We had booked in Papamata Lodge with Kathy and Neil before the Covid lockdown started and were fortunate to stay with them in the last days of "life before lockdown". Kathy was away and kindly let us stay at Paramata, Neil who apparently doesn't normally do too much with guests has been hiding his light under a bushel. We had such a great time, chatting and learning about the area and life on the west coast, Neil's sculptures are original, inspirational and tactile. Ask Neil to take you round the garden and beach, you may even meet Cedric (don't ask!) we felt truly at home.
To say that Paramata is comfortable is an understatement, such thought has gone into the design and building of everything that everything is perfect down to the finest detail, wood everywhere, much of it reclaimed reflects Kathy and Neil's attitudes to life and the environment. A large open plan kitchen and living room where we were made to feel very much at home. Comfortable bedroom with large comfortable bed and large bathroom allowed us to relax wonderfully. The library with a huge range interesting books is a great plus.
We spent our lockdown in New Zealand in Blenheim but could have been equally comfortable here.
It is worth a trip down the west coast just to go to Paramata.

Response from Paramata, Owner at Paramata Lodge

Dear Simon and Anne I should have thanked you sooner for this wonderful review that you have most thoughtfully written. Wasn't it funny how well this all turned out for all of us! I was sad that I missed you after hearing about the good time Neil had and how nice you guys were! That will teach me for going travelling and leaving him behind! We are currently wondering what has happened to you. Are you still in NZ and still in Blenheim? We'd love to hear from you. We're open again for business now after the lockdown. As you can imagine having loads of outside jobs to do, lockdown was easy and productive without any interruptions. Guests are now trickling back and they continue to love the place, while we enjoy the stimulating conversations they bring. Who knows how it will go. We are lucky to be able to be flexible and have no great concerns. We wish the same for you. Thanks again for the review and we look forward to hearing from you. Kathy....... & Neil

The Perfect place to get away from it all, relax and soak in nature on long walks and peaceful evenings. From the moment we arrived, Neil & Kathy were delightful Hosts, wonderful to talk with, as they also gave us our privacy. Their home is art you live in, with incredible views from all of our windows, which were plentiful! Long walks on the Beach, never seeing anyone else, only seals and also sheep & cows along the road to their home, it was spectacular!! Kathy made excellent breakfasts for us each day, and we enjoyed our delicious dinner & wine, everything tasted incredibly fresh! Their company, a true gift. A special part was walking through their enormous yard, and glancing out a window, to discover beautiful sculptures & artwork, some take your breath away, others make you smile & laugh. Neil, who is so kind and gracious, is the artist!!! He has an amazing gift, and thankfully, it's there for us to enjoy and be inspired by. This is the perfect place to get away from every day life, release the stress and enjoy life fully. That reminds me, the bed & bedding was fabulous, we slept fantastic every night, we really caught up on our much needed sleep.
We look forward to returning again soon!!
Thank You Neil & Kathy!!!

Kathy and Neil have created a bush clad retreat that isa pleasure to visit. Both are interesting people in their own rights and we had some wide ranging conversations together. Bedroom is comfortable and spotless and we had a lovely home cooked meal there. Highly recommend.

My husband took me away from Christchurch for the weekend and we spent our first night with Cathy and Neil at Paramta Lodge. They were wonderful hosts. Our bed was so comfortable, and the bath before bed bliss. Breakfast was about as homemade as it gets and it was beautiful.
I highly recommend Paramata Lodge for the discerning traveller.
Have dinner either with Cathy and Neil, OR go into Ross to one of the local pubs for a local meal - they'll point you in the right direction.
Located about 4 hours drive from Christchurch, and then only 1.5 hours drive to Fox Glacier.

We spent two nights at Paramata Lodge as part of our two week tour of the south island, and it was the most special housing of our entire trip. Owners Kathy and Neil are the ultimate hosts, accommodating our hours and whims with grace and charm. Rooms are quiet and luxurious, casual breakfasts are scrumptious. We especially enjoyed the personal walks with Kathy where we learned about the birds and plants. Kathy is an excellent cook, and we enjoyed fresh veggies from their gardens and a roast that competes with the best we experienced in New Zealand. Our teenage daughter especially enjoyed the goats, dog and chickens that are part of the experience, while we adults enjoyed discussing gardening and nature with Kathy and woodcraft and local history with Neil.

My husband and I stayed only one night at Paramata Lodge - an unscheduled stopover en route from Central Otago to Nelson. Kathy and Neil couldn't have been better hosts. Our room was beautiful - spotlessly clean, fabulous bathroom - gorgeous view across the garden, to a stand of native bush. This place is a real haven for road-weary travelers. Both Kathy and Neil are well-informed about the local area. This was a totally unexpected highlight of our two-week South Island trip and we would most definitely return - we were so sorry we were only able to fit in one night's stay. I would definitely recommend this to anyone - it's away from the more well-known 'tourist-traps' and if anyone is keen to get a decent night's sleep, the only thing that might bother you is the sound of the Tasman Sea! We loved it.

Paramata Lodge: The Good and the Not-So-Good

We visited for three days in February.

The Good:
We spent three delightful days at the Paramata Lodge (Feb 23-25), which has fabulous public areas and layout: roomy, looks out at wonderful gardens, well designed, with lots of light. The owners are delightful: Cathy (teacher and expert in local nature) and Neil (expert in recycling metallic scrap, AND loves to play chess!).

Perfectly cooked yummy full breakfast. Good internet at no cost. The large bed is super comfortable and spacious. Outside the upstairs bedrooms there is a large library and sitting area.

Wonderful kayaking (one person each), both up into the marsh, and down to the sea. The sea (has massive breakers) and beaches are a 5-to 10-minute walk from the lodge via fields and marsh. You will need to walk through a shallow sandy stream for the ocean access and to the kayak storage area).

Good access (10K) to Ross. There is excellent food at Ross at reasonable prices at the Empire Hotel, plus lively social life. Ross has an interesting shaded walk associated with the past gold mining (1-hr return) a few blocks down the road, as well as shops and a museum.

The Not-So-Good:
Two of the three guest rooms are upstairs. They become hot during sunny summer days. Drop the blinds during the afternoon and evening; consider opening the door at night. The upstairs combination of western exposure, limited ventilation (the windows open only a few inches), plus random visits from mosquitoes, can be difficult to handle. There are no screens. Keep all lights off at night when trying to cool your room.

Therefore go for the downstairs Rakahore room, which is more sheltered from the western sun, and has a door to a deck that expedites ventilation. This room has pleasant views of forest, mountains and pastures. The more expensive upstairs rooms have the sea view.

The optional dinners are $70/person, which does not include wine. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase; do not bring your own.

If you’re traveling on the West Coast treat yourself to two or three special nights at this unique lodge. The accommodations are extremely comfortable – very spacious bedroom and bathroom, great shower with a lot of water pressure, and a wonderful deep bathtub with a beautiful view. The peaceful country setting is very special, and it’s an easy half mile walk to a totally private beach with miles of a beautiful beach for walking or kayaking. The meals are memorable with homemade bread, produce fresh from Kathy’s garden, and food prepared at a level that you’d expect at a very fine restaurant. The owners, Neil and Kathy, are entertaining and Neil’s carvings and metal art leave you feeling like you’re staying in a warm and treasured art gallery.

This is a wonderful purpose-built home stay just outside of Ross, south of Hokitika. The three rooms are luxuriously appointed, all en suite. There is also a lounge for the guests who are also welcome in the living room of the home. Wireless internet is free. Kathy and Neil provide warm hospitality and an excellent breakfast. Kathy is an excellent guide for the nearby walks on the beach and through the rainforest. The two cats and Pup-pup the dog provide an additional welcoming committee. Neil's sculptures surround the home. Great muesli and very fresh eggs provide by the chicken on location. You will need a car.
