If you do not want to pay three times more to sleep at Dalen Hotel from 1894, then clean and home cosey Dalen B&B is a superb alternative. The rooms are relatively small, but everything is clean and sober with interior in a typical Nordic style. The host is up before you to make a real Norwegian breakfast ready before you enter the relatively small dining hall. If you are lucky the host will share some stories about Dalen and region around.

Just a short review of our single night stay at this nice B&B. It’s a little more than a B&B, our room was fine, clean and comfortable. Olivier the proprietor was the best! He is very well informed, speaks multiple languages, and gave us excellent, useful and true advice about places to eat, things to do or see on our intended travels the next day. Thank you very much!

Cozy clean room. Quaint host and very helpful in finding a connection to our relatives in the area! Nice Breakfast. He helped us get some hot water to make hot choc. and heat up some roomogrot as well. We recommend this place. No elevators... so stairs.

Definitely recommend staying at Dalen Bed and Breakfast! Oliver is very friendly and helpful with any questions about Dalen during your stay. Very clean and spacious room. We had and en suite bathroom, which was great! Would stay again on my next trip to Dalen!

Dalen is a small place so there wasn’t much choice when we planned our trip. However Dalen B&B was fine - clean and comfortable and with a very welcoming and thoughtful host. He was able to recommend where we could eat and the recommendation of eating at the harbour was great ( only weekend nights though). He also recommended walks and advised on the boats trips ( Dalen to Ulefoss and the bus back - it takes all day but really interesting and huge drops in sea level as you go through the locks). We also did a challenging walk up to Eidsborg which was steep rather than difficult but well worth it for the views and we caught the school bus back! All in all a good stay but we felt rather pricey.

Visited early May. Booked the balcony room which turned out to be extremely small. We’re travelling for 10 weeks and visiting climates ranging from 0 to 30c so have large luggage. Jan who checked us in suggested the bags wouldn’t’ fit in the room and offered the use of another room not being used for storage. This proved a godsend as she was correct. It was a case of the bags or us getting in the room. Apart from the room size the bath towels were little bigger than tea towels and way past their use by date. There was a hole in the sheet. This b&b is one of the most expensive we have stayed in in Europe. They get away with it as the only competition is a very expensive hotel. If you visit Dalen at any time out of season, eating dinner becomes a big problem. There is only one option- the hotel which only reopened at the start of May and is very expensive. This property has no lounge to relax in only the breakfast room. On a positive note, breakfast was ok without being anything special and Jan who checked us in and did breakfast was very nice.

We had a great stay here. The owners were so accommodating (and exceedingly friendly) when we booked at the last minute and then decided to stay an extra day. The location is convenient to many things, including being steps away from the trailhead to a hike to the West Telemark Museum (it will also take you by the cottage/farm of the two Rui sisters and Eidsborg Stave Church, with some good views in between). If you go to Dalen, this place is a solid option.

An merely OK place, but the only option in town to the much higher placed hotel. Overpriced, but adequate. Then came breakfast. Actually, it didn't come. The reason to be in Dalen at all is to take the ferry down the Telemark canal system. These board about 8:15 so one breakfasts then hustels down to the dock outside town. At the posted '7:30' breakfast hour the dining room was empty. I sat waiting until 7:45 )by which time another couple had arrived expecting breakfast.) Nil. We knocked on the door of the fellow running the pace several times, to no answer. He finally emerged about 7:55. Asked about 'breakfast', he said he " ...forgot." The fellow runs an overpriced B&B. The first B takes care of itself. It wouldn't seem too taxing to remember the second 'B' that had been paid for. Avoid this creep's place at all costs!

The B&B only has one competitor in Dalen, Dalen Hotel, and that hotel is very expensive, around 2300NKR for a doubleroom. So the B&B can take around 1000NKR for a double with chared bathroom. The standard on our room was like in hostels, ca 12m2. The room had two very small windovs. There was no heating, wastepaper basket, no aircondition in the room. When we went to bed we find out that a pillow was missing in one of the beds. In the bathroom there was no toiletpaper. We have to take this from a not occopied room! The beds was not so good but they were long, The breakfast was ok but the breakfast room was small. The owner was serviceminded and talked to every guest

We only stayed a single night as we passed through to take a boat down the Telemark Canal the next day. We should have arrived in Dalen by local bus, but when we changed at Amot they told us that only 4 passengers had booked, so they sent us in a taxi (free of charge) instead! That's how small and off-route Dalen is. Friendly welcome, room a bit Spartan (but this is B&B not a luxury hotel). We got a discount on our local restaurant meal at the pier by simply showing our room keys (as advised by the B&B owner). He suggested a nice walk back from the pier around the end of the lake, and gave us a leaflet with a map. We enjoyed the walk. We slept well, rose early, had a good filling breakfast, walked 10 minutes to the pier and headed off down the canal. All in all, a good useful B&B.
