We visited the Red Lion in August during the government Eat Out to Help out scheme. The first two times were good. The menu wasn't particularly varied but we had steaks and salads which were very good. Unfortunately, we visited August Bank Holiday. We had been told that they had several hundred covers that day so were going to be busy, Luckily we got there midday so were served quickly. However, it got slightly busier and thats when the problems kicked in. The family sitting next to us walked out in disgust having complained repeatedly to the staff about the poor service .They had not had their meals, having waited nearly an hour for them. They ended up speaking to the manager and quite rightly refused to pay for the drinks they had. It wasn't that busy and the menu was quite simple. Mostly bugers and salads. So nothing complicated to turn out.. Also, a large family group were milling about freely between tables and should have been told to stay seated. We had to move tables to get away from them, There was no social distancing between the tables and staff were not wearing masks. Our waiter also got our order wrong. His colleague had to come out and ask whether we wanted our starters and mains at the same time. We have found in the past at the Red Lion than that when its quiet things are generally ok. It only has to get slightly busy and the wheels come off. I must say their Covid resrictions did not fill us with much confidence. In all honesty, what they had in place wasn't that much different from pre-covid days. They should have spaced the tables further apart, insisted people stay seated and had staff wearing masks/visors. It think that they were so anxious to reopen and recoup losses they got greedy and left the same amount of tables in place. We won't be going back in a hurry. Its a shame, as it could be a really good pub/restaurant.

Dear Peter Many thanks for your review. We reopened the pub & restaurant on 29th July, feeling that it would best to wait and understand how other pubs and restaurants operated in the area. On Bank Holiday Monday it was indeed very busy, the customers you speak of, who were not served, I dealt with personally, this was one of three service issues that day, which were dealt with very quickly. All of our food is cooked from fresh and the menu, though not our usual size, had burgers, steaks, salads along with additional signature dishes. You have said that there isn't much difference to post-covid days, we have a total of 7 tables less inside the pub and restaurant, all tables are at least 1m part with chairs pulled out, we have a one way system in place for customers. With regards face coverings, at the time of your dining, staff were not required to wear them. We have also had (like most pubs and restaurants in Hillingdon) unannounced visits from local licensing, local police and external auditors to check on our covid compliance, and have passed all with flying colours. Unfortunately, we consistently tell customers to keep to social distancing, this is a very high priority here, but we cannot police customers all of the time. We rely on our customers to help us and use common sense. I can assure you that we were in no way anxious to re-open, indeed, we only reopened bedrooms on the 1st September. And there is absolutely no greed whatsoever or any attempt to recoup losses after closing for many months, this would be an almost impossible task. I am very sorry that you feel so strongly that you will not return in a hurry, but as you can see form other reviews on this platform and others such as Google and Facebook, we are highly recommended. Kind regards James

I stayed at the Red Lion for 5 nights whilst working in and around London. Check in was quick and efficient, an excellent room, large double bed, sofa table and chairs and a desk for working. Unfortunately due to covid restrictions the room was not serviced during my stay, I did some cleaning myself in the evenings. The restaurant and bar was well run, staff were friendly and efficient and food was excellent. Beer was also excellent - Fullers Bitter. I had breakfast on 2 mornings and once again excellent food and service. Room was remarkably quiet given a busy road nearby. A very comfortable stay and I will stay there again if working in that area

Lunch today was "ok". I booked a table for 3 15 p.m., and the main course didn't arrive until past 4.00 p.m. (although I wasn't in a hurry). The "half-chicken" must have come from a very small bird. I should have asked for additional gravy. The Eton Mess would have been nicer, and generated better profit margin, with less fresh cream and more meringue. But it was all tasty and the staff were very pleasant and attentive, with rigorous attention to Covid infection control.
