For many years we have been dreaming of conveying our intimate knowledge and deep love of one of the most remote and wildest places in Europe.
Finally the time is ripe and the "Samaria Experience" started running from spring 2014. In 4 days of activities centered around the village of Agia Roumeli and the gorge of Samaria you will get an understanding of what it was like to live in this beautiful but harsh place: how people lived and how they survived in almost complete isolation, what they ate, how they cooked. You will also discover the gorge of Samaria as very few see it: away from crowds and through the eyes of people who were born and grew up there. 5/5 This is a fabulous place to stay while in Agia Roumeli. The studios are clean and spacious and very comfortable. They are close to the beach. The hosts are very special people - very kind and thoughtful and there is a great deal on eating in their restaurant- which serves traditional Cretan cuisine: very fresh, generous servings and very tasty. This is our go to place when on the south coast
I had been to Agia Roumeli previously after hiking the gorge and I decided to come back and stay a bit longer. I chose Artemis Studios online as it offered a self-catering option. I was thrilled with my studio as it had an excellent small kitchen, large living area, two balconies, good bathroom, and a delightful mezzanine bedroom with a double bed and a single. It also had a sofa bed downstairs. This is definitely a good place to stay longer and enjoy the wonderful beach and hiking of Agia Roumeli. Very handy to the beach and restaurants but quiet as well.
My wife and I hiked the gorge and stayed one night in Agia Roumeli because of TripAdvisor reviews. GREAT decision. I am 58 and my wife is 55. We thoroughly enjoyed the hike, and couldn't have imagined leaving the same day as the hike. As soon as the last ferry left, the town was so quiet and the people were incredibly friendly. Artemis Studios was terrific. Eva was very responsive and helpful before our arrival. She answered my email questions timely and was was very helpful. When we arrived, we walked to the Artemis restaurant and a young man escorted us to the hotel. He was nice and, thankfully, walked slowly as we were at the end of our rope from he hike. At the hotel, we were met by Athena. Sweet. Smiling. Very nice. The room was super clean. Comfortable. Just perfect. We had a swim in the clearest water on the planet. Cool. Refreshing. Perfect after the long hot hike. Thanks Eva and Athena for making our stay wonderful. Highly recommend.…
One night during our 6 days hike from Loutro to Elafonisi. Very kind family, apartment comfortable. They washed our dirty clothes and everything was dry in the evening. Try their restaurant, very good !
After a day walking down the Samaria gorge the welcome we received at Artemis studios was just fabulous. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Our hostess Athena radiated warmth and hospitality, nothing was too much trouble. We also ate in the Artemis restaurant where we had a delicious meal to replenish our energy (and 10% discount). We booked Artemis ahead of our trip having read other reviews. We definitely recommend planning the walk in this way as we didn't have to rush to get the 17.30 ferry out of Agia Roumelli and could enjoy the gorge for all its natural beauty. We started at 11.30, missing the crowds, giving us plenty of time for photographs and just taking in the breathtaking scenery (we took a leisurely 7 hours).
I loved this place, it was spacious, very well equipped, super clean and comfortable with two balconies where you can watch the goats on the mountain or the ferries come in. It is so quiet and idyllic, with spectacular scenery. Athinia took such good care of me. I can't wait to go back!
A highly recommendable stay in this so peaceful place after hiking down the Samaria gorges. Very spacious and modern rooms at reasonable prices, perfect wi-fi, sand beach at 50 m.. And greek hospitality at it’s top !
Artemis Studios is a family business and what a lovely, generous and kind family it is. My husband and I ended up spending 3 months in Agia Roumeli staying at Artemis Studios. These studios became our home away from home that even after we had travelled to some Greek Islands we still returned. There are certain benchmarks to be met when booking accommodation: cleanliness, spaciousness, location, comfort and staff interaction. On all of these Artemis Studios was excellent. The wonderful staff ensured everything was fantastic and any issue was dealt with immediately. There is also the added bonus of Artemis Restaurant where the fantastic traditional Cretan fare was offered with a 10% discount to guests. We ate all our dinners here. For those travellers who wish to experience something a bit different, there is a four day progran offered called the Samaria Experience. We also particpated in this and highly recommend it. Agia Roumeli has the best beach and is protected from many of the winds from the mountains. We loved our stay at Artemis Studios!…
Eva and her family wonderfully accommodated our family of five (with three young kids) for two nights in their incredible village. We loved the spotless room, beautiful balcony out to the sea, but most importantly the personal touch. There's something about Eva that I loved. During the day we enjoyed an easy 10k hike up into the gorge and followed it up with a refreshing dip in the sea. We ate two dinners and breakfast at Artemis restaurant and enjoyed the fresh and tasty fare. We are well-seasoned travelers and give their place our highest rating. The final night we joined in the bread-baking BBQ for the Samaria experience. What a blast we had!
What a Beautiful place this is and the hosts were friendly and helpful. I don't know how many languages Eva speaks, I have heard at least three. You will get a real treat if you do the Samaria experience. You can learn so much about Cretan life in this tiny village, nothing you could ever get from a book. Roussos has so many interesting stories to tell. He is also a bee keeper and makes the best thyme honey I have ever tasted, and I love my honey.
