We were recently enroute to Wales so we thought we would break the journey up with an overnight visit to a real castle. We weren't disappointed the place is stunning and we wished we could have stayed longer, we will return, very clean. We went to the medieval banquet and really enjoyed it and we got into the spirit of... More

You don't need to be a member of YHA to book, It's £2.50 less if you are though. This is a fantastic castle - 12 Century and supposed to be haunted. But we couldn't find any spooks! LOL It's warm - surprisingly for such an old place. Staff are fantastic and friendly. It's just great value and located in a... More

Stayed for one night in the oubliette. Decent shower rooms and everything was as clean as can be expected in a 12th century castle. Booked on the banquet night which was a different way of having an evening meal. We all enjoyed the alternate experience and the food was good and plentiful. I would recommend this. Vegetarian option was brill!... More

Thank you for your lovely review. It is great that you enjoyed all our activities and extras. Where better to loose an arrow than a proper Medieval Castle?! We now have a small shop in the village only a stones throw from the Castle selling cheeses and specialist pies (all supplied locally from Cinder Hill farm just below the Castle),... More

What can I say? Enormously helpful, friendly and efficient staff, comfortable rooms, great extras on offer and bacon for breakfast every day. And it's a real castle! With a medieval banquet if you're lucky with timings. Perfect!

Thank you for your lovely review. We never get tired of seeing the look on our visitors faces when they arrive and realise that we really are a real Castle, with over 900 years of history and many original features contained within our walls, and they are going to get to explore and sleep in it! It makes me smile... More

We have just spent a lovely 4 day family holiday at this hostel, which is a fabulous historic building - a true castle together with moat (no water). We're YHA members and have used many hostels across the country but this one is very special. This is no ordinary building and the youngsters in the family were thrilled to explore... More

We are really pleased that you had a fabulous family break at the Castle. It is always a thrill for us to see and hear our younger (& often older) guests delight as they discover our hidden secrets and realise that they really are living and sleeping in over 900 years of history. We hope to welcome you back in... More

Lovely room, friendly and helpful staff, and an excellent medieval banquet. Self-catering kitchen small for the number of people using it. Only one kettle which wasn't enough. Either need more kettles or a hot water dispenser. The price for a 4-bed family room was £64 per night, but I notice that this price has gone up a lot to £89... More

Thank you for your feedback. We always really value hearing back from our guests about their experiences to help us improve for future visits. I apologise that you experienced reduced facilities whilst self-catering. The shortage of kettles and other equipment has been addressed, but sadly this has not been in time to benefit our half term guests. Thank you also... More

My family have just enjoyed a fabulous break at St Braivels YHA. The castle sits in the most stunning scenery that England has to offer and guests are immediately drawn into the history of 12th century dramas that the building has born witness to. Its an old building with creakey floors and doors that slam but that is part of... More

Thank you for your lovely review. We agree that the Forest of Dean and the wider Wye Valley is a beautiful hidden gem and one definitely on a "must do" list of areas to explore; whether walking through ancient woodlands, experiencing the tranquillity of a canoe trip downstream or soaking in the culture and rich heritage of its numerous Castles... Although tucked away up high in a small, but smart village reasonably close to Tintern Abbey this is a wonderful place to stay. Sadly due to the YHA's habit of targeting and earning much from group booking (i.e kids/schools) it is hard for ordinary solo members to get a bed here - try a Sunday night when there is often... We are really pleased that you enjoyed your recent visit to our hidden gem of a hostel. Regrettably with only 8 bedrooms and being such a popular destination (there are not many places you can sleep where a King of England ate his banquet 800 years ago!) we admit that we can be tricky to book into. If only we... More

It is fantastic that you enjoyed your recent visit to us Jonathan. We really are a destination where you step back into a time before technology (King John just did not plan ahead for wifi or mobile phone signal strength when he built his banqueting wing did he?!) We look forward to welcoming you back through our gates soon. More

I loved staying here. The castle is so atmospheric. It is ghostly. Everybody I met was enjoying staying in the castle. There was a medieval banquet while I was there, very reasonably priced. There were medieval costumes to dress up in.

It is great that you loved your experience with us. We agree that the Castle really is full of atmosphere; whether you decide that it is a 'Harry Potter' Hogwarts replica (with beds in window alcoves and candles suspended in the dining hall), a 'Disney' Castle (with Princesses at the top of the towers and knights on patrol), or a...
