We had a great stay at Maquenque Lodge. The staff is very friendly and gave us all the advise we needed. The bungalow was perfect, a large and clean bedroom and bathroom with a lovely vieuw on a lake. You can spot birds from the terrace - it feels like a private house because of the plants surrounding you. The treehouses are a bit far from the reception and restaurant area and pretty high to climb 3 times a day. So we were lucky to stay in a bungalow. In the restaurant you have a great view on the lake as well - bird feeding place is close so you can watch all the great coloured birds. The food was super ! enough choice and nicely presented. we did a few guided tours - I would highly recommend the boattrip to Nicaraguan boarder. really worth it. The pool was nice and we got company there of a coati - we've seen several of them - friendly funny animals The Lodge can only be reached by crossing a river which makes it super special and quiet. You feel like in a different world. The last 20 km to drive to the parking area are a bit bumpy but once you are there you know it was worth it. I would definitely book Maquenque lodge again

We had a three night stay here as part of a Costa Rica road trip as two couples. We each had a tree house - one in the older part of the forest, one newer one in the more open secondary. We had the newer design treehouse and at first were a little disappointed not to be in the middle of the trees. However, it turned out we had better views and saw a lot more than our friends! We did three tours - the night walk, the morning forest walk and the river trip to the Nicaraguan border. Note that we were here in March 2020, just as the Covid-19 restrictions were being implemented, so all was very quiet. Our guides were great and we saw so many things - snakes, frogs, monkeys, cayman, crocodiles, iguanas and many many birds. It is an absolute dream for wildlife enthusiasts, whether you are expert birders or just love nature. The restaurant was fine, nothing special, and after three days we were getting a little bored with the menu. But the food was generally good and plentiful. The only drinks available in the room are either water or a coffee machine. One constructive improvement would be somewhere to purchase beers or other drinks to have in the rooms. There are fridges in the rooms, lovely places to sit and watch the wildlife, so a cold beer or soft drink would be most welcome. Maybe stock up before your visit on the way?? Overall we loved this place, the lagoon and forest were peaceful and so full of life. We would love to return.

I stayed here for 2 nights in January 2020. Loved this Eco Lodge. A warm welcome from the proprietor himself and his excellent staff. Early morning bird photography was an unforgettable experience at Maquenque with mist and birdsong, watching a Kingfisher diving in and returning to the same tree to enjoy his breakfast. Food and service was excellent at Maquenque with a nice choice of beers and Chilean wines. Food was lovely too with a wide choice of local cuisine. The restaurant overlooks a lake with plenty of wildlife. The cabins were spotlessly clean with an excellent shower and a powerful fan in lieu of air conditioning. The birding within the grounds and nearby was very good. When back in Costa Rica Maquenque will be top of my list of places to stay.

A wonderful peaceful oasis, with amazing bird life and the distant sound of monkeys. The rooms are comfortable, feel very private overlooking the lake, and the restaurant is friendly. The food is simple but well cooked. What more could one want.
