I went originally in 2008 to Las Animas Baja Spirit Ecolodges to swim with the whale sharks and wanted to share the experience with my daughter and 12-year-old granddaughter. My granddaughter was a bit timid to start but with encouragement from her mom (my daughter) she conquered her fears and was swimming alongside these huge, amazing creatures, diving for clams and oysters and snorkeling every day.

Las Animas is a very remote location requiring a 6 hour drive down the Baja peninsula from Oatey, CA and then an hour ride in a boat. Our wildlife guide, driver and all-around nature resource was Steve Sanders. Hs is a retired Environmental Science teacher and is very knowledgeable about all things Las Animas. Each day we went in search of whale sharks and found them. We went out in 1 or 2 boats, captained by Tomas and Julio. We went to a quiet bay to dive for clams and oysters. We swam with sea lions and snorkeled in a variety of locations. Many people in our group would fish each day which takes me to the food.

The main cook was Liz and she worked wonders with all the fresh fish and shellfish. We had sashimi style fish, ceviche, fish soup, fried scallops, giant clams, and fish prepared in every way imaginable. All delicious. I celebrated my birthday as did one other member of the group of 7 and Liz had a special birthday cake for each of us. Happy hour every night with margaritas, fresh guacamole and all kinds of tasty snacks. Grace helped in the kitchen, served the meals and kept our yurts free of tracked in sand. Yes, yurts! Very comfortable.

If you want dark skies, this is the place. The Milky Way was incredible. We saw shooting stars. Bio luminescence in the water was magical. We saw evidence of a turtle coming on shore and digging multiple nests. We saw dolphins, flying fish, rays jumping out of the water and sea turtles. The sunrises and sunsets were breathtaking. As my granddaughter said, This is a once in a lifetime experience.

This was a g reat trip. The eco lodge was located on the beach in a remote bay in the sea of cortez. Boat access only. It is a series of private yurts and a common hospitality and dining yurt. The setting is stunning. Kevin is an extremely gracious host as is all of the staff. The food was terrific often fish that the boat captains caught the moning before we went out looking for the elusive whale shark. You could come here just to relax. If you are after an up close encounter with a whale shark this is where you will find it. Best for strong swimmers who can keep up with the shark as it lazily moves through the waters which at times can be choppy. Non simmers can also enjoy good views of the shark from the boats as they swim just below the surface. This location is in a desert climate so be prepared for hot weather and intense sun. No AC but fans and ice cold margaritas mitigate the heat. Would recommend to family and friends.

Do not hesitate to book with Baja Airventures to go beyond the typical whale "watching" trip. The whales actually come up to the boat and seem to want to hang out with you. We can't swim with them, but the whales are curious and seem to want to be touched which is an absolutely AWESOME experience. We were able to be with the whales multiple times and the accommodation where we stayed in Guerrero Negro was very convenient and lovely. Our guide, Kevin, throughout the trip was kind, patient, knowledgeable, safety conscious, hard working and delightful to be with. It seemed like 24/7 he had our best interests at heart. And as an English speaker first, he was very fluent in Spanish, which I am sure made our trip much more smooth. The stay at the eco-lodge in Los Amimas was peaceful and beautiful. Amongst interesting birds, sea lions, varied desert plants, etc. the yurts were well designed and the food was absolutely amazing and accommodating to any dietary restrictions presented. I would highly recommend this trip.

My family recently returned from one of the best family vacations we have ever had. If you like remote beautiful locations that offer pristine waters, animal encounters, fabulous food with a warm caring staff, this is the place for you.
After a beautiful drive down the Sea of Cortez and an hour boat ride to this secluded location, you arrive to a private bay in the Sea of Cortez with 8 Yurts. ( really nice ones) No crowds here. We were the only people on this particular trip. Our Yurt was a family yurt with running water and air conditioning, we didn’t need the air though. It was super clean and cozy.
Our days were filled with hikes, digging for clams, fishing, ( catching tons of fish within an hour) , swimming with sea lions ( so fun!) and kayaking. What ever you wanted to do. Or you could relax in your hammock and take in the view. All so relaxing.
The food doesn’t get any fresher. Theresa and Liz prepared 3 meals a day and a delicious happy hour treat with all the fresh foods of the Sea. There ceviche was the best ever! 5 star meals for sure! And the best margaritas.
Tomas was an amazing boat captain. Took us wherever we wanted to go safely. Could navigate through the toughest of waters.
And Kevin, owner and operator and our guide this
trip was incredible. Friendly, knowledgeable and a delight. We felt like everyone was family by the end of our stay. The icing on our cake was the humpback whale we saw when boating back to Bahía Los Ángeles at the end of our trip. Amazing! Thank you all including Dianne and the puppies who made this trip so special for us. We will never forgot the experience and joy brought us.

Dear Lisap and family; We are so excited and pleased to hear about "one of the Best Family Vacations we have ever had." Connecting as a family and sharing this special experience will provide memories for you and your family for a lifetime. Your great description of the truly unique and special place we are blessed to share was excellent. The new road that stretches along the western shore of the Sea of Cortez indeed does provide an appreciation for the stark beauty of the contrast of the great Sonoran desert, and mountains, meeting countless beautiful emptey beaches and clear blue water coves. The vacation adventure and incredible sights truly does begin long before arriving in LA Bay and your scenic boat ride to Las Animas. We take great pride in providing comfortable, clean and amazing beachside yurt lodging as our ecolodge. Of course dining is a key element of our all-inclusive package. So glad you enjoyed the fresh seafood ( some that you caught) and classic Mexican dishes. Our Margaritas are world-famous. And of course sitting on the deck of the main lodge on the beach with no one else around, only sea lions, dolphins and birds is special. When guests like you and your family join us it's a great reminder to Kevin and the staff why we too love this special place and are blessed to be able to share it. Thanks again for your visit, and awesome review and for sharing your tales of Baja Spirit and Las Animas Ecolodge with your friends and associates. Much gratitude.

This trip was just what I needed not only to relax among the calm of the water but to experience the most epic, intimate, breathtaking adventure by literally swimming along side whale sharks and sea lions. Every day we went out, we saw whale sharks.
We also had the opportunity to hike just off shore and hunt for our own clams in which we enjoyed during happy hour.
The Yurt was large and clean, bed was very comfortable, there was plenty of space between Yurts to make it a private experience. When we went their was no running water, yet we were set up with a daily wash basin and a warm portable shower. The trails surrounding the property provided incredible views.
The food was top notch! Breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and drinks were all included and was some of the best authentic, fresh food I’ve ever eaten while on vacation.
If you like a little adventure in a remote, magical setting, desire to relax on a hammock, drink a few cocktails and meet new people as you dine in a community setting then I highly recommend going on this trip. Worth every penny.

Dear Stephanie, we appreciate your detailed comments and reflections on your snorkeling with whale sharks and sea lions trip from our Las Animas ecolodge on the Sea of Cortez. Many people do not realize the unique nature of our combination package experience. Where everything is truly covered. There is nothing to buy. As you mentioned, every excursion, cocktails, quality delicious food, incredible setting, beachside lodging and just being so far off the grid, are all part of this special soft ecp-adventure vacation package. Most resorts charge for every little thing you do, and then you must share it with hundreds, if not thousands, of other people enjoying a beach vacation. So, what is the value of having a pristine, totally inclusive wilderness vacation to yourself? As you said, “it’s worth every penny”. That's how 99% of our guests feel. A common comment is, “It was unlike any other eco-adventure vacation they’d ever had.” We invite you to come back from January through April and experience the Best of Baja Gray Whales, Dolphins & Sea Lions” trip, where you can get up close and maybe even pet these friendly Gray whales on the Pacific Coast. Then you transition across the Baja interior and see the UNESCO World Heritage National Park with the some of most amazing desert plants and wildlife in the world, and then experience las Animas Ecolodge again in the winter when it's still warm and nice. The average daytime temperature in March is 75F. You then have a chance to see blue and Finback whales, the largest in the world, many other marine species, and countless other unique wildlife. The Midriff Islands region where Las Animas Ecolodge is located is called the “Galapagos of Mexico” because it is so pristine and remote, with many plant, bird, marine mammal, and reptile species unique to this area—some you only find in the Galapagos and here. So, there is no need to travel to the other side of the planet; just come back and visit us. Our business, like most, relies on happy repeat customers and referrals. Thank you in advance for sharing your comments and photos on social media like Facebook and other online platforms. With gratitude, team Baja’s spirit

We just returned from an outstanding trip by Baja AirVentures that included upclose and personal whale watching in Guerrero Negro Lagoon and then a senic van trip across to
Los Angeles Bay where we took boats to La Animas Eco-Lodge. The acommodations Both in Guerrero Negro @ Casa Laguna and Las Animas were great. Great rooms, food, staff and service. Our guide, Kevin, was very knowledgable, helpful and had a good sense of humor and our naturalist, Nancy, did an excellent job of educating us on the plants, animals, history and many other details of interest during our trip. Kevin Warren, who owns the company, was friendly, very professional and took care of all the details that came up. We would give these folks 5 stars+++. We plan to tell our friends and relatives about Baja AirVentures and will book another trip with them in the future. Best, Jim & Jennine

Mucho gracias Jim & Jennine for your heart-felt comments and accolades. Much appreciated by all of us. Although we have been in the Baja soft eco-adventure space for 30 years, and are often so involved with planning, logistics, management, and all the work to run safe fun trips, we sometimes forget the "quality of life" difference we are making as a team for people like you both. Thank you so very much for your kind words and advocacy. It helps keep us engaged and dedicated to strive to be on of the best ecolodge and tour companies in Mexico and beyond... Our business like most relies on happy guests, referrals, good reviews and word of mouth advertising like this. So you sharing here, and with friends and relatives, and coming back is a win/win/win for all. Don't forget that as one of our alumni family you are entitled to great alumni return discounts and referral discounts. You could even have Las Animas all to yourself with your friends and family this Fall for a Ultimate Whale shark, dolphins and Sea lion experience with as few as 10 people and save a bunch of money too... Please call my brother Kevin Warren to find out more details. If you have any photos or videos to share we always deeply appreciate that. Saludos, Team Baja AirVentures

When Covid-19 hit, and the border to Mexico was closed in March, 2020, our trip was cancelled. We had purchased trip insurance, but the insurance policy did not cover a pandemic. When I contacted the owner, Kevin, the week our trip was scheduled, he said that he would see what he might be able to do. We didn't know if that meant a refund, a credit, or some other accommodation. However, he never contacted us again, and never returned any of our calls. I understand that the pandemic has been devastating for small businesses. But I find it very unprofessional that Kevin didn't contact us in any way after we had paid thousands of dollars for this trip. (P.S. I only gave a review of 1 because the field was required.)

Dear Leslie and future adventure traveler, I want to clarify the accurate chronological unfolding of your trip - that YOU canceled per your doctor's recommendation - and the email you sent us only five days before the scheduled departure. We did not cancel your trip. We did everything possible per our STANDARD AGREEMENT FOR CANCELLATION and relevant to a global pandemic that was breaking out in March 2020. Let me lay out the actual chronological details. On January 31st, 2019, you and your husband booked a trip on our popular Best of Baja Whales, Dolphins, and Sea Lions trip for March 23rd, 2020. You signed our standard booking and cancellation agreement which clearly states in writing that there will be no refunds for cancellations 90 days or less from departure. For small-group international travel, these terms are very standard. We highly recommend that all guests purchase travel insurance because you never know what can happen with your life 15 months later. On January 26th, 2020, you signed our TRAVEL INSURANCE WAIVER acknowledging that it is your sole responsibility to purchase or not purchase travel insurance. You did check the box it said: “I DECIDED TO PURCHASE TRAVEL INSURANCE.” Little did we know, or anyone else on the globe, that a little over a year later, a global pandemic would ultimately shut down not only the US and Mexico border in April 2020 but all international travel was impacted too. Not long after your booking and deposit, and your signature of our standard cancellation agreement and the travel insurance waiver, we sent you our standard pre-departure information packet with all the details about packing, food, lodging, weather, and everything to help make your trip enjoyable. We've been running trips to Baja, Mexico, for over 30 years, so our booking, communication, and cancellation trip procedures are very standardized. FEBRUARY 2020: As the coronavirus started to take hold at the end of February, you can imagine we received many phone calls, texts, and emails from clients, including you, concerned about the coronavirus, especially for trips upcoming in March into April. Everyone was concerned and unsure what would happen because the CDC was responsible for international travel and who could go where. ON MARCH 17TH, we emailed you and everyone else that was going on upcoming trips an URGENT CORONAVIRUS UPDATE FROM THE CDC and that we could not predict what was going to happen with the border, the CDC, and any restrictions. STILL RUNNING 3/23 TRIP: We also indicated in that 3/17/20 email, “At the moment, we are still planning and running our trips and will be responding to the CDC and government recommendations and restrictions as they evolve to support the health and safety of our guests and staff.” WE RESPONDED ACTIVELY to you and many other guests’ concerns DAILY about trips via phone calls, emails, and texts. ON MARCH 18TH, you sent us an e-mail that said, “Dear Kevin, I saw my doctor today, and she said that she doesn't think I should take this trip. Bill and I are very sad to have to cancel; we've been looking forward to seeing the whales for over a year”. So your TripAdvisor statement that the border was closed in March 2020 and your trip was canceled is inaccurate. YOU CANCELED YOUR TRIP. We ran that 3/23/20 whale-watching trip you canceled, and our guests had a great time. We are truly sorry you missed something you've been looking forward to for a long time. We understand. We have been in tourism for over 30 years, helping people have soft, eco-adventures of a lifetime. It's sad for us when people must cancel their trips. That is why we insist people sign the travel insurance waiver and recommend getting travel insurance. Little did we know, as well as the rest of the world, that we would be entering a global health pandemic, and the travel insurance companies would not cover a global pandemic…. We did everything we could to accommodate you and stayed in contact with you until your cancellation and after that for a while. And when we have angry guests who are not getting what they want, even though they've acknowledged and signed documents that clearly state our cancellation policy (which is standard in the industry), we can only do so much. To summarize for you and anybody reading this, we were professional and courteous throughout the whole process, including a very stressful time for the travel industry. We regularly communicated with you and everyone else throughout the process and followed our standard booking procedures. I recommend to the readers of this that they also check out the over 160 four- and five-star reviews from global travelers like you who have had a trip of a lifetime. Call Kevin today, and you will find him available, helpful, and friendly. Sincerely Team Baja Spirit/ Baja AirVentures

This is an experience like none other. Kevin Warren loves sharing the beauty, peacefulness, and adventure that the Sea of Cortez and Las Animas provides. This is such a unique experience through and through. We went for the Whale Shark trip, but not only did we get to swim with whale sharks, we frolicked with sea lions, fished every morning, kayaked and were served amazing meals 3 times a day. Even though we started the trip not knowing the other guests, we ended the trip feeling connected to folks from many different walks of life—we all had a common connection, desire to embrace the remote environment. Kevin provided a wonderful tour of a nearby estuary and is a wealth of information about the area and he loves sharing all he knows. Kevin’s staff was outstanding! Liz, Tere and Erik were hard working with the desire to see that everyone was comfortable. Tomas and Omar are amazing boatsmen and know the waters so well. Oh yeah, did I mention the margaritas! Happy hour was a great way to start each evening. Many thanks Kevin for such an incredible journey. We are looking now at other trips you offer with hopes of broadening our Sea of Cortez experiences. Grateful!

Thank you for your wonderful description of your remote adventure at Las Animas Ecolodge on the Sea of Cortez. It's hard to believe that something so radically unique, different, and remote is close to busy Southern California. Having lived in hectic Southern California myself, it's hard to find the peacefulness and the unique experience you had with Kevin, our lodge team, and fellow eco-adventure seekers. That's our goal. To provide unique and fun-filled experiences every day, at whatever level our guests want. As you can see, there is certainly a lot to experience. We love that you and many others come down to have the snorkel with whale shark experience but find out there's so much more with the snorkeling with sea lions, the abundant fish catching, kayaking countless points and bays, and having it all to yourself with a small group of like-minded travelers. Of course, delicious eating and world-class margaritas in an incredible remote beachside location are part of our one-of-a-kind experience. And as you stated, connecting with many people, often from all over the world, who share a love for nature and remote environments, is a great fun bonus. Many people leave with new best friends. We would love to have you join us again. I recommend our “Best of Baja Whales, Dolphins, and Sea Lions eco-adventure from February through April. You will have a chance to get up close and sometimes even pet these amazing gentle Gray Whales. You'll also get to see the West Coast of Baja and an abundant National Park in the center of Baja when you cross over to the Sea of Cortez, filled with exotic cactus and plants found nowhere else in the world. Then you revisit Las Animas for more remote adventures, wildlife, and nature. Bring your friends with you, and you'll get a thank-you referral discount from us, plus an alum discount to save even more. You could even refer other friends from nearby Southern California who can do the whale shark snorkeling this fall and which gives you a discount for your Gray whale trip with us. Thanks again for your wonderful comments and review and for sharing your tales of “The Best Remote Adventure Ever” with friends, families, and associates. With gratitude, Team Baja Spirit

In September, Kevin Warren (owner) transported us to his ecolodge (large yurts) at the edge of the Sea of Cortez, surrounded by National Park. Kevin, an adventurer and attentive host, has been doing this for years and has stories to back it up. The lodge is off grid and close to nature but has everything you could want. Our trip had great weather and we hiked, fished (with licenses), exercised on the beach, gorgeous sun sets/rises, enjoyed Kevin’s singing and guitar playing, kayaks, swimming, wind surfer. The staff was excellent and the food fresh and wonderful. What most of us came for were whale sharks. They are not guaranteed but with good weather and diligence we found them every day. Amazing creatures. In addition we swam with sea lions, collected clams and oysters, saw a fin whale and pods of playful dolphins. Our group of 11 were interesting and lovely companions. Given the opportunity I would definitely do this again.

Baja Spirit is/and has been our go to resort in Mexico for at least 10 years.
The adventure begins in San Diego and the final panga trip from Bahia de Los Angeles to the camp is exhilarating. If you choose to relax and do next to nothing or participate in any or all of the activities, you can. The yurts are large and comfortable and provide you with anything you may need. The food…tasty and home cooked. If you catch a fish, it will be served for dinner.
Highlight for us was a nighttime bioluminescence experience! Polka dotted Whale sharks too.
Can’t wait to return for our 4th visit!

Dear Adrian I am grateful to respond to your excellent description of our ecotourism resort and ecotours on the Sea of Cortez. Many guests and we can relate to your summary of the majesty of the desert mountains meeting the abundant sea of Cortez as heaven. We appreciate your description that the adventure begins in San Diego with the scenic drive across the mountains, into the desert, and along the beautiful sea of Cortez. And then the boat ride out to Las Animas Ecolodge is not only exhilarating but filled with opportunities to see countless sea birds, islands, deserted coves, white sand beaches, and most likely seals, dolphins, and maybe some whales. And, of course, during the fall, the opportunity to see the largest fish in the world, whale sharks, is amazing. Few people know about the nighttime bioluminescence experience, where the water can light up in bursts of rainbow light and colors from fish swimming through the water, dolphins jumping in the air, your hand splashing the water, or even your glowing footprints walking on the deserted beaches. It is truly a magical experience that few people have had. It is great guests like you that come back time and time again and share their adventures and experiences with friends that we so deeply appreciate. Thank you so much for being a guest. We look forward to having your friends and family visit any time. With deep gratitude, Team Baja Spirit

We were there in FEB this year before the virus travel restrictions and had an outstanding experience, we gave them 5 stars out of 5. You need to check with them directly about availability. The owner is Kevin Warren, a very nice man. Just Google Baja Air Ventures to find their website and contact information.

Yes Defnjeb the deluxe yurts ( and all the yurts) come with two beds. They can even fit 3 beds in the deluxe yurts because these buildings are huge. Plus with the loft over the bathroom, there's lots of room. When are you traveling and with how many people?

Greetings Valentin. The best time to see and get up close to whale sharks in Baja, Mexico near us is August - beginning of November. You are right December is too cold. Here's more details on our special whale shark trips. We have a 100% success rate in seeing and swimming with whale sharks in our own very private location, free from lots of tourist. Seeing 4 - 8 in a 1/2 day outing is not unusual. Can you travel in those months? WE still have many ideal dates open still. My personal preference would be mid Sept - Beg. of November because the air temp is cooling down but the water temp is delightful. Feel free to call Kevin @ 800-221-9283 or 1-619-421-2235 for any questions and check availability. All the best, Tourism Tim
