What an adventure this was! After driving twenty-five kilometers on a dirt road, we arrived in the Lodge’s parking lot with no hotel in sight. There was a restroom and a phone on the wall which connected us with Reception, who then sent a boat to pick us up (we could see the boat and landing across the river). Once across we walked 10 minutes along a gravel walk with lush Costa Rican “forest” on either side. At Reception we were greeted by Vicki who coordinated our entire stay beautifully and arranged for one of the staff to carry our suitcase up the gravel path for another 10-minute walk to our very own treehouse. Forty-eight steps up we found a gorgeous deck looking out over the jungle, and inside a king size bed in an amazingly comfortable room, with complete bath, including shower with windows on two sides looking out over the jungle. The grounds are lushly forested with a beautiful “lagoon” complete with caiman whose eyes shine in the gleam of nighttime flashlights. The open-air restaurant serves delicious fare for both the guests, and the birds who flock to a short platform covered with fresh fruits which attract them, making birding an up-close-and-personal experience. During our two-night stay we took two tours, both with our excellent guide Jose. On the night walk he led us around the property where he pointed out the caiman’s shining eyes, plus colorful frogs, friendly snakes, and night-blooming flowers. On our daytime boat tour up the river to the Nicaraguan border Jose pointed out iguana, crocodile, many types of birds, old homesteads along the shore, and gave us a snapshot of the history of the area – including the fact that his father made the furniture at the lodge, harvested from a local farm.

My wife and I stayed at a Maquenque Treehouse in December 2020 and had an excellent time! The treehouse makes you feel like you are in the lap of luxury in the middle of the jungle. Waking up to the sounds of the birds and monkeys was incredible and seeing the colorful birds from our treehouse balcony was amazing! The staff, especially the manager Julio and the naturalist Jose, went above to beyond to ID birds for us and make sure we got the most out of our stay. They also respected Covid guidelines very well. I would highly recommend staying here!

What a great time we had. Julio and his team went beyond all we have experienced in treating our family just perfectly. Our little kids enjoyed the amazing wildlife, food and the wonderful bungalows. Just a perfect stay!

We had the opportunity go to Maquenque Lodge with the Costa Rican Electric Vehicle Association -- ASOMOVE -- last weekend. We had never been to this area of the country and we had an awesome weekend. The CR EV association promotes sustainability and particularly electric mobility -- cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters and public transportation. The eco-lodge was the perfect setting to discuss topics related to the association's work. The staff at the eco-lodge were incredibly friendly and helpful. The common areas are well-maintained. And nowadays one must be careful of COVID, so it was important to see that the hotel had protocols for keeping everyone safe, and that the guests and staff were paying attention to them. Another important part was the food, since the hotel is on its own island, it's not easy to eat somewhere else. The prices were reasonable for this category of lodging, every meal was really tasty with ample portion sizes and fresh ingredients. Speaking of food, the hotel has its own organic farm that provides most of the food for the restaurant. Tours of the farm are available, it was included in our package and it was worth getting up early for to hear the history of the family homestead and how the hotel was created by Don Eduardo's family. The bungalows were rustic on the outside and elegant on the inside, they are less expensive and more convenient to the common areas, so a good choice for anyone that has physical limitations or just wants to be near the lake, pool and restaurant. The tree houses are an incredible setting and unique, they are isolated from each other and from the main lodge, so you get a true rain forest experience. Unmatchable! Definitely recommended for anyone who is even slightly adventurous. You are literally in the forest canopy, the sounds of the forest at night are amazing, and throughout the day you gain different perspectives as the climate changes and wildlife passes through. The access from San Jose is pretty fast, almost all the way are excellent roads after you get through the Braulio Carillo National Park. The last 11 kilometers are pure gravel road, so an SUV is a better choice if possible.
