Disclaimer: some parts of my review might sound overly hypocritical, although they are not intended to be. I am rather trying to provide constructive feedback to a resort that just like many activities throughout the world was hit by covid and is now fighting to recover (we witnessed improvements on a daily basis). All in all we enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back. Gangga Island We arrived on the 5 of August after a 12 hours flight from Frankfurt to Singapore and a 3.5hours flight from Singapore to Manado. Arrival in Manado Manado airport is pretty small and has been recently renewed. Upon arrival there is a short queue to purchase the visa on arrival (in case this is your first entry point in Indonesia) and subsequently immigration and customs clearing. You will spend at least 1 hour to go through the whole process. Positive factor is that your luggage will definitely be there once you are done with the bureaucratic stuff. As soon as we exited the airport, a representative from Gangga island resort was waiting for us and drove us comfortably to the village which is right in front Gangga island. The one hour ride was in a Toyota Land Cruiser with air conditioning. All in all quite a comfortable with air conditioning. Once arrived at the harbor we waited less than 10 minutes for one of Gangga’s diving boats to arrive. Boat ride to Gangga Resort’s peer was around 15 minutes. Arrival at Gangga Island Resort Upon arrival at Gangga’s private jetty we were greeted by the whole hotel staff singing for us, this was quite nice and welcoming. We met our hotel guide who helped us with the check in and supported us with the organization of the activities throughout our stay. A million thanks to Junita who helped us organize our stay (really super professional)! The resort The resort is relatively big in relation to the number of rooms it has, definitely a big plus. This means that even if it is fully booked, you will never have the impression that it is overcrowded. To the contrary, we really had the feeling of being on our own private island. Resort staff is highly trained and super welcoming. They will do everything they can to make your stay unforgettable. Kudos to the restaurant’s Chef and staff who clearly do their job with lots of passion. The restaurant offers a fixed menu for lunch and dinner with the possibility to choose from different main courses and desserts. Food was always fresh and never repetitive (nice mix of local and international cuisine). Breakfast was buffet style and also with plenty of options to choose from. The resort area including the beach are kept immaculate by the resort’s landscaping team who are constantly working to keep the sand clean from leaves and from plastics (unfortunately plastics is still quite an issue in Indonesia). It was nice to see that some of the resort’s guests also contributed to the beach clean up. Our room (3A) was relatively close to the restaurant and lobby and on the first line on the beach (15 meters from the sea) It was relatively big for a couple and with a nice outside patio. We had the impression it was recently refurbished (particularly the bathroom). Although we were told that the Wi-Fi only works in the lobby area, we could catch the signal from our room most of the times with no problems. Through our stay we have never experienced power shortages as the resort has two power generators on top of the solar panels. Diving with Gangga Divers Gangga Divers is quite a famous diving operation in the area of Manado. They can organize excursions both for divers and snorkelers in more than 40 dive sites. They have no issues in accommodating daily trips that are suitable both for divers and snorkelers (I personally found this quite uncommon, and highly appreciated it). During our stay, Gangga divers was organizing a maximum of 3 dives a day: two boat dives in the morning at 8:00am and one boat dive in the afternoon at 2:30pm. Note that at the beginning of our stay the resort was unable to offer night dives (we had complete dive equipment also for night diving) nor mandarin fish dives. We have also tried to ask for some tanks so that we could dive the house reef on our own at night but the resort did not want to accommodate such request (I see this as a plus in terms of safety as there can be quite some strong currents even for experienced divers). The resort manager did everything he could to get hold of some missing equipment from Manado (I.e. diving torches for the guides) and eventually managed to organize some night diving for us. The day excursion to Bunaken is a must if you would like to either dive or snorkel with turtles, on our way back to the resort we even saw plenty of dolphins. The dive center is also organizing PADI courses in case you are interested. They do not have a resident PADI instructor at present, but can organize courses with freelance instructors in the area. In case interested ask for Dalton Ambat who is a highly experienced PADI instructor (also experienced with kids). Snorkeling from the resort and house reef Snorkeling from the resort is definitely possible in the house reef (on the left hand side of the jetty, marked with black buoys). You should simply pay attention to the currents which can be relatively strong (in general there will be some of the resort staff watching you from the jetty and ready to assist in case needed). This is not the most amazing snorkeling spot of the area and I definitely recommend to arrange some snorkeling from the boat. Given its exposure to currents, you might unfortunately find some plastics in the house reef. Highland Excursion Definitely worth it! We have started our day by visiting the local market in Airmadidi. Our private guide arranged by Gangga walked us through the market and we saw spices, making of local cakes, as well as the fish and meat sections (the latter is not for the faint hearted, you can ask to skip it if you don’t feel like visiting it). After the market we drove off to the Waruga ancient cemetery, volcanic lake of Tondano and Lake Linow (sulphuric lake with constantly changing colors). We then saw a factory where they build the typical Minahasa houses and stopped for lunch at an amazing restaurant in the middle of a private botanical garden. Right after lunch we drove off to a typical Buddhist temple and decided to skip the souvenirs shopping to pay a quick visit to one of Manado’s active volcanoes. We were back in Gangga at around 5PM, right on time for the afternoon coffee and cakes. All in all it was an amazing day trip, a perfect fit in case you would like to get in touch with the local culture of North Sulawesi. Tangkoko Nature Reserve Excursion Although we had initially planned to have such excursion, we finally opted for some additional diving. This is because Gangga resort was unable to accommodate the excursion jointly with some friends coming from another resort (Highland Resort). A bit unfortunate. Suggestions for the Resort (and for the Lotus group), taking into account that the resort is still recovering from the covid crisis: I was impressed by the amazingly low amount of plastic materials used in the Resort. A small improvement can be done by replacing the two complimentary plastic water bottles each room receives daily by refillable glass bottles. Same goes for the plastics underwear that is provided by the SPA (not really needed). Gangga Divers should definitely organize frequent conservation events to clean up the house reef. I understand that virtually zero rubbish laying in the reef is produced by the resort but rather brought by the strong tidal currents. This should however be no excuse for not cleaning it up more frequently. Inform guests upon reservation if some activities (e.g. night diving and mandarin fish, 4 dives per day) or services (I.e. Nitrox) are not available. Managing expectations is generally easier than managing complaints. Ask guests if they have some preferences for the diving sites. Snorkeling safety should be taken as seriously as diving safety. Please provide snorkelers with some signal buoys in order for them to be seen by boats passing by. PADI 5 stars resort status. The PADI 5 stars resort status implies a minimum commitment and service level from the resort. At the time of our visit the resort was unable to keep up with the 5 stars status (Nitrox unavailable, Impossibility to consistently organize 4 dives per day, not able to accommodate guests’ diving equipment needs, no resident diving instructor, no single conservation event planned during our stay).

My husband and I spent our covid quarantine for 8 days in January, 2022 at Gangga. We had an excellent experience. The bungalow was beautiful, comfortable and clean. We were asked to stay in our bungalow during quarantine. The masked & gloved staff would bring 3 meals a day to our bungalow, where we ate on the porch. Clean linens were delivered per our request. When our quarantine period was over and we tested negative, we were able to use the beautiful pool area and beach. We extended our stay to do some scuba diving and it was FANTASTIC. The food was top quality. The breakfast croissants are highly recommended. A special thank you to the manager, Chris, who personally helped us with some issues we encountered with government regulations and the airline.

I really enjoy my stay here. I love how they design the rooms to be right at the beach, it almost like every guess has their own private beach space. The room was also beautiful, spacious, and bed was comfortable. It was a very comfortable arrangement to have meals included in the price. Gangga was also very flexible with check in and check out and it had been very easy to arrange transport. Furthermore, this resort is perfect if you are into diving or laying around doing nothing. Beach was 10 steps away from your bed with little hut and sun bed. The area was always clean and serene. The only omnibus sound I heard was the wave and sometimes the birds chirping. Staff are friendly and attentive. I feel like I got one designated staff to take care all my need during my stay, which was a very helpful arrangement. Artin, the manager, also showed their solar farm and battery house when he knew that I was working for a renewable energy project. However, the 90s songs that had been playing on the loop in the restaurant could use some improvement, as well as some of the dishes (more succulent meat, please). Also, I think it would be amazing if Gangga could offer a massage by the beach. Other than that, I had a really great experience and will def come back if I have the chance!

Overall, we had a great stay at Gangga Island Resort. We came here for the 3rd time. Diving: All dive sites were reachable within 15-30 mins by speed boat. The sites are fantastic, especially for the small creatures. We were very pleased that throughout our stay we had the same dive guide just for the two of us. This made our dive experience even better. The gear is brought to the boat and set up for the divers – everything is well organized. Resort: Very nice bungalows with sea view, veranda and own beach lounger. The food is very good and usually lunch and dinner are served á-la-carte. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Since December 2019 the resort is under new management. Both of the managers are very professional and hospitable – they are seeking contact with the guests on a daily basis. We are looking forward to see how the resort will enhance even more.

This resort has so much potential, but currently affected by the lack of proper management. The rooms are good, but little things, like toiletries, lack attention. Service in the bar and restaurant is slow, with staff hanging around, seemingly in an aimless way. The dive centre is the exception, and I had some fantastic guided snorkelling trips around the nearby reefs.

We stayed 4 night here. A good place to relax and rest. They have swimming pool If you just want to swim. But you can also dive and snorkle here. Bunaken is a must place to go, the underwater scenery is very beautiful, and we saw a lot of turtle there. The food and room are ok. They got wifi also, but not too strong in some area, they actually can provide some trashbin in common area, so easy for us to throw trash away.

We had the most fabulous experience at Gangga Resort and Spa! We were treated like royalty by the amazing staff. From the food, to the massages, to the marvelous diving, this was the trip of a lifetime! My husband and I even renewed our vows here with a view of the ocean and the volcanos in the background. Just incredible!

Loved it. Nothing to do here but scuba, snorkeling, and lying by the lovely salt water pool or in your private sun shelter on the beach. Diving pleasant to amazing (Bunaken is a must; very worth the extra cost and the longish boat ride). Food good. Bungalows kept spotless. Beds comfy. Service great. Wonderful dive master (he took us to his house and served us fresh coconut chopped off his tree). Wifi good. I have nothing bad to say about it. All was great and as shown on their website. I should note that our experience was not exactly typical since we were the only guests at the resort for most of our 7 day stay. Late February is their low season, since it is the end of the rainy season. We had perfect weather the whole time, however. So our service was truly extraordinary as we had the entire staff eager to meet our every need just to stave off the boredom.

We just got back from a group diving trip run by Elmer's Watersports of Evanston, IL. It was an awesome 17 days of diving in Indonesia and the last 4 days were at Gannga. We got to relax and dive 2-3 dives per day at this beautiful location. It has a very good dive operation right on the property that went out of its way to make this as effortless experience. We never carried gear other than our cameras. The dive operator furnishes a mesh bag when you check in and picks it up from your door step and sets it all up for you. We had 2 dives per day scheduled but the diving was so good we ended up adding one more each day. Great food, and nice messages.
