We recently spent an excellent long weekend at Bunga Raya - and we loved it. The place is very family friendly, and our boys (10 and 8) had a blast with kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, snorkeling, and of course the zip lines. The wild life around the resort is spectacular (e.g., wild boars, horn bills, monitor lizards, monkeys, sharks, sting rays, schools of barracudas), and the service was overall great. It's a short hop over from Singapore, and a real gem away from the bustle of KK itself. Highly recommended!
My husband and I booked 4D3N at Bunga Raya resort and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The view was amazing and the sea was very clear. We booked a deluxe room and it is very spacious. The bed is huge, there is a linked TV room and even a bathtub (which was a pleasant surprise because I didn’t read it in their room description). It was a great getaway if you like nature and would just want to have quality time with your loved ones. The service was excellent and I must thank Fenellon and Clement for making us feel so cared for. The food was decent and I particularly enjoyed their grilled fish, fish fingers and tuaran noodles. Overall, a great stay. Do bring good insect repellent and cream because it’s an eco resort and you may get insect bites.
Description in the menu and actual food that came was different. And their concierge was not able to arrange for transport to send us back to our villa. End up we had to walk back on our own under the rain
We had a fabulous and very relaxing stay here at the end of our Borneo adventure. The resort seemed quiet and calm – it felt like we had the beach to ourselves a lot of the time – and we loved having a villa on the beach, particularly enjoying the refreshing plunge pool. The overall experience of being on the island, being on the beach, and having some lovely sunny days to just zone out before going back to the real world was really wonderful and each member of staff we interacted with was friendly and warm, which made us feel like valued guests. Our villa was very comfortable and nicely spacious although housekeeping was a little patchy at times, e.g. broken coffee machine, cups not washed/replaced, marks on bedlinen, no turndown one evening. The resort facilities are generally good and well maintained. We used the little gym by the beach, which was fine to keep us ticking over (although it was extremely hot!) and the spa was charming – we enjoyed some lovely treatments. It would however be appreciated if they could make some effort to repel insects in the spa waiting area though – the approach to appointment times and buggy service is quite relaxed and it seemed to be in those moments of waiting that I unfortunately picked up a lot of bites. The food was of a good quality at breakfast and in both restaurants and we enjoyed the selection of cocktails and drinks at the bar. It was great that drinking water was freely available for topping up your reusable bottle. We ended up being quite amused / disappointed by the wine list – we don’t necessarily expect to be drinking fine wines on these kinds of holidays but as there was a lot of fanfare about the resort’s amazing wine cellar, our expectations of having some nice bottles of wine were very high! However, when it came to wines we actually wanted to try, most of the bottles on the shortlist/specials list were just simply unavailable and when we ordered from the treasured “master list”, the wine we got was either off or unchilled (so undrinkable). We soon discovered that the only reliable choice was the house wine, which seemed a bit silly given the hype about the cellar! The main thing that we felt could be improved was the arrival and departure experience. The office where we caught the boat transfer was quite basic and unwelcoming (purely procedural transaction, no info was given about how long we would have to wait, no refreshments were offered, etc.) – it didn’t feel like we were on our way to a luxury resort. Once we got to the island, things improved a lot! Sadly the departure was worse though – there seemed to be some uncertainty about transfer timings and then, very unluckily, a huge storm hit just as we needed to leave. Clearly the storm was outside the hotel's control but it surely can’t have been the first time they needed to get guests to the airport during a storm. The boat transfer was frankly quite scary - not only because it was rough and wet but we weren’t filled with confidence when we saw that the guys were navigating using an iphone! I also sustained a bit of an injury when a metal rod meant to hold the plastic sides of the boat down detached and whipped inside the boat, whacking me on the arm. It clearly hadn't been attached properly and I can only be thankful it didn't hit me on the head! It was such a relief to get off the boat although then disappointing there were no towels or any other way to dry off in the jetty office - we had to wait until we got to the airport to get dry (we actually had to completely change our clothes) ahead of our 15 hour journey back to London. It was quite a dramatic end to our trip but didn’t detract too much from what was a delightful stay. We would consider returning one day and will just have to hope that the weather gods are kinder for our transfers next time!…
We arrived absolutely shattered after climbing Mount Kinabalu. Bunga Raya was the perfect place to relax afterwards. The staff were so welcoming and helpful. We spent the whole of the next day in and around our beautiful tree house Villa. The food was excellent. Edwardo looked after us so well for the special birthday we were celebrating. All the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Laurent the General Manager made a point of speaking to everyone at breakfast which was a nice touch. The villas were well positioned and private in stunning grounds. The infinity pool was great being a good size. Thankyou everyone !
7 days of blissful relaxation in a beautiful island setting easily reached from Kota Kinabalu. All of the staff were outstanding! Friendly and professional! The plunge pool villa overlooking the beach is fantastic position, superb accommodation and well worth the money. Food in both restaurants good and Great selection of both western and Asian dishes. Can’t wait to return!
This was the grand finale to our Walk on the Wild Side in Borneo. Having seen all the wildlife and jungle we had dreamed of we arrived by speedboat from Kota Kinabalu for 6 nights. We couldn't even see the resort from the sea - the only visible sign are the red sun umbrellas on the beach. This discreet, elegant resort is luxurious - but not in the pristine, polished way you may expect - the luxury here is the nature, the amazing lodges and the food - but most of all the staff and the service. Every member of the staff went the extra mile to make sure that we were happy, relaxed and enjoying the peace and quiet. The Zip Line is excellent and made us smile and the massage is divine. The Manager, Laurent, is a total star and made our stay very special indeed. We did go over to the sister property to sponsor a coral and having seen the location of the other 2 resorts on the island we felt we definitely were in the right place. We never return to a destination as there are many places to see - but, know what? This time we just might. Loved it.…
This is one of the prettiest places I have ever stayed in my life. The rooms were beautiful, the staff was super friendly, and very personable. They call you by name, and the general manager checked on us every morning at breakfast. They have learned to take customer service to the next level. The pool looks like something out of a movie or travel book. It is massive, and very clean. We spent a lot of time admiring it. As far as activities, we spent day 1 and 2 on the beach and pool. We then did a couples spa day (amazing) and did the half day jungle hike and snorkel with lunch. Very cool, and scenic. Our hiking guide was fun and informative. This resort is more scenic and secluded than the other two on the island because it is 1 bay further away, and looks out to ocean. The other two resorts partially face the city of KK, and we liked staring into jungle and ocean, and not towards a city. Only small critique to resort: have staff sweep the beach a few more times per day, because a lot of rubbish/plastic/waste washes up on shore. This is certainly not the resorts fault, but sad that some locals treat the environment that way. Regardless, this place is something out of a dream. I would recommend to anyone, and hope to get back someday. You will be sad when you leave because it is such a memorable time.…
15-20 min away from the mainland by speed boat. highly recommend for people craving for peaceful paradise. Everything in the island is expensive. need to buy drinks and foods in the mainland or at the jesselton port. Staffs provides high quality service and hospitable. I stayed this hotel for 4nights 5days , never got bored .(personally) …
This is a beach resort off the coast of Borneo reached by a 10 minute private speedboat transfer. check in is done at the hotel’s efficient reception desk at the pier in Kota Kinabalu. This is a secluded hideaway with a stretch of white sand on one side & jungle on the other. Villas are set into the hillside, spacious & nicely furnished combining modern luxuries with rustic charm & a private balcony with views over the bay. Whilst there are a few beach bungalows close to all amenities, the hillside villas generally require a golf cart to get you around the resort. The resort in early October was very quiet which meant the beach & pool areas were quiet & there were plenty of sun beds to choose from. The main restaurant served a buffet breakfast with a selection of breakfast meals cooked to order. A couple of restaurant options for the evening, prices here were a little on the expensive side depending on what you ordered. Beautiful lagoon to swim in and an offshore coral reef to snorkel over when the tide is high. There was an on-site spa but didn’t have chance to use it. Staff were very friendly & efficient. This was perfect place to rest & relax after 7 days exploring the Borneo rainforests.…
