We stayed here on Boxing Day for a family event. We were upgraded to a suite, the Cal Suite with a loft. Absolutely beautiful!!! We each had our own bathrooms and plenty of space. The only suggestion I have is that the sheets were a bit scratchy in the loft bedroom. And…this suite faces King Street with a bit of traffic noise. The restaurant, The Chilled Cork was not open upon arrival and did not open until 11 am the next morning. They did offer a free continental breakfast with muffins, coffee and fruit. It would have been nice if the restaurant had have been opened an hour earlier, as I enjoy their selections for breakfast. We choose a different themed room every time we visit. If you need a place to stay, treat yourself and book this hotel.
I've visited the hotel 5 years ago and left a raving review, and was looking forward to returning this time. Unfortunately this time I felt the hotel appeared overpriced as the room I was in (Chic Antique) was fairly standard - no wow effect. Blinds down all the time making it really dark, as the room faced the rooftop with extracts/AC units etc. Could hear every noise from next door as well. The most disappointing was the fact that they no longer open the restaurant for breakfast- came down jet lagged at 7a.m. and been advised it's not opening until 11a.m. They have coffee, muffins and cereal at the reception to go, but nowhere to actually have breakfast downstairs. Ended up googling a breakfast place nearby- Country Kitchen, which opened at 7 and was lovely. Overall I'm afraid I won't be returning again as it seems like a lottery how good the room would be and I'd definitely be expecting breakfast on site for the cost charged.…
My spouse & I stayed for 4 nights mid-week in July 2022, using the hotel as a base of operations to visit family in Southwestern Ontario (and a few craft breweries too!). We had the King Superior room 204 (The Den). Signage was a bit confusing to find the room at first as the hallway you're first on doesn't mention which direction it can be found. But we were close & someone directed us to the side corridor where it is located. The room is spacious and nicely laid out. We found the bed to initially feel quite soft, but after lying on it for awhile, it had a firm interior that got more uncomfortable. Don't know if the king beds differ from room to room, but this was a bit disappointing for a hotel room at $200/night. The door to the Juliette balcony was a bit tricky (see photo) - I had to go and ask at the front desk how to lock it, because the deadbolt knob was just spinning round & round. Turns out, it's a dummy knob - the locking action comes from the lever handle (up to lock/down to unlock). Would have been good to have that documented someplace in the room. The bathroom shower is massive, but the shower head was a bit strange - it's a folding head with 3 jets, but it had been folded down with the jets facing out - firing it up would have resulted in blasting yourself in the face (or the far wall). The lack of hooks to hang a towel on while using the shower was a bit of a disappointment too - the only hook was on the back of the bathroom door & that was quite a reach for anyone standing in the shower trying to reach their towel to dry off. Easily fixed with another hook closer (see photo for better location). In this eco-friendly environment of not changing out towels each day (always my choice), it would be better to provide more towel racks (there's only 1) for drying your towels (see photo for perfect location). A good stay - coffee was fine in-room, but the kitchenette cutlery was a little lacking (knife anyone?) Not a deal breaker, but details count at this price-point I think.…
This is one of the best hotels in Ontario. Each rooms are different in size and type and decoration, with different names. Convenient spacious rooms with amazing lobby and astonishing decorations everywhere. This place is a must see in west Ontario.
I wanted to post another favorable review of the wonderful Retro Suites and apologize for my previous review that was unnecessarily harsh based on government imposed deadlines during Covid My most recent stay in June was restful and most comfortable thanks to the great staff and amenities of the Retro Suites Welcome staff was friendly and professional and I felt an air of positivity and energy when I encountered a hotel team member Retro has always been my go to place when I have been visiting the Chatham-Kent area while on business and sometimes I have even enjoyed some personal fun time as well ! Thank you Retro Suites - you weathered the storm of Covid and I am pleased to enjoy current and future stays ! Big shout out to Tina at Retro. You are the heart and soul of Retro and you never forget what is important in the hospitality business ! Thank you…
We went here to celebrate my 5-year anniversary with my significant other. As I've worked in the industry I can be quite picky when it comes down to hotels that are noted to be the best in the business. This hotel is a great spot for some fun photos (definitely do the photo booth!!) Pre-arrival assistance is warmly received. The team is very pleasant and responsive when you email them for assistance. There are great packages available that we took advantage of! Our stay was in the King William Suite - I could not believe how gorgeous the room was. A minor critique to room quality: 1) the fireplace though heat came out, did not really give any ambiance. felt like the lighting was broken. 2) carpet stains from the furniture black marks aren't always appealing for a 200+ price tag on the room. 3) The heating unit rattled so much we ended up using the fireplace in lieu of the heater. The soaker tub is AMAZING. Definitely a selling feature. Though the shower/conditioner mix would - felt not like premium offerings. Again, would I care at any other hotel? No. but if you're putting Ontario's Premier Hotel on the wall.. you look for those small details. Towels/Bathrobes were a little scruffy but overall good quality. The service here was truly fantastic from the agents who checked us into Taylor at the front office who as there during the majority of our trip. Always so positive and made us feel so welcomed! My only feedback here would be on holidays pre-collecting what is open and to-do in the area. we went completely forgetting our anniversary fell on Family Day - though we asked we did not get the assistance one would hope for.…
We stayed in the King William room and it was one of the nicest rooms We’ve ever stayed in. Super clean and decorated beautifully. The hotel itself is a like a collector museum, inside and out. The outside deco facade was very cool. Staff were great, very kind, friendly and professional. We got a great souvenir in the photo booth for only 5 bucks 😀 and had a blast checking out the old memorabilia in the hallways. If your looking for something new and not the same old cookie cutter hotel this is the place!
Overall our stay was great, two nights in “The Library” cozy, clean, king size bed, loved the comfort of the room and spacious bathroom. The Cork is amazing for dinner, Thursday nights are 2 can dine for $49, fantastic food and drinks. Loved our stay, missing one star due to a strange vibration and thumping sound that goes on and off all day and night,
Always clean. Staff friendly and helpful. There’s a restaurant in the hotel and the food is enjoyable. Each room is different and the hotel has a lot of interesting decor. I always enjoy my stay here. There’s a great used book store nearby, an antique store. A beautiful little park across the street with a view of the water. The hotel also has plenty of parking. Many Victorian homes to look at in the area if you enjoy walking.
My wife found this gem of a hotel and booked us a surprise night away from the kids as a Christmas gift for me. The hotel is very well maintained with an interesting floorplan. The entire hotel is were creatively decorated; we enjoyed just walking around the building, getting lost in the criss-crossing halls, and admiring the artwork & decor. The staff were very friendly and attentive to the few extra requests we made, and even took the time to handwrite a welcome note. We stayed in the King William suite. It definitely gave a sense of royalty with the spacious room, luxurious bathroom with clawfoot tub & oversized shower, stained glass windows and grand furniture. Worth every penny spent. We will undoubtedly be back!
