Amazing place! We loved the house, the room had a beautiful elaborated plaster ceiling! Casa da Moira decor is just great! Very good bed, delicious breakfast with incredible view of Maranhão dam! We'd a wonderful stay! João and Maria João are very friendly hosts that made us feel very welcomed!
We didn’t actually stay here but stumbled on it when we were looking for a lunch spot. We have never encountered such a friendly and hospitable family. We felt like they adopted us. Everything from excellent food to a tour of the whole property and then an invite to join an outing on the pontoon boat. The place is also gorgeous with all the rooms carefully brought back to life. Unbelievable views from the patio. We can’t wait to visit again!
I have always feared the famous definition “boutique hotel” or “hotel de charme”, in the language of Voltaire. We know the script: old building renovated to keep its original character, sometimes poorly equipped to provide the victims of many indifferent hotels the world over, with a sense of comfort coupled with a good dose of often missed authenticity. This is not the case at Casa da Moira! Everything is simply authentic there, done in extremely good taste and everything works! Composed of two very well appointed houses near the historic centre of Avis (pronounced avEEsh), a little town in the Alentejo region which is an amazing hidden gem, yet so important in Portuguese history, Casa da Moira is run by a charming couple and their young daughter. João, Maria and Francisca all make you feel at home from the moment you step into their property or sit at the long table with them. Their language skills and ability to accommodate guests’ requests are simply outstanding. With a beautiful view over the olive plantations, good local food and wine, a relaxed and plentiful breakfast at the terrace, and a staff of smiling and friendly personnel, we left with the feeling that we now have new friends. One activity not to be missed is the boat trip on the Maranhão Dam. It was a weekend of total relaxation, and the company of the family running Casa da Moira was one of the highlights of the weekend away from it all. We can’t wait to go back and see them again. …
This guesthouse has the best of Portugal to offer for any time of the year, whether for a 1 week vacation or for a weekend getaway. We start right away by the way we are warmly welcomed by the sympathetic owners. This accommodation is very well situated in the heart of Avis and has two tastefully decorated spaces full of detail and sublety, having a balcony with a fantastic view ideal to enjoy a drink watching the sunset at the end of a summer afternoon or enjoying one of the several fireplaces scattered around the houses on a rainy or cold winter day. The room I stayed in was very spacious, again beautifully decorated, the bed was extremely comfortable and in the bathroom with towels and amenities of very good quality. Breakfast with lots of quality and variety and they had homemade jams and muesli, as well as the fresh squeezed orange juice and homemade lemonade and the scrambled eggs and the pancakes made at the moment. I joined to the other guests at the end of the afternoon for a glass of wine and a board of cheeses and charcuterie accompanied by shared talks on the warmth of the fireplace. Later on at dinner we were presented with a delicious and traditional homemade meal in the old stables that was transformed into a beautiful dining room. The guesthouse also has some activities in which unfortunately for meteorological reasons I did not have opportunity to try but it is always another reason to return. A big thank you to João, Maria João, Francisca, to all the attentive staff and even Menta (dog) for welcoming me, for the good moments and making me feel at home, I will certainly come back for a visit.…
Casa da Moira is an unusual and exceptional hotel. It is stylish and classy and at the same time warm and welcoming . Our suite overlooked the verdant hills and the river. The sit out cum terrace was the perfect place to have a romantic and private dinner on our first night. Francisca thoughtfully suggested that as we were very jet lagged. Much attention was paid to my dietary requirements and I always had a choice of many foods. And with all this special attention, Casa is value for money. The wine, the food, the ambience, the wonderful talks and the engaging guests we met, made our trip memorable. The family, baby and dogs made us feel totally at home and we can't wait to go back.
Casa da Moira is a very sophisticatedly run establishment in a beautifully renovated 16th century house, with elegant furnishings and interesting artwork. We had a huge bedroom with two (very comfortable) double beds and a big sitting room, as well as a huge bathroom along a separate corridor, all our own space. There are various communal rooms with fireplaces and a pretty terrace for outdoor eating, lounging and drinking. Below this, there is a further terrace with a garden and swimming pool. With very hot weather in Alentejo this September, we made full use of the pool. We were invited to have drinks with the family and other guests the first evening and on the second also chose to eat at the Casa. The meal was delicious and memorable, as were the breakfasts with a huge selection of items that could be chosen in the kitchen and taken out on the terrace to consume. The sunset river cruise was great fun, with a chance to see Avis and its surroundings from a different angle and an amazing sunset. The sangria went down well too. Moira, Raoul and Francesca were all exceptionally friendly and charming, with Alice the baby and the two dogs, all making us feel very much at thome. The family are renovating another large house across the street which will be run along similar lines, so we wish them every success with this project too.…
Excellent facilities, family atmosphere, fantastic and attentive owners, possibility to do boat trip on the dam, canoeing, among others. Only 1 night stay wishing to stay longer, we were very well received, the weather in Avis in the summer is superb, we stayed in the room by the pool and we recommend it for family or two. Nothing negative to point out.
What an amazing place !! Well done Joao and Maria for making us feel so welcome and at home !! The view is fantastic, the food is just simply out of this world !! I will definitely return !! Once again thank you Joao and staff for an amazing few days . I won’t forget it - Vivian
My husband and I, along with a few friends, stayed here for two nights in July, and we could not have been happier with our stay! Our only regret was having to leave. The hosts and staff are wonderfully welcoming and make you feel very much at home. The rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated, and there are so many lovely common areas to relax in, particularly the outdoor patio. Breakfasts were very nice, and we were pleasantly surprised to learn that they are able to provide lunch for a fee and some advanced notice. We did that one afternoon and it was delicious. And then there is the charming Jack Russell terrier who loves to play catch with the guests. We felt very lucky that we were able to stay in this beautiful place while we were in Avis. Casa da Moira ranks as one of my favorite guest house experiences not just in Portugal, but of all the places I've visited. I can't recommend it highly enough. Book early as there are only four rooms.…
