#1 of 4 B&Bs / Inns in Montigny-la-Resle
Crowning a hill in the renowned winemaking region of Burgundy, Château de la Resle has the charm and personality of a well-loved private home. The six elegant rooms and suites are taken care of by Dutchmen Johan Bouman and Pieter Franssens, who invite guests to share the French, ivy-wrapped manor house they painstakingly restored. Adding to the feeling of romance and exclusivity is Johan and Pieter’s personal collection of contemporary art and design, which attracts fellow connoisseurs from around the world. From the château, which sits on the edge of an 800-hectare hunting forest, there are bucolic views down the valley of Montigny la Resle. The wine village of Chablis – that gives its name to one of the most famous white wines in France – is also just a short drive away. Exploring the area is a delight, but guests are equally happy to unwind at the château’s spa, soak in the azure pool, or relax by a sizzling open fire with a glass of the château’s own Chablis.

A great hotel in an area deprived of good offerings. Johan our host was friendly and knowledgeable, booking us excellent restaurants and recommending brilliant day trips including local wine tasting and sights. The swimming pool/spa area is idyllic and a great place to unwind after a half day degustation! Hotel is full of great modern art especially the one of the surf boards!

My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic 3 night stay at the Chateau! I had seen this beautiful property featured in Vogue magazine years ago and it was on my bucket list - so glad we booked our stay.......Johan was an amazing host - nothing was too much trouble - whether that be local tips or booking us lunch/dinner locally, planning day trips. The chateau is absolutely beautiful - presentation and artwork throughout. Simply stunning! P.S. Tip - we closed the front door as instructed, perhaps somebody else didn't read the sign and the cat slipped in.... It is not an indoor cat but enjoyed it's night with us in the loungeroom rolling on the rug as we sipped local Chablis wines. Very memorable.

A true gem in Chablis region for a relaxing and home-feel stay with Johan and Pieter’s property. Everything is perfectly prepared in high quality while still allowing guests full flexibility to adapt to individual preference. It’s not a “hotel” so those reviews below seeking hotel style setup is simply a mismatch of expectation. Cant say enough nice things about this place. Will definitely come back and recommend. We stayed two nights as a group of four in two rooms near the pool. Lovely!

I am surprised by the number of five star reviews. This hotel is an SPG property and part of the Design Hotels brand, so perhaps I expected more than a plumped up chateau with minimal amenities. The on-site restaurant advertised on the website is little more than a single room adjacent to the pool and it was not open during our weekend summer stay. The house is overly designed but lacking basic amenities. We were upgraded to a suite on the third floor but the only ac was a stand alone unit with a large tube out the window, requiring the window to stay open at all times bringing flies by day and mosquitoes at night. The hosts are quite charming and welcoming, but this is more like staying at an eccentric uncle’s house than a Design Hotel experience.

I am sorry to hear that your stay did not meet the expectations our website and the reviews from our other guests might have given you. I have never seen myself as eccentric and even less as an eccentric uncle, but if that means “being different than the masses” I am happy to accept it as a compliment. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain our concept once again, especially since Design Hotels, Starwood and Marriott are now one big company and we are getting more and more guests who are used to large standardised hotel, which I have often referred to as “sleep factories”. At Château de la Resle we offer maximum privacy with only 2 rooms and 4 suites in a privately owned burgundy château. This does indeed limit us in offering basic hotel amenities you might be referring to, such as a 24/7 reception desk, night guard, bar, business centre, bellman or concierge desk. We do however provide the services these people would offer, but in our own personal way. At the same time we do have a lounge with fireplace, daily breakfast buffet, honesty bar, large heated outdoor pool, sun terrace, sauna, hammam, gym, gardens, electrical rental bikes, on site massage service, organic room amenities , pen/paper/envelopes in the room, shower caps, shoe polish, minibar/kettle/Nespresso machine in each room, hairdryers, tv, free internet, a wealth of tourist information of a region that we call home, free parking, luggage trolley, fax machine, central safe, credit card payment and probably some more. The suite you stayed in even has a small private kitchen that is fully equipped. As for the restaurant, we mention on our website that we cook a Table d’hôtes dinner for our guests every Saturday throughout the high season if a minimum number of guests are willing to participate. This means that I share my passion for good and honest food with guests by preparing a full dinner in our bespoke show kitchen. It is indeed located in the building next to the pool, with a chefs table in the kitchen, a dining room upstairs and a terrace outside. Although it’s been 7 months since you stayed with us I do remember I had to cancel dinner that evening as only two couples wanted to stay in for dinner. We don’t want to push on site consumption and fully understand if our guests prefer to go out for dinner and enjoy French gastronomy elsewhere. However, the essence of your review is not about ticking amenity boxes. It is about the experience we offer and weather this meets your expectations or not. We know our limits due to small scale of our operations. We compensate this by offering maximum privacy and personal attention. As contemporary art collectors we love sharing our passion for art and design with our guests and give them the feeling they are sleeping in a small museum. Looking at the great comments we get we are confident that our somewhat eccentric concept is appreciated by most of our guests, I am sorry you were not one of them.

While my review is long overdue (we visited Sept of 2017), it is important to me that others know how AMAZING Chateau de la Resle is. We came to the Chateau as an escape from Paris for three nights and it could not have been a better experience. Peter and Johan were the most endearing hosts who really love what they have created and it shows. Every detail from the organic toiletries to the original art displayed throughout the Chateau and her grounds. I fully believe they have found their calling by creating the most beautiful retreat. If you are lucky enough to be there on a night when dinner is an option on property jump at the chance to enjoy. The rooms were impeccably clean, the recommendations of the surrounding areas were exactly what we needed & breakfast was a delight down to how it was displayed. Peter and Johan have painstakingly thought of every detail and it shows beautifully. I long for the day I am able to go back and deeply breathe in the magnificence of Peter and Johan have created and so lovingly share with others.
