The Latch Inn, on Harbour Road in Sidney, is steeped in history and a glamourous past. In 1925, the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, Walter C. Nichol, commissioned famous architect Samuel Maclure to build him a summer home on a piece of forested property on the Saanich peninsula. The residence, completed in 1926 and coined ‘Miraloma', was a brilliant confluence of the environment and artistic design. Even today, it oozes an old-world elegance and charm. Once the playground for the upper crust, it hosted sumptuous garden parties and welcomed visits from dignitaries and royalty. Edward, the Prince of Wales, and his brother George enjoyed the classy and comfortable accommodation in a state tour of British Columbia in 1927. In the 1940s, it became known as ‘The Latch', reflecting the fact that every door in the house is opened with a latch and iron key.

We had a wonderful stay at the Latch Inn. My best words to describe it are cozy, friendly, warm, classy, and special as you get that rustic charm of the 1920's style, and the feel of a warm wood cabin with candlelight and a warm fireplace in the main public room, and soft fur blankets and pillows on all chairs/couches so you can have a glass of wine in a place that is so relaxing with quiet music in the background.
The hosts Michael, Dominic and David were just fantastic! These gentlemen are so friendly and all introduce themselves to each guest and make you feel like you're welcomed in like family, they spend time with each guest at breakfast giving advice and thorough recommendations on all the good eating places, hikes, parks, beaches, etc. and even stores in Victoria and other nearby towns. You feel so comfortable there, and there are only a few rooms in the Latch so they are able to put full focus on the few guests there are, yet you have privacy enough to feel like you're at a beautiful getaway!
The breakfasts are just breathless, I don't want to ruin the surprise but everything is perfect, from the little plate of preserves on your table set out with 2 small serving spoons, to the delicious breakfast muffins, eggs cooked beautifully and fruit that looks like it's from a gourmet restaurant. I felt like a queen. I can't believe these 3 owners do this all on their own, including the cooking!
The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star was because I love having a balcony and there are minimal rooms with a balcony, but they have the intention on adding more which is great. Also there is not a lot close by to walk to, it's a very short drive to the town though and they give you so much info on things to do so we ended up spending the whole day out :) There is a marina we walked to which is right beside the hotel and we could walk on the pier and see the boats and surrounding islands. I also found the tv in the room could have been bigger, but it's mostly because the room is so large and the tv is on the side of the room away from the bed.
The hotel was very covid-friendly. All hosts wore masks at all times, and also offered free masks to guests, and had a table with sanitizer and anything needed.
There was a nice small fridge in the room which was handy, and everything was very clean and neat - the bedding was wonderful, soft blankets and comfy bed. All in all we had a wonderful experience and would recommend the Latch to all our friends!

Hello AngelaC3866; Thank you so very much for staying at The Latch Inn and for the wonderful review you've left on TripAdvisor. We're thrilled to see you had a memorable experience with us. Balconies were not commonly built for private residences back in the early 1920s so the "Miraloma" Suite, our one and only suite with balcony with breathtaking views of the marina, is a sought after room and does get booked up quickly. Don't hesitate to call on us at the Inn before your next visit to reserve your suite with balcony. Fingers crossed it will be available to you when you visit us next in beautiful Sidney by the Sea. See you again soon! Dominic, David & Michael

This charming B&B , guest house, hotel is the nicest place I have stayed in along time. Wonderful property outstanding service, spotless well appointed rooms and an amazing full on breakfast . Met by the gracious host Dominque who helped us store our bikes and showed us to our room and served a wonderful breakfast by Dave of homemade muffins and beautiful eggs Benny with lots of fresh fruit.
This is definitely the #1 place to stay in Sidney.

My husband and I had a lovely relaxing stay at “The Latch Inn”. The location is stunning on a peninsula looking over the inlet and a harbour. We stayed in the beautiful Miraloma suite, which had a very comfy king-size bed, cozy fireplace, sitting area, table for two and private balcony overlooking the water. First, I’ll say the Inn is truly charming. The current caretakers have done a fabulous job of restoring this grand dame with character and authentic style. I loved staying there and immediately felt a change of pace as we walked through the doors. All your needs have been thoughtfully anticipated and they are anxious you call them if they forgot anything at all. The lounge has a huge granite stone fireplace and is exquisite. You can order drinks to enjoy while playing a board game. After a wonderful sleep (it’s very quiet and the linens are luxurious) you are treated to a fabulous full breakfast made just for you “ala carte”, with juice and fresh fruit and eggs as you would like in the dining area (which also has a fireplace and overlooks the gardens and harbour. We only had one night, but left feeling refreshed after our stress-free vacation experience. We felt thought this little Inn offers excellent value for the high level of service we enjoyed. I can highly recommend it, and I’d double the rating if I could!

My wife and I stayed in this lovely inn, recently reopened and completely renovated and refurbished, with care to preserve its elegance and history . The new Inn-keepers , Dominic, Michael and David all come from experience in the hospitality industry in high-end hotels. What they have created here is really amazing! This 100 yr old former Lieutenant Governor's home is located on a quiet cul de sac surrounded by lovely lawns and gardens. We stayed in the spacious Governor's Suite , with king bed and full amenities.
The highlights to us were the friendliness of the inkeepers and their pride in what they have created and their breakfasts which were amazing. There were several choices on the menu. I had the omelette, which was more like a crepe, which I ordered the second morning as well, while my wife enjoyed the eggs Benny then had the omelette the second morning. We also got fresh muffins as well.
We highly recommend this inn for a short break, especially in Covid-19 times. The 3 inkeepers do all tasks ,thus eliminating any 3rd party help. We felt safe at all times.
We have stayed in many Bob's around the world and this one tops them all.

David, Michael, and Dom have created a boutique bed and breakfast experience which appealed to us on so many levels. We were made to feel comfortable from the moment we arrived
The heritage building is host to 6 sets of rooms. We occupied ‘The Lady Byng Room’ which was quiet, clean, nicely supplied, and exceedingly comfortable. There is also a large comfortable guest lounge which offers self serve coffee, and tea, for those of us requiring an early morning caffeine boost, or a chocolate chip cookie fix in the evening.
Breakfast was a wonderful experience. Made to order, elegantly presented, yet substantial enough to meet my requirements until dinner. The assortment of fruit garnishing each plate was a delight to look at and consume. We also enjoyed the home-made fruit muffins.
We’ll be back!

My husband and I enjoyed two wonderful nights at the Latch. Our room, W.C. Nichol was perfect. Being a corner suite, it had two different views of the water. From the moment you arrive, you will feel welcome by the hosts. The suite, sitting area and dining room are all lovely. We enjoyed both our breakfasts in the gorgeous sunshine on the outdoor patio. The surrounding gardens are spectacular which makes the Latch a magnificent setting. The breakfasts were as beautifully presented as as they were delicious to eat.

The three men running the Latch make sure you have everything you need and you couldn't ask for better hosts. They've mastered what it takes to provide guests with a wonderful stay. Be sure to spend at least two or three days so you can take advantage of the area. I highly recommend the Latch for people who want to cycle or kayak. We did a nice bike ride through Curteis Point and along the Lochside Trail. We took our kayaks and paddled through the bays in the area. Lots of seals and birdlife made for some really nice paddling. There are a few sandy beaches nearby for easy launching.

As this stay was done during COVID, the hosts have made sure that everything is very clean and protocols are in place. You will feel safe staying here.

Our Latch Inn experience was truly magnificent! From the moment we pulled up in front of the wonderful character inn and were so warmly greeted by one of the 3 gracious hosts, David, we knew we were in for an amazing time. We were delighted to be shown all around this remarkable establishment, which oozed character. Each room was so brilliantly designed with exquisite attention to detail. We were fortunate to be in the spacious Library Suite with a garden view, so relaxing. The king size bed was so comfortable and enveloped us, soothing us into a restful slumber.

We awoke and waited to discover the culinary skills of Dominic. The selection of breakfasts was excellent and over our stay we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious 3 cheese omelette, the heavenly sweet and tasty waffles and the mouthwatering eggs benedict with a hint of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on, but made them surpass any others we’d tasted. Each course was complemented with an array of different fruits and we can’t forget the start with homemade fruit muffins. Of course, the service was of a concierge level. David, Dominic and Michael were always willing and keen to share their knowledge of the Latch Inn, which we loved. They also advised us of what we could discover in the area, including a selection of restaurants.

Some of my favourite things in the inn were the gorgeous hand carved wooden animal finials, an owl, a monkey and a bulldog. The fireplace common room upstairs was perfect to rest, while taking in the beautiful bay scenery and sipping on a drink and/or reading a good book. The location of the Latch Inn is wonderful. We walked around the marina and over to the park with lovely views of the area. By car, it is only a couple of minutes to the enchanting town of Sidney. I mustn’t forget to mention the yummy homemade cookies left out each evening for one to savour.

We truly can’t wait to return! Thank you David, Dominic and Michael for helping make our stay in Sidney unforgettable! The care and love of what you do is quite apparent and we were so fortunate to be a part of your hospitality vision!

In light of the current travel restrictions we decided to do a little local getaway for a night for a change of scene and pace. We had a wonderful time, Dominic checked us in safely, reminding us that no one would enter our suite except us from the moment of check in, all food and drink was delivered to the door with a discreet knock. The room, the Miraloma Suite, was extremely comfortable with a King bed, fireplace and private outdoor balcony looking over the marina. We sat out there enjoying a wonderful sunset until after 9pm in quite comfort. The breakfast in the morning was served promptly as ordered. It was delicious, beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared with a great balance of fresh fruit. Thank you to all three of the proprietors for their efforts to create this great little getaway that is out of the way enough to make locals feel like they have escaped and yet close enough to activities when the time comes to be able to enjoy it all with convenience. Congratulations!

We spent our 25th wedding anniversary at the Latch Inn with friends who were also celebrating their 25th. It was the perfect spot for a short celebratory getaway. The Inn is well appointed nestled near a Harbor with Inn Keepers that know how to pay attention to the details. There was a patio for pre-dinner drinks and the breakfast (included) was outstanding! The only negative is we didn't get to stay and enjoy it longer! Highly recommend.

A great find, disregard all the old negative reviews, the Latch has new hospitality experienced owners that have made this one of the best boutique inns on the island. Great location next to the marina, breakfast on the patio was simply the best, a bar service in the afternoon, large rooms with super comfortable beds, an Inn with a wonderful history, and with management that are true hosts. A+++.

Hi Kathy; I believe they do, but I'd suggest to contact The Latch directly to make sure you have the correct answer. You'll love the place, it is also on the water so even without A/C you can leave the windows open and enjoy the sea breeze/air.
