My husband and I just returned from a trip to the Broken Islands staying at the Sechart Lodge for two nights. (on the 2 night package deal) We elected to board the ferry at Port Alberni. The ferry ride on the Frances Barkley takes 3 1/2 hours thru outstanding scenery. We enjoyed the lodge and surroundings especially the hot tub overlooking the ocean! The meals were excellent kudo’s to the very friendly cooks. The problem occurs upon checkout at 10 am depending on where you left your car; If your your car is parked in Ucluelet you would take the 11 AM ferry (1 1/2 hr) pick up your car and drive home. No Problem. If you parked your car in Port Alberni you have two choices: Take the 11 am ferry to Ucluelet (1 1/2 hour ride), wait there for one hour then back to the lodge (1 /12 hour ride) before returning to Port Alberni. (Total 6 1/2 hours on the ferry) Stay in their day area for six hours and wait for the ferry from Ucluelet to return at 3:30 - 4 PM going to Port Alberni. (Total of 3 1/2 hours on the ferry) The problem comes in when you are herded over to their day area at precisely 10 AM to await your choice of ferry arrangements. This day area works well for kayakers coming and going renting kayaks. It is very basic with a few chairs, toilets and showers and a TV that is only available for staff to use. This area is roped off from the lodge and after check out you are not allowed to go over to the lodge with signs posted accordingly. It’s fair that once you have checked out you don’t enter the lodge but ridiculous that checked out guests can not enter the grounds, sit on the lawn chairs or walk around there for 6 hours. The managers argument is that this area would be too crowded if new guests arrive and they need to mow the lawn. We did not see this occurring as when the ferry arrives new guests arrive and checked out guests leave. The manager here is a crude and rude man. This practice for the checked out guests is unacceptable and very disrespectful to guests who are captive there awaiting the ferry.

Great place to stay if your are wanting lodge comfort while exploring the Broken Island's in BC. Good lodge rooms and great food. Time focused approach of the managers, means dinner is at 6pm. Towel are provided for shower, hot tub but you will need your own towel if you shower after your last kayak because they will not allow you to have a lodge towel in the day house before your departure. This OC is worth tolerating for the many good things at this lodge. We had a ocean side room. It had 2 single beds and a sink. The washrooms and showers are down the hall. The dining room is simple and functional. The drying room was great for overnight kayak equipment management. We left our kayaks on dock or beach overnight. We saw bears most days. We came in on Lady Rose Marine Services freighter to and from Port Alberni. This is a long trip but very pleasant for us. We brought our own kayaks but you can rent kayaks at the lodge. We did day trips of 8 hrs per day of kayaking with plastic bag lunch provided by the lodge on routine request. We had good weather aside from some am fog. The kayaking here is spectacular. The lodge made this adventure exploration very comfortable. We used the hot tub each evening. You will not enjoy the price, but it was worth it for us.

Enjoy a day of kayaking in the Broken Islands to come home to this welcoming Lodge with hot tub, wholesome home cooked meals and black bears in the back garden. Spend the evening by the campfire singing, or playing board games with fellow travelers

This was a great place to use as a home base as we kayaked the Broken Island Group. After a day of paddling it was nice to come back, shower and enjoy a homemade meal. All of the staff were friendly and helpful; the music was an added treat on two of the evenings. We even got to enjoy the resident bears! Such a peaceful place to shut out the rest of the world :)

This is a great location for paddling in the Broken Group Islands. It is also great to come back from a long paddle and have a hot shower, access to a hot tub, drinks and a hot meal prepared by someone else. And a bed to boot! The staff are very helpful and friendly. For those who are not campers, I highly recommend Sechart.
