The beach is beautiful.
I feel sorry for the cats on the resort. I don’t know if they are fed often but I hope they are.
Our rooms were cleaned to a good standard. Staff were friendly and service in the restaurants was great. They work so hard so please tip them!
The entertainment was really good. We were really impressed with some of the shows and the parties especially the Jamaican dance show and the live band. The MJ show was great too. In fact all shows were great and we really enjoyed the interactive Kahoot! Games before the shows.
Lastly, when we checked out we were able to continue using the hotel until we had to leave. We decided to stay by the pool for the day and eat lunch and then they have designated shower rooms for people to use when they are leaving and don’t have a room. I thought this was such a great touch!
This is by far the best Riu I’ve stayed at

There is no clamato. Only what used to be Canadian-owned Resorts (Royaltons) had it, and even then, it was hard to get. There is no champagne either. To make mimosas, they make them with white vine if you ask. No real top-shelf liquor, all lower lever brands but still acceptable, Smirnoff, Red label, Gold Rum and Gordons Gin as examples. Only Red Stripe and when they run out of that it's Presidente Beer and Lite beer from the Dominican Republic, hope this helps.
We enjoyed the Italian restaurant in building 5, on the bottom floor. There are five or six items on the menu and a small buffet-type salad bar with lots of good stuff. It was very nice. TIP: If you can't get a reservation, go around 7 with a 5-dollar bill in your hand and ask if they have any cancellations. It doesn't hurt to try.
Absolutely it would be a problem. They take copies of passports and will charge you extra for another room accordingly. Maybe call the Riu call centre and see if you get one. Get everything in writing
