When Covid-19 hit, and the border to Mexico was closed in March, 2020, our trip was cancelled. We had purchased trip insurance, but the insurance policy did not cover a pandemic. When I contacted the owner, Kevin, the week our trip was scheduled, he said that he would see what he might be able to do. We didn't know if that meant a refund, a credit, or some other accommodation. However, he never contacted us again, and never returned any of our calls. I understand that the pandemic has been devastating for small businesses. But I find it very unprofessional that Kevin didn't contact us in any way after we had paid thousands of dollars for this trip. (P.S. I only gave a review of 1 because the field was required.)

Do not hesitate to book with Baja Airventures to go beyond the typical whale "watching" trip. The whales actually come up to the boat and seem to want to hang out with you. We can't swim with them, but the whales are curious and seem to want to be touched which is an absolutely AWESOME experience. We were able to be with the whales multiple times and the accommodation where we stayed in Guerrero Negro was very convenient and lovely. Our guide, Kevin, throughout the trip was kind, patient, knowledgeable, safety conscious, hard working and delightful to be with. It seemed like 24/7 he had our best interests at heart. And as an English speaker first, he was very fluent in Spanish, which I am sure made our trip much more smooth. The stay at the eco-lodge in Los Amimas was peaceful and beautiful. Amongst interesting birds, sea lions, varied desert plants, etc. the yurts were well designed and the food was absolutely amazing and accommodating to any dietary restrictions presented. I would highly recommend this trip.

We just returned from an outstanding trip by Baja AirVentures that included upclose and personal whale watching in Guerrero Negro Lagoon and then a senic van trip across to Los Angeles Bay where we took boats to La Animas Eco-Lodge. The acommodations Both in Guerrero Negro @ Casa Laguna and Las Animas were great. Great rooms, food, staff and service. Our guide, Kevin, was very knowledgable, helpful and had a good sense of humor and our naturalist, Nancy, did an excellent job of educating us on the plants, animals, history and many other details of interest during our trip. Kevin Warren, who owns the company, was friendly, very professional and took care of all the details that came up. We would give these folks 5 stars+++. We plan to tell our friends and relatives about Baja AirVentures and will book another trip with them in the future. Best, Jim & Jennine

Mucho gracias Jim & Jennine for your heart-felt comments and accolades. Much appreciated by all of us. Although we have been in the Baja soft eco-adventure space for 30 years, and are often so involved with planning, logistics, management, and all the work to run safe fun trips, we sometimes forget the "quality of life" difference we are making as a team for people like you both. Thank you so very much for your kind words and advocacy. It helps keep us engaged and dedicated to strive to be on of the best ecolodge and tour companies in Mexico and beyond... Our business like most relies on happy guests, referrals, good reviews and word of mouth advertising like this. So you sharing here, and with friends and relatives, and coming back is a win/win/win for all. Don't forget that as one of our alumni family you are entitled to great alumni return discounts and referral discounts. You could even have Las Animas all to yourself with your friends and family this Fall for a Ultimate Whale shark, dolphins and Sea lion experience with as few as 10 people and save a bunch of money too... Please call my brother Kevin Warren to find out more details. If you have any photos or videos to share we always deeply appreciate that. Saludos, Team Baja AirVentures

I went to Las Animas Lodge the last week of October. Our group also experienced the extreme winds that made getting to the lodge an all day adventure and we only got to swim with the sharks two days. However this is adventure travel and you need to be prepared for unavoidable things like weather! Instead of complaining about things that cannot be changed, make the most of what you can! The staff at the lodge did everything they could to make the week unforgettable. Yes the trip down was long and very bumpy but Kevin kept everyone positive and talked about the landscape we were passing. The trip was not all that fun but was part of the experience that I will never forget. The food at the lodge is wonderful and they get you involved by having you make your own mole sauce and salsa. They somehow manage to accommodate all the different dietary needs of the guests. Kevin makes the best margaritas as well! The yurts are basic but clean and comfortable. Get up early and take in the absolutely gorgeous sunrises that occur every day. And be ready to be loved to death by the camp dogs Toby and Chaco! The only reason I gave this a 4 star rating is because your activities are completely based on the weather which can be unpredictable. But whether you are swimming with the giant whale sharks, hiking through the desert, or hanging out in the yurts or lodge, take the time to appreciate where you are and the people around you! Kevin and all the staff make this a wonderful place to visit!

Many thanks Kathy for your recent visit, understanding the vast realm of mother nature possibilities and just having a healthy and flexible attitude about "complaining about things that cannot be changed, make the most of what you can!" This give one more choice in adventures, travel and life in general.... Our goal for the last 31 years has always been to provide the most unique, natural and positive experience in a magical midriff Island regions of the Sea of Cortez, the Gray whales experience of the Pacific side of Baja, plus a chace to see the amazing diversity of the abundant Sonoran desert and mountains. Sounds like you got to see and experience more than most, and appreciated the diversity and contrast of the Baja. We are adding more diverse local activities that allow guests to have fun and adventure no matter what the weather or Mother nature is doing. See you again in Baja.

My friend and I arrived on Oct. 21, 2019. I am an avid snorkeler and have snorkeled in Fiji, Curacao, and the Big Island of Hawaii and other places. I had contacted the owner, Kevin, privately to comment on several things but received no response. Before I begin I want to say, "I like to leave glowing reports", but as other travelers have helped me, I too like to be honest. The positives: Jorge made great food. Not as much fresh seafood as I was hoping, but the rest was good. America , the lovely lady that kept our yurts tidy was very nice. Carlos, one of the guides was quite good. Ritchie that helped out around camp was so sweet. Samuel our boat driver was good at his job. Suzy and all the folks were wonderful to come sing and dance on our last evening to celebrate one fella's birthday. The location is supremely gorgeous but isolated. I have dreamed of snorkeling with whale sharks for a long time and chose this company on purpose based on reviews. Unfortunately: due to Santa Ana winds our trip was very compromised. I realize the owner cannot control the weather but a mention in his trip information might let you know that it could affect your trip....a lot. His website did mention that no refunds for weather, but silly me, I was thinking rain, not wind. Due to the wind, we had a 5 hour van ride over extremely bumpy roads that were undergoing construction. At least one hour of the ride was off road in sand so it was like four-wheeling in an 11 passenger van with the guide telling us, I've never driven this before! He did a great job but it was a wild ride. Our boat trip was shorter but we got to the lodge at dusk. The 2nd boat was guided in with a flashlight. They did provide nice sandwiches and bought drinks for us in the van, which was nice. It was a long long travel day for sure. Kevin, the guide who had only been at camp for 3 weeks obviously was not a snorkeling enthusiast. We'd be in the water for 15 minutes and then he would call us in. The ONE day we got to go look for whale sharks, he did let us stay in the water till the shark left. Yes, that's right one day to go see whale sharks. VERY DISAPPOINTING! He also allowed one guest to stay in the water the whole time while the other 5 of us had to take turns getting in the water. Kevin had given the speech about only 4 in the water with one shark but he let this man stay in the whole time. I had braved the small plane ride, scared of those, the 5 hour van ride, paid extra money as this is really only a 4 day trip, only to see a whale shark one day! Kevin apparently isn't used to safety in the desert...you don't go hiking at 9:30. I live in the desert and even just for walking, we leave by 7 to beat the heat. One day he said oh we'll go snorkeling at 5:00 PM. I've never gone snorkeling at 5 PM unless I was doing a night snorkel. Sure enough, the group snorkeled 15 min. and came back. I timed them. From the time they left till they got back was 45 minutes total. One lady said oh we were in the water about 15 min. Newsflash, I don't put all my gear on for 15 min. Yes, the water was cold. I borrowed a wet suit for the one day we went to see whale sharks. In October the water is COLD! Fortunately the wind died down a bit so for the return trip we only had the 2 and one half hour van ride. I was glad I had filled my Nook with books as most days there was nothing to do but sleep, read, or just hang out. One day we did go to see the sea lions, but again 15 minutes in the water then out. Other than whale sharks this is not a snorkeling destination. There is no reef so there are few fish and little variety. Kevin the guide seemed to think we wanted to snorkel in cold water with few fish NOPE. In fact one fella said why are we here there's nothing to see. Guide Kevin needs to realize people come here to see the Whale sharks and be in the water with them. Everybody in our group would have happily gone EVERY day to swim with the sharks! Maybe I'll get to go to some part of the world and see whale sharks someday, but it won't be back to Baja AirVentures Las Animas Wilderness Eco-Lodge. Oh yes, I paid extra for a deluxe yurt only to be told to not use the AC. So I didn't. Feel free to ask me questions.

Dear Cropsis from Utah; Thank you so much for your recent trip with us. Kevin W., the owner would have loved to speak with you directly to address your comments. But unfortunately he was having some temporary email issues recently. We apologize. This is not up to our high standards. So glad you enjoyed the yurts, food, camp staff, guides and the extra effort our staff makes to make this a special experience for all. We go to great efforts to create a positive, fun and comfortable experience in those areas we have some control over. Yes, the Magic of secluded Midriff Islands in and around Las Animas ecolodge is amazing. You said it perfectly, “The location is supremely gorgeous”. The pristine nature undisturbed away from any lights and humans is why so many travel with us – even though it can be a journey to get there. We always have to work with Mother nature and do the best we can, because nobody knows exactly what will unfold on weather. The week you spent with us is the same exact week that winds of over 85+mph ravaged all of California with unprecedented winds, fires and massive evacuations. In the 30 years we have been in the Baja adventure travel and ecotourism business, we have rarely had a trip as compromised as much as yours due to high winds. We will never compromise safety on any trip or any excursion because of waves, rain or WIND. This is why you had less opportunity to snorkel. High wind that week created dangerous waves not only making finding whale sharks difficult, it also makes the water more turbulent and much colder due to deep cold water upwelling. Normally the waters in October are around 78 - 80F. In late October, our desert temperatures next to the ocean, even in midday, rarely exceed 85F. That’s why our desert walks, no matter what time of day are great. Kevin the guide on your trip, is Wilderness first responder certified and a seasoned guide with years of global experience who works with us because he loves the location and ocean too. We made the safety decision to do the transfer to Las Animas Ecolodge via the back road and shorter boat trip in the sheltered bays because we were not going to compromise safety. Again this is backup plan to get you to the lodge. We never have had to drive this road in 30 years on a whale shark trip. The staff seldom has to drive this road because we seldom have winds like that in October. The reality is that in highly rural areas in Baja, there are very few paved roads. Yes, this is a dirt road, that can be rough. Yes, we are very remote. That’s why people worldwide love us. I know that the guide was making every effort to get you all to the lodge soon because of the weather and it was getting late in the day. We apologize that it was rougher than normal transfer. It is unfortunate that weather prevented us from doing the normal daily whale shark excursions. We too always seek to maximize our daily whale shark, snorkel with sea lions, whale watching, fishing, desert walk and more – depending on what mother nature is doing. Most global travelers who seek the pristine eco-adventure experience understand we must go along with mother nature and find the best way to enjoy and appreciate her, no matter what is presented. Thanks again for your visit and sharing your opinions.
