Our resort can be found on the island of Koh Rong, a tropical getaway off the coast of Cambodia with white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and verdant forest. The island boasts a fabulous environment, from lush jungle to exotic savanna, fringed by a stunning shoreline, brimming with reefs and a multitude of unexplored islands, each with their own pristine beaches. Tucked away from the major tourist spots, the resort can be reached from the mainland in Sihanouk Ville in less than an hour, making it a secluded yet convenient seaside retreat. Sok San Beach Resort is a Khmer-style beach resort offering a tasteful blend of nature and comfort.

We stayed 7 nights in Feb. Arriving at the pier in Sihanouk we thought it would be easy to get a ferry to Sok San beach, it wasnt. Had to get ferry to Koh Toch first then haggle another to Sok San and when we arrived the tide was down so it was very hard getting onto the pier. Maybe it’s better to pay for the hotel ferry which is other side of Sihanouk and expensive at $25 pp.
The beach resort has its good and bad.
It’s situated on a fabulous beach with clear turquoise water. The bar and restaurant overlook this which is lovely especially in the morning for breakfast.
The rooms are not so great, they are not very clean, sheets are grey and grubby with stains and beds are hard. The house keeping needs improvement as they did not replenish toilet rolls and shower gel when it ran out and every night our newly made bed had sand in it. There are no walkways to the rooms so you have to walk on sand which constantly gets into everything.
We ate in the restaurant quite a few nights, our first visit was terrible, the service was bad, getting one starter (there was 4 of us) then the main courses, then the other 3 starters, no one seemed to care even when we complained to reception. The remaining times we just had the mains and that was ok. Food was good but slightly overpriced. Staff are very friendly but could do with better training.
Breakfast was lovely with a good selection of cereals, fruit, juices and cooked to order meals, very relaxed and a good start to the day.
We went on two trips which were good but maybe a little expensive. Glowing plankton and fireflies was amazing at $15 pp but only on when there is no moon. Island tour with snorkelling and floating village was good at $45 pp.
The beach is amazing with plenty of nice sun beds but on our first day we were badly bitten by sand flies so make sure to use repellant as they itch like mad.
On leaving we opted for the hotel ferry which meant travelling across the island on a truck to a river for the speedboat ferry, this was a very bumpy crossing so be prepared to be shaken up, cost $20 pp.
Overall it was a lovely week but I hope they make improvements as for the price it should be much better.

I’ll keep it as short as I can. The beach is amazing and you would be hard pressed to find anything better anywhere in the world. It’s very clean, gorgeous white sand (like talcum powder and squeaks when you walk on it) and the water is clear, clean and warm. There is nothing nasty underfoot and it was the beach that made the holiday. We stayed 6 nights and it was only the good weather and the fact that we could sit out all day that made us stay. If the weather had been bad we would have left sooner. We had one bad weather day and it was depressing as nowhere to go and nothing to do.

The resort was disappointing mainly because it was so tatty and not at all like other 3 star places we’ve stayed at during our travels. There doesn’t seem to be any reinvestment in the place. It was literally thrown together (glorified beach shacks made of wood) for the survivor tv series crew some years back and you can literally see that it’s been screwed and nailed together. The finish everywhere is very rough and basic and in some cases, dangerous. We had an upstairs room which was huge but had no sea view and the shower/bathrooms were very basic and hadn’t been cleaned properly for a long time. You can see mould and dirt splashed up the tile. My impression is that they do a quick turnaround clean between check out and checkin and the place never gets a good thorough clean. The bed was hard but comfortable and we slept well. A/C works well and the WiFi was good. The food...little choice and generally boring. We could not believe that they didn’t even have a green curry in the menu!! We had pizza for lunch most days and walked to the village at night to eat. Great Italian in the village! One thing we enjoy when on holiday is getting up in the morning and looking forward to breakfast and likewise, we look forward to going out to dinner in the evenings. There was none of that this holiday. Breakfast was 3 choices - Asian, English or Continental - but bizarrely, on our 4th day they suddenly changed to a buffet setup which worked much better. The eggs were always good but I wouldn’t have touched the sausage and bacon with a barge pole.

We would have done yoga each day but literally the day we arrived the yoga instructor left and then he came back the day we departed. The staff were very pleasant and wanted to please but as other people have noted, they aren’t switched on all of the time and don’t seem to notice when you want or need something even though there might be 3 or 4 of them stood doing nothing.

In my opinion they need to knock this place down and start again with something much much better. If we’d only been staying 2 or 3 nights perhaps we could have stomached it better but a week was too long. We are seasoned travellers and this just didn’t hit the mark. We enjoyed the holiday because of the beach but will not return. My advice is to read the good AND bad reviews before you book!!

After touring the historical sights of Cambodia for a while, we stayed here for a week. Absolutely stunning location right on the whit sand beach. Our air conditioned bungalow overlooked the sea, just a few metres away with out sunbeds just there for us. Free beach towels ever day. A short walk to the restaurant and bars and reception. The room was cleaned every day and though the room was small, it was adequate for our needs. A nice bathroom with two showers including an overhead deluge shower. The breakfast included was very nice indeed. Hot food from the kitchen to order plus loads of fresh fruit, bread salad Cambodian breakfast stuff fresh juices, tea, coffee milk and cereals etc. The beds were comfy enough if you like a firm mattress. The sea was very warm and sandy all the way in. The sand was so perfect it even squeaked underfoot. We ate out most nights. The village, a short stroll along the beach has a selection of restaurants and shops selling local and international dishes and brands.

Had a 5 night stay at this beach resort recently. When we arrived at the pier for our transfer to the island we were told that due to the sea conditions it wouldn’t be possible to dock at the resort but would be dropped off at the back of the island (nearer the mainland). The boat journey lasted about 55 mins and then they couldn’t get into the landing dock due to the weight in the boat. We then had to transfer into another boat for a 5 minute journey. We were then transferred onto an army style truck and driven across a very bumpy road for about another 20 minutes
to the resort. By the time we got to the resort we were exhausted. We had booked a chalet with sea view. The chalet comprised of a small bedroom and wet room - very basic. The bed was like sleeping of concrete. We were told at the welcome meeting that bath towels would not be changed during the stay unless you asked at reception but were not guaranteed to get a replacement as clean towels came from the mainland. There were no hand towels or bath mat. The only toiletries given were toothbrush/paste, shampoo & shower gel. There is no hair dryer in the room. Housekeeping left a lot to be desired, they were in and out the room in less than 5 mins. The food/drink in the restaurant was ok but expensive. Service was slow and poor. Many of the staff do not speak/understand English. On the day we Were

leaving we went for breakfast before checking out. On return to the chalet to collect our bags before checking out we found all our bags had been put out the room onto the porch and the housekeeping staff were in stripping the bed. We were disgusted by this and when we complained to Jerra at reception, she just came across as not interested in our complaint. When paying for your food/drinks/final bill, check amounts carefully. Many guests were being over charged or short changed as were we - twice we had to query our bills. When departing from the island we had to go through the same pantomime of riding the army style truck and transfer to main boat. The return journey on the boat was a nightmare with the boat bouncing all over the place. During our 5 night stay we never seen a guest boat docking at the resort, therefore we can only assume docking at the other side of the island is probably the norm. The resort needs to raise it’s standards as there is plenty room for improvement.

We spent 4 days on Koh Rong at Sok San Beach Resort, and absolutely loved it! This was one of the most stunning beaches we've ever been to. The sand was white, so fine (like sugar!), and the water was crystal clear even when you weren't able to stand anymore.

The room was basic (comfortable bed, nice shower, good water pressure, etc.), and for us, this was all we needed. We spent most of our time relaxing on the beach, and participated in the Sunset yoga and a few volleyball games. Something important to keep in mind, this island is roughly 80% uninhabited - still a very raw, natural place. Almost all the food, supplies, and utilities come from the mainland.

We really enjoyed the breakfast, (after countless months traveling throughout Asia, it was nice to see baked beans again 🙏) and found the dinner to be affordable. We had some dinners at the resort, and some outside in the village, and found the prices to be similar. (We are both vegan/vegetarian, so this could be a factor)

Overall we had an amazing stay here. We especially had great conversations with Lucky, Anna, and the receptionists. Check in/out processes were easy, and the staff were all extremely accommodating and friendly. Although it's a bit pricey, I would recommend using their Sok San Boat Transfer. We came from KR Sanloem, and paid for the transfer to Koh Toch and then a separate motorbike taxi to the resort. Leaving, we used their transfer service and it ended up being much more convenient and less of a hassle.

We stayed in August in a Family Chalet as a family of four. it was a mixed experience, but not as bad as we had feared from the last reviews. When we arrived we were shown to our rooms by an un-uniformed member of staff who gave us the really strong impression that we had ruined his day just by arriving! He may have been the manager but I really don't know. Most importantly though, the cleanliness of the rooms has been addressed. Our room was clean and everything was in good condition (except some of the bed linen had a few old, permanent stains). The rooms were also cleaned every day and there were no signs of the bed bugs that had been reported previously, phew! The beach is stunning, the sea is warm and inviting with a very gentle gradient and no noticeable rips, so great for kids. You can, unfortunately, see the after effects of the COVID travel ban all around the resort and something of a catch-22 for them in that they need tourists back to invest in maintenance but without that investment, they are not going to get the tourists back. For example, the restaurant has a very simple menu but nearly ½ of the items were unavailable for the whole of our 4 day stay. The bar had no draft beer for the whole stay. The used beach towel store was not emptied for 3 days. For the duration of our stay, the directions to our Chalet were: follow the path, turn left at the overflowing used beach towel store, then turn left at the overflowing rubbish bin. Whilst I appreciate that they need some investment to fix their infrastructure (wrecked beach bar, derelict spa building) the management could fix the small things with just a little effort but we didn't notice anyone managing the resort, I don't even know if there was a manager. Probably not, when the staff are sitting around in the only covered beach front area, drinking drinks that were bought elsewhere (despite signs telling guests not to do this!) whilst bins go unemptied for 4 days. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here but it is overpriced for the current standard offered and, after the 1st night we discovered far better and/or cheaper places to eat in the village next door (5min walk). Check out the Golden Beach resort in the village - not so good for beach access but great food and well managed by friendly, helpful staff.

The hotel location was fantastic and it was definitely worth spending the extra money for the beach front room, which was small and basic but met our needs (room safe, small fridge, air con and fan, pretty decent shower ).
There are some simple improvements that could make this a fantastic hotel.
1. Service at the bar was very hit and miss, when waiting to be served. We actually walked out once.
2. It took quite a long time to get served and we often spent get served peanuts when others were
3. The ferry journey was delayed even though we were all waiting to leave
4. Hit and miss happy hour, tried to say it had finished with 15 mins to go. Only limited drinks included
5. Little information on arrival and had to ask at reception re departure arrangements
6. Very few beach towels, had to wait 2 hours on our first day to get one, despite complaining twice
7. Asked for 2 extra pillows which took 2 day's to arrive

I would return, and suggest the management consider the basic points raised

It is hard to imagine a more beautiful location than Sok San beach. An incredible white sand beach lined with palm trees and a warm clear blue sea.

With a number of residences offering beach chalets from as little as $20 a night, I had thought that by paying more than $150 a night we would experience a very special stay. Our chalet was a good size with WiFi, aircon, fans and fridge. But it had rock solid beds, a mechanical pump near the chalet that woke us throughout the night and very basic bathroom facilities, not the cleanest either.

On arrival we opted to use the resort’s private boat, at double the price of the regular ferry, but due to sea conditions it couldn’t dock at the resort so we were dropped on the other side of the island and had to climb into an army-style van for a very bumpy ride across the island. This van then had to go back to collect the luggage which finally arrived one and a half hours later - when all we had wanted was to swim in the sea after a long journey!

As for the return boat journey, we were put on the blue boat, rather than the catamaran. I don’t know if this made a difference, and the sea was rough, but it was a nightmare one hour journey home, fighting against sea sickness and actually in fear of capsizing.

It’s such a shame as this resort has so much potential, but we did still have a lovely stay. I think a little more investment is needed to raise the standards of this resort to match the prices they charge - this could then be a wonderful place to stay.

Dear KTP310, Thank you very much for your review. Our company has set standards and we are sorry if those didn't met your expectations. The most challenging part being in a beach resort is the maintenance. We are doing maintenance as much as we can almost everyday if needed but due to high season we can't do it sometimes as we don't want to make noise and ruin the stay of majority. We hope you contacted the front office to get help about your "not cleanest" toilet as we will do our very best to help you out. We could've sent housekeeping team to address the matter or moved you to other room just to make sure your satisfaction. You arrived in a time that the sea condition wasn't as good as normal and we thank you if you understand that. We sent you to a safer docking area instead. And we are sorry if the luggages arrived later as you expected as we used the same truck that you used when we picked you up from the docking area and maximum to wait for the luggage was surely an hour if the day you arrived has a full boat. Sorry for waiting. And when you go back to the drop off, we used a different boat probably because of the number of the guests or the waves were better. On a positive note, we still thank you and we really appreciate that you have chosen our paradise on your vacation. Have an excellent day ahead. Best regards, SSBR Management Team

I'll start with the positives, the beach here is absolutely stunning! Very few people, white sand, great local restaurants, beautiful sunsets! We would go back for the beach alone. It's only a matter of time before an island airport is open and the tranquility is ruined so enjoy while you can! Great breakfast and fun activities planned twice a day which is the perfect amount.

The hotel is trying to be an upscale resort and is so close, but misses on a few areas. First off, the hotel needs to throw out all their linens and start fresh. We had dried blood and stains on our sheets, so we called to have them replaced only the new set also had some pretty gross stains. The 3rd set of sheets was still not clean, but we settled. The resort is otherwise very clean.

I appreciate that English is not the first language of the staff, however there is a lot that is lost in translation. For example, we booked a couples massage at the spa. When we showed up they only booked for one of us and we didn't realize until my boyfriend's massage started while I was sitting waiting and realized that no one else was showing up. The response was not an apology, but an accusation that we only booked one.

Finally, the transportation to the island is not straight forward. The hotel operates a private ferry service which is double the price of public and the clearly want you to take this. I reached out to the resort many times and no one could provide details on the public options. We ended up figuring this out on our own- it is chaos trying to get on a ferry, but otherwise pretty seamless.

The beaches in Koh Rong are incredible and this is possibly the best. If you want a quiet oasis, are happy to stay on the beach paying inflated prices for adequate food this place may be for you. The nearby village was shut during our stay - across the island businesses have closed due to the pandemic and while the world is now opening up businesses have yet to return. This does mean that your options are limited and this hotel has a very limited food and drink menu and very inflated prices to go with them. Breakfast though is surprisingly good and we were quite happy with the selection and the quality.
We had opted to take the hotel's speedboat from Sihanoukville at $40 return each and regretted it. We found that the public speedboat is far more comfortable, quicker, and costs only $14 each way. You do have to take a taxi from the public speedboat dock on the island but this is still better than the beat up boat they put us in. Activities are also overpriced - snorkelling will set you back $40 per person for a couple of hours whereas a half day boat trip from the main town will only set you back $15 and includes food and drink. Finally though, the room. They look great, look clean, have wonderful hot showers and air con. However we found our beds laced with bugs and were eaten alive. After three days our bodies were covered in hundreds of bites, so we cut our trip short and left early. We heard that cleanliness is an issue on the island and this resort is no exception.
