2022 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
The Latch Inn, on Harbour Road in Sidney, is steeped in history and a glamourous past. In 1925, the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, Walter C. Nichol, commissioned famous architect Samuel Maclure to build him a summer home on a piece of forested property on the Saanich peninsula. The residence, completed in 1926 and coined ‘Miraloma', was a brilliant confluence of the environment and artistic design. Even today, it oozes an old-world elegance and charm. Once the playground for the upper crust, it hosted sumptuous garden parties and welcomed visits from dignitaries and royalty. Edward, the Prince of Wales, and his brother George enjoyed the classy and comfortable accommodation in a state tour of British Columbia in 1927. In the 1940s, it became known as ‘The Latch', reflecting the fact that every door in the house is opened with a latch and iron key.

The Latch Inn was taken over by Dominic, David and Michael a few years ago and transformed into a beautiful peaceful place to stay. There is an attention to detail in everything right down to the incredible breakfast. The Inn has only 6 rooms all beautifully appointed. We had a fridge in the room which was a nice touch. You feel like a guest in their home. After breakfast we would sit in the parlour and read. Would have sat outside on the lawn furniture but was too cool. Sidney is minutes away and downtown Victoria about 25 minutes. There are several wineries close by. We had a very relaxing stay there and will definitely return. Thank you all for your hospitality

We can't find fault with any aspect of our stay. Gracious management, an excellent location in Sydney, ultra quiet and clean and superb breakfasts. A character establishment for those fortunate enough to find it.

If you are a lover of historically significant heritage architecture and excellent hospitality on Vancouver Island, do yourself a favour and book a stay at The Latch. We can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed our 2 nights at this Inn. The hospitality we experienced was like nothing we had ever enjoyed before at a hotel. The rooms we stayed in were Lady Byng and W.C. Nichol, and they were so luxurious, clean, and comfortable, along with great personal amenities! We really enjoyed meeting David and Dominic (and sadly didn’t get to meet Michael.) The welcoming feeling, the well appointed common areas (so nicely decorated, along with many historical references to this cottage) the gorgeous gardens and large comfortable outdoor patio, the early morning coffee and the yummy evening chunky chocolate chip cookies provided in the lounge area, and the absolutely beautiful rooms all made us feel as if we were spending a few days with a family member at a cottage ….a family member that knows how to provide the most delicious breakfast also! Every detail is anticipated and covered here, and that is what we most appreciated. Congratulations to you for this thriving and charming place! Our 18 yr old daughter put all of our feelings into one thought when she said, as we were driving away, “I don’t think I have ever been so sad to leave a hotel”.

Very unique and charming home. Our recent two night stay at The Latch bed & breakfast was thoroughly enjoyable. Our rooms were very comfortable and we also had use of the large living/sitting room areas as well, where there is a large fireplace and a comfortable space to visit, play board games and enjoy a coffee. There were fresh baked cookies put out at 7:00 pm and coffee laid out at 7:00 am. Lovely location and beautiful grounds and outside patio as well. The breakfast selections included with our stay were delicious creations by their chef and the food presentation was amazing. Dominic and Michael took good care of us as I am sure David would have as well, but he wasn’t on shift while we were there. Would definitely recommend The Latch to friends and family, heck, and strangers too. Enjoy!

We were welcomed by Michael who took us to our well-appointed room with everything we might need. We had drinks on the sunny terrace with homemade nachos followed by home made pizza as the local restaurant was fully booked. This ‘room service’ menu had a good selection and was reasonably priced. Breakfast surpassed our expectations! And so attractively plated it was a delight to see and taste! Highly recommend,

My husband and I overnighted at The Latch May 12th and again, enjoyed our luxurious stay so much. We were greeted by Dominque at check-in as well as at breakfast the next morning. The McClure suite is really comfortable - light, airy and very cozy. Great bed, towels and toiletries. Breakfast is beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Go for the Latch Benny! We look forward to another stay in the not-too-distant future. Thank you Dominque for being such a welcoming host!

Thanks so much to David, Michael and Dominic for making our stay so special. Our 14 year old Goldendoodle was right at home and we are grateful you could accommodate her. And what a place! So tastefully appointed with incredible attention to detail--from Dominic's cocktails to the Michael and David's amazing breakfast the next morning. The beds and bedding were SOOO comfortable. We had the whole place to ourselves to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday as a group. This is a terrific place for a quiet getaway or to get together with friends. Highly recommend!

This is our first time at the Latch inn and can say that our experience has been wonderful. Our hosts have been nothing but helpful and provide a wonderful breakfast. The room we stayed in, the Library, was clean well laid out and has a historical look and feel to it. It was like being back in the early part of the 1900 century with 21 first century comfort. I would definitely recommend staying at the latch inn if you are ever on the island.

We stayed at The Latch Inn in February to celebrate my husband’s birthday. It was perfect! We had the gorgeous Miraloma Room with its lovely fireplace, balcony with a view over the bobbing boats, and very comfortable bed. There was lots of room to do my yoga in the morning. Breakfast was delicious and catered to vegetarian and gluten free needs. We also enjoyed two nearby restaurants, the Sea Glass a short walk away and Deep Cove Chalet a short drive away. Probably best of all was curling up in front of the fire in the very cosy lounge with homemade cookies! We didn’t meet Dominique but David and Michael were wonderful hosts. We look forward to coming back in the spring to enjoy the lovely outdoor spaces.
