#2 of 9 B&Bs / Inns in Sidney
The Latch Inn, on Harbour Road in Sidney, is steeped in history and a glamourous past. In 1925, the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, Walter C. Nichol, commissioned famous architect Samuel Maclure to build him a summer home on a piece of forested property on the Saanich peninsula. The residence, completed in 1926 and coined ‘Miraloma', was a brilliant confluence of the environment and artistic design. Even today, it oozes an old-world elegance and charm. Once the playground for the upper crust, it hosted sumptuous garden parties and welcomed visits from dignitaries and royalty. Edward, the Prince of Wales, and his brother George enjoyed the classy and comfortable accommodation in a state tour of British Columbia in 1927. In the 1940s, it became known as ‘The Latch', reflecting the fact that every door in the house is opened with a latch and iron key.

My wife and I stayed in this lovely inn, recently reopened and completely renovated and refurbished, with care to preserve its elegance and history . The new Inn-keepers , Dominic, Michael and David all come from experience in the hospitality industry in high-end hotels. What they have created here is really amazing! This 100 yr old former Lieutenant Governor's home is located on a quiet cul de sac surrounded by lovely lawns and gardens. We stayed in the spacious Governor's Suite , with king bed and full amenities. The highlights to us were the friendliness of the inkeepers and their pride in what they have created and their breakfasts which were amazing. There were several choices on the menu. I had the omelette, which was more like a crepe, which I ordered the second morning as well, while my wife enjoyed the eggs Benny then had the omelette the second morning. We also got fresh muffins as well. We highly recommend this inn for a short break, especially in Covid-19 times. The 3 inkeepers do all tasks ,thus eliminating any 3rd party help. We felt safe at all times. We have stayed in many Bob's around the world and this one tops them all.

Upon returning from a few days in the Okanagan to have a break from the Covid Blues and enjoy the wine and food, we decided to overnight at The Latch Inn before a leisurely drive home the next day. It was the perfect dénouement to our trip. Although arriving on a ferry which got us there after normal check-in, Michael was ready for us and got us settled into our beautiful McLure Suite, and our friends into the Mira Loma Suite. Beautifully decorated, comfortable bed with lovely linens, gas fireplace and charmingly updated bathroom. Had an excellent dinner at the nearby Sea Glass restaurant, slept well and really enjoyed the sumptuous breakfast, beautifully cooked & presented, and smoothly served by David in the bright dining room the next morning. This trio (with Dominic) have brought the Phoenix back from the ashes of the previous management with the great sense of style and savvy knowledge of a good hôtelier. Our compliments, gentlemen.

We enjoyed a brief but wonderful escape to the Latch Inn recently, staying in the Samuel Maclure Room. Elegant and comfortable, the room afforded us an incredibly comfy king-size bed, a remote-controlled fireplace, a fridge to cool the bubbly and two chairs by the window to take in views toward the marina. We strolled a few minutes down the road for an excellent dinner at the Sea Glass Restaurant and then arose to enjoy a beautifully presented breakfast at the inn the next morning. It's wonderful that such a historic landmark has come under the new ownership of David, Michael and Dominic, who bring years of previous hospitality experience to their roles. They have created a warm and welcoming atmosphere while carefully preserving all the best elements of the property. We look forward to returning again to experience more of their magic.

The new owners have created a great B&B experience retaining the old world warmth and charm that we remember from the Latch Restaurant three decades ago. We received a warm welcome, saw excellent Covid practices, had a very comfortable bed and a beautifully presented delicious breakfast.
