The Mexican highlands between Mexico City and San Miguel Allende are an undiscovered rural paradise. Rancho Las Cascadas, built by a Swiss woman who fell in love with this area and never left, was my basecamp and home away from home. The Rancho caters to Americans, Europeans, and other world travelers. I traveled solo from California - safe and easy. The Rancho picked me up at the Mexico City airport, and at the Rancho I met interesting and friendly fellow visitors from Germany, England, and other parts of the U.S. The first question each morning is what would you like to do today? Some days I ventured out on horseback, then enjoyed a cerveza in the hot tub in the late afternoon, watching the sun go down over the cascadas - the waterfalls at the back of the property. When you are riding you will feel like you are in a Western movie - the high desert terrain stretches out before you for miles, with no fences. One afternoon I relaxed with a hot stone massage - excellent and surprisingly affordable. I took a day trip to San Miguel Allende, two hours away. (The Rancho provided a driver and guide.) This vibrant, artsy, colonial-era town, with a magnificent baroque cathedral, is filled with cafes and restaurants. The artisan market makes for excellent shopping. I bought a well-crafted Mexican wool rug. Because it has attracted a good number of American retirees, many of the shopkeepers speak English. It's OK to haggle at the market! I took a waterfall hike - it turns out the waterfall at the Rancho is one in a series of three and you can meander a path along the creek through green meadows to see them all. I also took a mountain bike ride through the corn fields and sunflowers. I stuck to the flats but there are climbs for more ambitious riders. Doing nothing is also encouraged. I spent one afternoon just sitting by the pool reading a book. There is good WIFI here but you can resist the urge and really unplug. You set the pace of your vacation here. Other guests opted for visits to Tula and nearby archeological sites. This is rural Mexico - not a tourist-filled destination. It helps to love animals, as the Rancho has horses, barn cats, and chickens. (Hint: don't get between the rooster and his ladies!) The Malinois dogs Cookie and Callie are well-behaved and loving, and befriend all guests who offer to give them some petting. Once you introduce yourself you will likely find a Malinois stretched outside your door in the morning, waiting to give you a wag of their tail to start your day. The package I bought was all inclusive so I did not have to worry about paying for meals or drinks, and I had no worries as they are very careful to filter the water and cook things carefully so foreigners avoid "Montezuma's revenge" gastro upsets. The owner of the Rancho has put her heart into designing and building this place over the past 20 years and you see her love for Mexico throughout, and in the smiles of the local people who work there - the wranglers, the cooks, the gardener. If you want to truly relax, spend a week here like I did. Great solo, or with a group. If you are the kind of traveller who likes to stack up locations, you can spend a few days in Mexico City, a few days at the Rancho, and a few days in San Miguel Allende - making a nice arc across this part of culturally rich central Mexico.

Property's Favorite Review
Words cannot describe what a special place the Rancho is to my daughter and I. I also hesitate to write yet another 5 star review for purely selfish reasons…I want to keep this special slice of heaven a secret. If I could give 10 stars, I would in a heartbeat. We weep tears each time we leave, but know our next visit is already on the books. It started several years ago, when my daughter was interested in going to a horse ranch to learn how to ride. It has now come to mean so much more each time we visit. It is the most special bonding experience I have experienced with my youngest daughter. Hence, why we keep coming back year after year. Thank you Jenny, Max, house staff, and all the talented wranglers for another amazing riding experience. It’s the only place where I can truly unwind. The grounds, the amenities, the food, and especially the horses are truly magical. We are always part of a small and intimate gathering of guests from all over the world. It’s no wonder that each time we visit, we meet other repeat guests as well. We are so glad we did not go to one of the many commercially advertised ranches in the US. Hasta la vista Ranch Las Cascadas!

Just spent 4 terrific nights at this beautiful Rancho! Seemless service from reservation process to arrival. Celebrating my Birthday with my favorite things! Horses, massage, yoga , hikes, pool oh yeah & open bar! Can’t forget my new favorite dogs Cookie & Callie and the wonderful charro - Joseway (hope that is close to spelling ) along with Hugo that took care of selecting our horses to setting up - well anything that we wanted to do. Both relaxing & exciting, like staying at someone’s beautiful hacienda - well it kind of is - cheers to Uschi for creating such a wonderful place!

Our family loved every minute of our time and didn’t want to leave! The riding accommodated both our 8 year old beginner and 17 year old advanced rider—cantering through the open space was a favorite for all. The food was exquisite, local and real and delicious. The pool area and hot tub were beautifully detailed and peaceful. All the staff were wonderful, warm and personal and helpful. The kitchen staff kindly served dinner to our youngest early every night so he could go to bed. We can’t wait to come back!

Feeling unsure about a riding trip? Whether you are old, young, a virgin rider, or an experienced one, the ranch will not disappoint. I was meeting a riding friend and from being promptly picked up right at the arrivals, we spent the 2 hour drive catching up and choosing our faves from our last visit. Our first ride didn’t disappoint. February being dry we wanted forward horses, I had Tequila (on the ride and after!) my friend had Broncho, doing what she did last time, promising me I’d love to ride him then not letting go!

Visited the Rancho summer of 22. Family of 4 and another family with us. Communication with Jenny in preparation for the trip was easy and she was very responsive and helpful. We arrived and felt welcome from the start and that the staff was all intent on making our vacation great. Max and his team of ranch hands were acutely attentive to our desires to ride and to properly match us with horses appropriate to each of us. With children in our group it was comforting to sense and see their alertness and abundance of caution regarding the safety of our younger riders. The rooms were wonderful, the grounds were beautiful the food and service were on point and the rides were based on what the group/s were asking for and capable of. I have no doubt that some of the other offerings of tours, massage, yoga, cooking etc would all be excellent experiences as well, but our group was all about time in saddle and Rancho las Cascadas can offer that very well. For us, this was a trip to remember for a lifetime but hopefully we can make return trips to build even more memories in the years to come. We felt very attended to and loved very much the setting, the people, the horses and the rustic beauty of the Mexican highlands. Thank you to Max, Jenny and the team assembled by these two and the owner. The ranch hands, cooks and all service and team members were absolutely wonderful and made the experience amazing. Can't wait to return. Thank you all!!!

An all around wonderful ranch experience. The horseback riding was great. Horses were very responsive. I started out slow at the beginning of the week and then by the end of the week was on one of their fast one. The terrain was beautiful and a lot of wide open spaces to run, no nose to tail riding. The food was the best Mexican food I have ever had and every day it was different. You were even able to request food options. I ate everything, but they accommodated just about any guest dietary needs. The ranch is located in a remote area that was very peaceful. Their yoga/meditation building was the best I've ever seen. I started each day doing yoga listening to the birds and waterfall, they opened it up every morning for me and lit oil candle urns surrounding the room, so peaceful and relaxing. My girlfriend and I stayed an entire week and was so happy we did so we could experience everything they had to offer. Hikes to three different waterfalls, excursions to San Miguel, which was 2 hours away, and another excursion to an outside market that sold everything, that's where we got boots, belts, western shirts and a lot more. All excursions were guided by Max who was not only a great guide but also a personal shopper. We told him what we were looking for and he took us to the best shops, he also carried all our bags :) If you are looking for an all around great ranch experience in Mexico this is the place to go. Oh yeah, the open bar is nice. It is helpful to know some Spanish.

I truly had the best vacation at Rancho Las Cascadas! The experience is like no other ranch I have been to. Each morning for breakfast you can choose from a variety of tropical fresh fruits and authentic Mexican breakfast. We are then greeted by Max who arranges the horse rides based on levels. I rode the adorable and fun Valiente! I was captivated by each ride! The first rise we were taken in we went through a rolling bed of water and then approached a whimsical road surrounded by beautiful green grass, fresh corn and two adorable miniature donkeys who greeted us. During our ride we take a break so the wrangles can check every ones saddle. Coming from the riding world, I truly appreciate this and the safety they provide. After riding a bit we are able to get a snack within the town and the horses get a break. The people that are in the town are so kind and happy to see us. Lunch and dinner at the ranch is wonderful. Each meal is gourmet experience! If there’s a special Mexican cuisine that you would like, you can request that if they have the ingredients in stock. Max and Jenny truly are the heart of the ranch! They answered all our questions. Max took us in two excursions and we had an absolute blast! We told him what we were interested in purchasing and seeing and he know exactly where to take us. If we had a specific type of trail ride we wanted to take he helped with setting that up with the wranglers. Jenny was an absolute doll! She is so outgoing and fun! She gave explained to us all the areas of the ranch and opportunities that we are offered. The yoga room is absolutely gorgeous, in the mornings before our rides we would go stretch there. Unfortunately, I wanted to be with a Horses any moment I could so I did not partake in any type of yoga. The wranglers were amazing, and allowed you to watch them tack up and answered any questions you had. I did not wanna leave my vacation, I actually wanted to take the horse and two dogs back with me!! If you have the opportunity to come to this ranch definitely book it, you will not regret your experience!!

I cannot express what a wonderful time we had here. My husband wanted to ride horses and I was so happy just to hang around. The ladies showed me how to cook. The food was amazing and the architecture should be in a magazine. I would 100% go back. My husband loved the horseback riding as well.
