#3 of 6 hotels in Boca Chica
Travelers' Choice 2019 Winner
Certificate of Excellence
Hotel Bocas Del Mar, in Boca Chica, is a boutique hotel with modern, luxury features. In a privileged oceanside location on the mainland, it is perfectly positioned for a completely relaxing vacation. We were TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award Winners in 2019 for the Top Hotel in Panama. Our focus is on quality customer service and attention to detail. We have large contemporary-style guest bungalows that are set in tropical gardens right alongside the glistening blue water of the Gulf of Chiriqui. Open your drapes each morning and the Pacific Ocean is there to greet you! There's a good-quality restaurant & bar on site and we have not one but TWO stunning infinity-style pools to bathe in. We have our own dock to head to local beaches via water taxi or excursion boat - we are opposite the beautiful islands of the Gulf of Chiriqui and have a full ocean and land trip program. Just 45 minutes by car from David city (towards Panama City) and 90 minutes from Boquete.

My wife and I loved the hotel. The landscaping is great. We woke up every morning to do some birdwatching before breakfast followed by a lazy day around the pool... a true vacation. Getting there from David was easy, we took a bus from Boquete to David and got an Uber from David to hotel for $23. Getting from the hotel to Panama City was not as easy. We waited 1.5 hours at Hornocitos Cross for a long distance bus from David that was not full, so leave plenty of time going East by bus The only thing we were not too wild about was the restaurant. Got the fish the first night which was rubbery so I got a hamburger the following lunch and was content with that for the next 3 lunches/dinners, it was a good burger. We liked hotel and the grounds far too much to not give a five star review though. Order the hamburger and have a great time.

Thank you for your kind review of your stay and feedback, which we have shared with the rest of the team. We are thrilled you enjoyed getting to know the exotic birdlife around the hotel. We have a wide range of international and national dishes on the menu, including fresh seafood, and are always happy to make adjustments at the time if something is not to a guest’s taste or satisfaction. For the benefit of future guests, we are 20 minutes from the InterAmerican highway, and if not arriving by car or transfer, we can send more details of local public transportation by email on request. Best wishes, The Hotel Bocas del Mar team

I’m going to cut to the main points. This hotel is nothing short of incredible and I’d like to share the good, but I think it is crucial for FAMILIES, OLDER COUPLES, or anyone traveling with CHILDREN to hear the horror we experienced. Please read our story. Please. On March 5th 2020 as my son, husband, and I were walking up the extremely narrow sidewalk of the Bocas Del Mar hotel, in a matter of seconds, my 1 year old son pulled away from my hand, tripped, and fell face forward onto the concrete border of the water passage. It is important to note that the sidewalk is roughly 2.5 feet wide and the water passage for rain is parallel to the sidewalk. He didn’t run far from us, he was right at our fingertips. Immediately there was blood everywhere and we were frozen in panic. We waved over the people from reception and the man we spoke with told us we would have to drive to David to go to the hospital - and he informed us it was an HOUR AWAY. He gave us some gauze, tape, and hydrogen peroxide and sent us on our way. That was it. At this point we were concerned of a head injury and that an hour ride would jeopardize our son’s wellbeing. But there was no choice, so we got in the car and cried our way to the hospital. My husband was holding back tears the entire drive. We were supposed to check out this day (March 5th) and head to our reservation in Boquete. Sparing SO MANY details, we made it to the Hospital in Chiriqui, had the CT scan and bone evaluations done, and were told to wait until 3pm to begin the procedure to stitch him back up. The wait was unbearable and my son was crying ALL DAY LONG. He couldn’t have anything to eat or drink. Again sparing details... There was no way we could get back to Bocas del Mar in time to checkout so we found a way to call the hotel and asked if it would be possible to stay another night since all of our belongings were still at the hotel. Of course, they said yes. However, after the nightmare of a day, arriving back to the hotel almost 12 hours later, having to pay on the spot over $1,200 at the hospital, as toursists who had never been to Panama before...this is what we were offered by Bocas Del Mar: fresh towels, 3 water of bottles, a free small bag of their coffee, and $40 off of our extra night we were practically forced to reserve. Important to add they discounted $40 from THEIR price not the price we had paid originally and they added tax which then brought the price up to right about the same price we had originally paid per night. We had no other option to come retrieve our things and go somewhere else by the time our son was recovered from sedation at the hospital. When we walked into our hotel room I couldn’t keep it together, I wanted to go back home. I couldn’t believe what they had offered us after my baby literally cracked his face open on their property. With all of this said, we will never come back after this experience regardless of how beautiful it truly is. We felt helpless and alone and Bocas Del Mar did the bare minimum for us. Cutting to the good points. The hotel was like nothing we’ve ever experienced before. Breathtaking views, the birds chirping all day is almost like a clip from Snow White, and the food is great. It feels very intimate and you don’t see many of the people staying there. It’s relaxing beyond compare and has everything you need. The staff is kind - especially the restaurant and bar staff. They won our hearts. The room was magical and a great place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I so badly wish this experience would’ve been different. It is worth it to stay, but I would be extremely cautious with anyone who may be at risk of falling especially knowing that the nearest hospital is an hour away. Thankfully we had our own vehicle, otherwise I’m not sure how we would’ve made it to the hospital.

All the team were very saddened that this last day was affected by your son’s fall. Our primary concern at all times was that your son made as speedy recovery as possible. Guest well-being is our priority and we will review and reflect on your comments. We are a family-friendly and couple-friendly hotel, as other reviewers have commented. Panama is a developing country, however healthcare available through traveler insurance plans is good, and guests should always feel reassured when visiting our beautiful country that they will be in good hands. We’re pleased that you enjoyed so much else of your stay, and thank you for your comments. Kind regrds, The Hotel Bocas del Mar team

Sweet place. Exceptionally clean (where everyone in Panama has a difficult battle with the humidity and insect environment, these guys are keeping ahead of it). Classy, comfortable, great food, and great service. Definitely the best of our 6 stays in Panama (over 3 weeks). Would stay again longer, next time.

Location is superb with spot right on the ocean and our covered patio right out front. The food was excellent but we were hoping for more fresh fish. The staff was very attentive and spoke English very well. We took a 4 hour boat tour, saw many beautiful beaches and saw the dolphins cavorting around us. All in all an excellent value!

We booked 2 rooms for 2 nights. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they speak various European languages. We liked the attention and the professionalism. Food is excellent. The cabañas were spacious, clean and rather new. We took a trip to Gamez Island and a sunset trip to the mangroves, we liked both. Boca Chica is a beautiful spot and the waters are absolutely clean. On the islands there were other few tourists. We will come back.
