Absolutely beautiful Island Resort; when you arrive the owner gives you a good rundown of what the island is about and what they expect of you when you stay; this includes topics and questions about the wildlife in the area and what to expect; do not leave food in your rooms or outside because the monkeys WILL get to the food and this can make them sick. This is an eco resort so they are all about conserving water and they want to eliminate rubbish. You are not allowed to bring in food either and this is not only about rubbish; but also about the wildlife in the area. I stayed in an overwater Bungalow and I feel like this was the best type of accommodation on the island because you can just jump off your balcony into the water and do a range of water activities and they are all free! You can hire kayaks, snorkel gear, paddle-boards etc, to see the amazing reef right on your doorstep “literally” They also are conservationists on the island and have a coral growing tour that you can go to free of charge too! My reason why I only gave the resort 4/5 stars is because the rubbish on the island in the water from the mainland is such a problem and it can get in your way when your doing activities! My group literally spent four hours picking up rubbish for the resort we picked up about 15 big black rubbish bags full of rubbish!; And I really think the staff need to be making more of an effort on doing this everyday. I was disappointed they didn’t even help us. My final point is please be aware of the “Jelly Bugs” you can’t see them and they are mini jellyfish and I had a reaction to them and my face was swollen so people that are prone to allergies please take multi epi—pens if you are on of those people because if you react to them your a long way from the mainland. But I would highly recommend staying here! It’s a stunning place and absolutely beautiful! I know this is a long review but I believe the more people know the better decision they can make about staying here! Enjoy your stay!

The resort and specially the waterfront villa's are great and highly recommenced. We had beside below comment a wonderful time. But - I do not understand how you can position the resort as Marine Eco park and accept en do nothing that the entire day the guest in front of the villa's destroy the coral. Your resort will not have a reef in a few years time if you keep accepting that al kinds of guest stand on the coral. In the 3 days we saw about 20 people standing (and so destroying) the coral. We called and talked to the water center, the reception and the restaurant people to get people out of the water and warn them not to stand on the coral - but NOTHING was done. I had so many tears in my eyes while your resort is destroying all reef and coral in front of the water villa. Please: - put a daily Gard at daylight time to watch over the bay so nobody will stand on the reef / coral - put signs in the rooms to remind people if they stand on the reef / coral it will be dead - remove guest out of the resort if they stand on the coral.

Would be 5 stars if it was not so expensive. The staff were uniformly excellent. The stay was very good. The restaurant serves good food. However, the swimming pool really needs a retiling for safety reasons. An expert in these matters should take a good look. Cottages were very good.

The best cost-effective experience I stayed for 4 days, and as time went by, my satisfaction increased. In particular, the staff service made our trip the best. Wherever we went, they always greeted us and asked us what we needed. (Some of them weren't even the service team.) I've been to resorts that were 8 times more expensive than this one, but the staff service here was much higher. If you come here, i want to recommend to meet Anderson. He had such ownership that we thought he was the son of the resort, and he helped us have the best experience. And we are very grateful to other guy for his dedication to helping us find the key. Finding the keys was very difficult and he did the difficult work himself even though we said we would do it ourselves. (It’s too sad I didn’t ask for your name.) It was a truly wonderful relaxation and heart-warming experience. Good views, high quality accommodation, complimentary activities, etc. Everything you need for a cost-effective rest is here. (However, restaurant rules change every time. Please make the manual clear.)

I recently stayed at Gayana Marine Resort in Kota Kinabalu, and my experience was far from the luxurious retreat I expected. Upon arrival, the sight of trash washing up to the resort was disheartening, contradicting the high-end image they market. The overall experience fell short of the luxury standard promised, leaving me thoroughly disappointed with my stay. The picturesque setting I anticipated was marred by the unsightly presence of debris, negatively impacting the ambiance of the resort. Despite their claims of being a high-end destination, the reality was quite different. While the potential for a beautiful and upscale experience is evident in the resort's concept, my stay was unfortunately overshadowed by the stark contrast between expectations and reality. I hope this feedback encourages improvements so that future guests can truly enjoy the premium experience they anticipate when choosing Gayana Marine Resort.

Response from Karl Sims, General Manager at Gayana Marine Resort
Responded Nov 23, 2023
Dear Nico, Thank you very much from all of us at Gayana Marine Resort for sharing your recent stay with us! Indeed, we are also devastated that our beautiful shore sometimes receives some debris right after a storm. As you are aware, we practice a very strict 'Plastic Free' Policy in the Resort precisely to create awareness of how much damage these debris cause worldwide and we strive very hard to collect and dispose all what may get washed into our shores. At our Marine Ecology Research Centre we focus on the propagation of the Giant Clams and encourage our guest to participate in planting corals to be put back into the sea! We thank you again for noticing the negative impact that debris causes to our beautiful world and hope that this can make more and more guests aware! Look forward in welcoming you back soon!

2nd time to the resort to celebrate my mum birthday. The room ( rainforest) has refurbished but some place still on renovation. The staff very friendly and decorate the dining area nicely. Unfortunately, no wifi available in the room but you can have it at restaurant. Be caution if you want to rest at balcony because you might 'visit' by monkey.

Hospitality reinvented! We had a truly unique and fabulous experience at Gayana Marine resort. From the moment we were met at the airport, the boat transfer and when we entered the resort, the friendly staff greeted us warmly. Our ocean room was comfortable and well equipped. The view from our room magnificent. Meal times were a feast. The staff helpful and professional, the food truly amazing. We came to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the staff had prepared us a special table for dinner. We also came for the diving and to do our Padi open water. Our instructor Oscar, was very professional and his explanations clear. We enjoyed every day. The spa was also very nice and has amazing views over the sea. Special thank you to Eduardo, Sandra, Suhaida, the ladies of the spa, the recreation center, the diving team and of course Oscar. You all made our stay fantastic!

AMAZING! I came to stay to relax & dive - both exceeded my expectations! The room on the water was amazing. Super comfortable bed, lovely shower. Even a Turtle swimming under my room. I dived at the in-house Gayana Dive Centre for 2 days. Richie the Divemaster was so calm & knowledgeable. I have never felt so at ease diving. I would come diving here again and stay if back this side or the world. What a great place. Great scenery, amazing Dive School, great food, Greta paddle-boarding (for free) & great spa treatments! Thanks for a lovely stay. (It’s a shame about the litter in the sea brought by the rain/storms, not the resorts fault. They clear up daily, but more comes from further afield)z

Great resort. We stayed at ocean villa 30 for two nights. Well maintained and special place. The staff are truely amazing. A special thanks to Karl the resort manager for listining to our feedback and returning some good karma. Also many thanks to the restaurant chef for the best food we had so far in Malaysia. Some small improvements: - airconditioning is a bit too loud even in sleep mode to keep on during the night - during and after a tropical rainshower the plumbing could not take it anymore, we accept that, but not the smell it gave inside the room. The positive: - free water sports, kayak, subs - kayak to the mangrove, do it yourself - breakfast at your own jetty - very good food, best value for money - sevice orientated staff all around taking very good care of you - daily plastic cleanup from the resort. Remember it is not their waste. They do anything to minimise the plastic footprint, even providing your own drink bottles - very clean rooms, great beds, amazing bathroom - only a short boat trip from KK away Terima Kasih Echoresorts :)

We stayed in a Breeze Villa which was on an ovarian walkway with catfish and marine life swimming around and underneath, just magical. Yes there was some pockets of ribbish in the sea but this is 2023 and it’s a worldwide problem- the sea was beautiful as you can see from our photos. I disagree with previous comments about the management being hands of; there was a staff member deployed daily to clear any stray plastic floating in the sea and the pool was spotless. The staff couldn’t be more helpful and the facilities, staff and experience was definitely 5*. We like to dine out and the food at Gayana is excellent. I am so impressed by Gayana, there is currently work being undertaken to update some of the villas but we were staying in a recently renovated villa which was beautiful - powerful AC and every amenity and provision you would expect of 5* resort, in fact our teenage daughter asked us to stop the staff from tidying end replenishing so often so she could laze around in the villa I disturbed. They really were so attentive. The villa was large and luxurious. We couldn’t have asked for more. The dive centre was excellent and whilst I am not one for spa treatments the spa building looked lovely and I can imagine having a massage with a sea vie is quite an experience. Karl and his team were amazing and I really can’t recommend this eco conscious luxury resort enough.
