The physical location and layout of this place is magnificent! In the heart of a colonial plaza area. Beautiful internal gardens. Rooms were impeccably clean and bright. The architecture of the hotel was amazing. Food was really delicious. We had pollo en mole and it was excellent.

We stayed one night at this hotel, it is spectacular. Rooms are spacious, with A/C to beat the heat wave that El Fuerte has, bathroom works like a charm too. The hotel has great hacienda rooms where you can find lots of antiques and nice places to relax, the pool inside the hotel is a nice touch to have a... More

When we booked a week in Copper Canyon, we intended to board El Chepe in Los Mochis. Fortunately, I ran across a blog that said board in El Fuerte instead -- and skip staying in a busy city and covering about 2 hours of unremarkable views before entering canyon country. We found Posada Hidalgo online, and although the "available room"... More

Having visited El Fuerte several years ago our expectations were pretty high. When I tried to drive into the parking lot and basically high centered because they didn't think to build a "moderate" grade. So OK I had to park on the street. I was told "your car is too low", its a 2014 VW Passat. We checked in. Was... More

Wonderful hotel. Beauty gardens. In well kept historic building. Very tasteful decorated. Dinner and breakfast were excellent. Highly recommended. Try to get a room to the inside. The rooms facing the street are little noisy.

El Fuerte is most famous for "no-see-um" biting bugs, and second most perhaps as the apocryphal birthplace of "Zorro" (himself a totally fictional character). Both reach their pinnacle at the Hotel Posada del Hidalgo. The hotel is an excellent property in an historic old hacienda building, well run by the Balderrama hotel group with special attention to international cuisine. The... More

We had the privilege to spend the night in the suite occupied by the owners of the hacienda, and enjoyed every minute of our visit. The grounds are beautiful, and the rooms very comfortable. The hacienda was supposedly the birthplace of the legendary Zoro, and there is a history available about the family. The buffet breakfast was freshly prepared and... More

Starting city for our trip thru Copper Canyon, the common areas were reminiscent of an old gran hacienda. We enjoyed being entertained by a colorful mast Zorro who as legend has roamed the area.Friendly staff with a very nice selection of red wine. The weak link was the spartan feel of the bedroom, the bath area was modernized.

This is a historical, colorful, centrally-located, and a bit overpriced place of stay at the nice little town of El Fuerte. There are lots of things to do around this town, and the hotel is very conveniently situated within walking distance from any part of town. There are many tours organized by the hotel management, and they are all quite... More

Loved this hotel, The entry, the colour, the ambiance, the staff, the food, definitely the Margaritas, the Hummingbirds, the gardens, our gorgeous guid who did the walking tour of El Fuerto with us and who also doubled as Zorro (loved him). Only had one night here before we headed off on the El Chepe Train and I would soooo love... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Posada del Hidalgo is a beautiful colonial mansion. This attractive structure was built in 1890 by Don Rafael Almada, a wealthy and influential "alcalde" (mayor) who spent five years and 100,000 gold pesos on its construction. The wooden trim was made from 285 Canadian red pine beams. Don Rafael's mansion was the largest and most beautiful in El Fuerte. It was built just below the old fort, and has four layers of brick and adobe construction. The iron work was brought from Mazatlan. ... more   less
