Our resort can be found on the island of Koh Rong, a tropical getaway off the coast of Cambodia with white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and verdant forest. The island boasts a fabulous environment, from lush jungle to exotic savanna, fringed by a stunning shoreline, brimming with reefs and a multitude of unexplored islands, each with their own pristine beaches. Tucked away from the major tourist spots, the resort can be reached from the mainland in Sihanouk Ville in less than an hour, making it a secluded yet convenient seaside retreat. Sok San Beach Resort is a Khmer-style beach resort offering a tasteful blend of nature and comfort.

We stayed in August in a Family Chalet as a family of four. it was a mixed experience, but not as bad as we had feared from the last reviews. When we arrived we were shown to our rooms by an un-uniformed member of staff who gave us the really strong impression that we had ruined his day just by arriving! He may have been the manager but I really don't know. Most importantly though, the cleanliness of the rooms has been addressed. Our room was clean and everything was in good condition (except some of the bed linen had a few old, permanent stains). The rooms were also cleaned every day and there were no signs of the bed bugs that had been reported previously, phew! The beach is stunning, the sea is warm and inviting with a very gentle gradient and no noticeable rips, so great for kids. You can, unfortunately, see the after effects of the COVID travel ban all around the resort and something of a catch-22 for them in that they need tourists back to invest in maintenance but without that investment, they are not going to get the tourists back. For example, the restaurant has a very simple menu but nearly ½ of the items were unavailable for the whole of our 4 day stay. The bar had no draft beer for the whole stay. The used beach towel store was not emptied for 3 days. For the duration of our stay, the directions to our Chalet were: follow the path, turn left at the overflowing used beach towel store, then turn left at the overflowing rubbish bin. Whilst I appreciate that they need some investment to fix their infrastructure (wrecked beach bar, derelict spa building) the management could fix the small things with just a little effort but we didn't notice anyone managing the resort, I don't even know if there was a manager. Probably not, when the staff are sitting around in the only covered beach front area, drinking drinks that were bought elsewhere (despite signs telling guests not to do this!) whilst bins go unemptied for 4 days. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here but it is overpriced for the current standard offered and, after the 1st night we discovered far better and/or cheaper places to eat in the village next door (5min walk). Check out the Golden Beach resort in the village - not so good for beach access but great food and well managed by friendly, helpful staff.

Very nice view with white sand, there is a lot of garbage at the beach in the mornings but staff will clean it throughout the day, rooms are okay, typically south-east-asian and not really clean, the food at the restaurant is expensive and not the best.. Unfortunately most of the restaurants nearby where shut down during covid, so food options were extremely limited, the best place to eat was the local street kitchen. Also there is no „police beach“ or any other tourist hotspot on this island anymore, pretty much everything has shut down. All in all I would not visit this island again since it kinda feels like one big foreign company bought the island and ever since the cambodian flair is missing. But if you want to visit Koh Rong, book Sok San Resort, there is no better hotel on this island.

The beaches in Koh Rong are incredible and this is possibly the best. If you want a quiet oasis, are happy to stay on the beach paying inflated prices for adequate food this place may be for you. The nearby village was shut during our stay - across the island businesses have closed due to the pandemic and while the world is now opening up businesses have yet to return. This does mean that your options are limited and this hotel has a very limited food and drink menu and very inflated prices to go with them. Breakfast though is surprisingly good and we were quite happy with the selection and the quality. We had opted to take the hotel's speedboat from Sihanoukville at $40 return each and regretted it. We found that the public speedboat is far more comfortable, quicker, and costs only $14 each way. You do have to take a taxi from the public speedboat dock on the island but this is still better than the beat up boat they put us in. Activities are also overpriced - snorkelling will set you back $40 per person for a couple of hours whereas a half day boat trip from the main town will only set you back $15 and includes food and drink. Finally though, the room. They look great, look clean, have wonderful hot showers and air con. However we found our beds laced with bugs and were eaten alive. After three days our bodies were covered in hundreds of bites, so we cut our trip short and left early. We heard that cleanliness is an issue on the island and this resort is no exception.

The resort is on a wonderful beach with white sand and blue water, but that seems to be the only good thing you will find. The resort is quite rundown: rooms are small and smelly, bathroom got flooded when we first had a shower so we had to clean the drain that was clogged and most likely not cleaned in ages, the minibar was super noisy so we had to unplug it at night, no pest control so you are beaten day and night by mosquitoes and sand flyes, Wi-Fi doesn't work at all, breakfast selection is very poor (kind of English or Asian soup: no yogurt, no bread, no croissants, no cappuccino, no pancakes, no extra options), menu is limited and few of the already restricted options are not always available, bed linens are stained and have holes (we requested to have them changed after two days just to get "new" ones with more stains, pillow cases were not changed in 5 nights), the last day is basically not existent as the boat to leave the island is scheduled by the resort at 9 am so you have to check out by 8.30, at the check-in you are only told how much the bill will be but no information on the resort or the activities is shared. Basically a lot of things are not working and no one seems to care about fixing them.

Benjamin Franklin said it best. “By failing to plan you are planning to fail” and that’s exactly what this resort did over Christmas. Woefully short-staffed and under-stocked, they simply failed to anticipate how busy the Christmas weekend would be. An hour’s wait for food became the norm and half the menu was unavailable for days. We felt sorry for the staff who were all trying their best. Leakenha, Lai and Narith were stars in the restaurant, seemingly working around the clock. Sadesh, the operations manager, also rose to the occasion, eventually. It was all a bit hapless. We were grateful to get a room upgrade after complaining about the standard of our garden view room, but seven nights here was just too long: not enough food options; no pool; ridiculous menu pricing and all those sand fleas. If you’re going to book here, stay for 2-3 nights and then island hop.

Room Tip: Pack “Off!” to keep the sand fleas at bay. Don’t book a bog-standard garden view room.

Fantastic sea-side resort. Great choice for those looking for a comfortable relaxing stay on one of the cleanest and pleasant beaches you can possibly find. Soft white sand, well maintained, daily cleaned. Zero plastic on the shore and in the water at any time. Bungalow-style rooms surrounded by the topical trees. Nice and cozy restaurant. Pool table. Pier. Can arrange all usual fishing, snorkling and similar activities. There is a little fisherman village walking distance from the hotel - interesting to walk around. A few tiny bars and mini-shops with some essentials. Hotel has its boats connecting with its own private pier and waiting "lounge"/ garden near Sihanoukville. Very convenient in particular after lengthy transit from PP or other cities to have a nice place to wait for the boat departure with amenities, small bar etc. No crowds and no need to wait in the heat on a concrete pier in a larger port. The team (reservations, reception, restaurant, boat transfer) all extremely helpful and attentive.

I was here for two nights with my wife and I completely enjoyed my stay here. Beautiful white sand beach. Amazing calm sea. Clean water. Just loved it. Special mention to the guest manager Lucky who was very warm, welcoming, and helpful. The only thing they can work on is food. However, just outside the resort, there are a number of good restaurants in the Sok San Village. So do venture out and explore food options outside the resort.

I'm so happy we found a moment in space and in time. According to my (old) guidebook, I had to walk 1.5 hours to come to this place and I would find a tent camp called "Cambodia survivor" to sleep before going back to the other side of the island. Luckily in 3 years a whole resort of prefabricated air-conditioned wooden bungalows has been put in place, we can even eat a choice of different foods at the restaurant and they picked us up in Sihanoukville directly here straight by private boat- beware, not starting in Sihanoukville at the same post as the other boats to Koh Rong. Still, this great beach is deserted today (march 2020), with 20-30 persons maximum and you may walk from the fisherman village along the beach for miles. I'm sure in the near future we will see a growing turism and probably we will find more hotels, big boats and thousands people here, as I saw in some other place. So I am extremely grateful to have found a most beautiful place, deserted, and with a good comfort homestay. It doesn't happen often. Service was perfect, the reception is always ready to help. The umbrellas and beds on the beach are included. Right now you see that they bring everything from the mainland continuously, keeping this structure up must be a real effort. Sok San beach is now a wonder, and the resort is the place to go to be there. My suggestion as a long-time traveller is to go there immediately, do not delay. The 3 days we spent there were one of the most beautiful surprises in our Cambodia trip.
