We experienced a bitter sweet time with Gold. What began negatively, was quickly resolved by senior managment and generously compensated. To begin, Gold is a large resort and I believe this should be reflected in the name of the hotel as we were mislead by 'Beach House and Spa'. Our original room had hot water issues which took over an hour to resolve during the evening, resulting in a late arrival to dinner. This then led to our buffet dinner being cold. Further, the entertainment is atrocious. I personally do not believe a 5* hotel should even have entertainment. A simple playlist of jazz or any relaxing music would compeltely change the atmosphere of dinner time from tacky to sophisticated. Instead of this, we were met with a live singer that I'm sad to say was very much below average. He would also play a terrible key board melody over the music which was quite frankly laughable at times but also disapointing when trying to enjoy dinner. The whole set up was cringeworthy and led to us eating out to other hotels for dinner (despite paying for half board accomodation). As we were so unhappy with the start to our stay, we asked to leave the hotel after the first night. As a refund was not guarenteed due to booking through Hotels.com, the manager graciously offered a significant upgrade. This is where our experince was turned around. We were offered a jungle villa with a plunge pool and personal butler. This provided privacy, and peace and quiet away from the terrible evening enterainment. We are fully aware that this is an expcetional situation due to COVID-19 and therefore it was at the managers best intertest to retain our business. Nonetheless, this upgrade made the world of a difference, and led to us having a lovely time at Gold. Our butlers, Ramadhan and Kadijah were fantastic. Firstly, Ramahan was absolutly superb. He was attentive, thoughtful and went above and beyond. He would even organise our taxis to and from the hotel when leaving for dinner at other hotels. He transformed our stay and this will not be forgotton. Secondly, Kadijah was also delightful and thoughful. If we were not at breakfast, she would call us and ask if we would like breakfast brought to us - exceptional service. All in all, what began negatively and below expected standards, was transformed into well exceeding our expetations. Thank you to the hotel manager for being more than accomdating to us. It has been highly appreciated.

Ocean suite facing the sea. The suite was similar to a villa ,with a porch in front and a pergola to lounge in anytime of day. Considering the circumstance ie coronavirus situation, this was one of the hotels that did not close down and expect their guests to move somewhere else at the last minute. There were a minimum number of guests when we arrived ie 13 guests. We were all looked after as if the hotel was still functioning at its best.The towel attendant, housemaid, swimming pool staff ,spa, and best of all the kitchen staff.They catered to our every need.The full breakfast buffet was set up daily until only about 6 guests remained. A huge thanks to the kitchen staff as well , the waitresses, Muana, Mohammed our evening waiter,Ramadan all the super helpful staff. Another big thank you to Chef Sunil,Chef Kia, Chef Ryan,they all made this an incredible stay. I promised all at the hotel that as a way of thank you we would definitely be returning when the world opens up again and we can visit. We were blessed to be in such a beautiful place at such a difficult time but I shall always rave about this place to everyone.I call it the island of smiles.

We stayed for 1 night, group of 6 family members on 27 February (3 rooms). Overall this was a poor experience made especially bad by our expectations based on what we paid. At £350/night/room, this was an expensive mistake. Pros and cons: Pros - really nice beach. Albeit the distance from the sea is huge so you cant sit around and hear the waves - nice pool area - large size with decent length for swimming - good wifi, available in all public areas and room - grounds are pleasant to sit in - relatively well maintained greenery on a big plot - big rooms which include sofa and a varanda area with more sofa space Cons - most staff don't speak or understand English. Very difficult to communicate. I've stayed in other hotels in Africa and not had this issue before, so this was an unexpected challenge - food was not labelled in the restaurant at all for breakfast and part-labelled for lunch and dinner - as a vegetarian it was frustrating not to know what we could and couldn't eat. And asking the staff was a waste of time due to their limited understanding of english as noted above. Good hotels not only normally label the food but also list ingredients. This was a very bad dining experience - air conditioning did not work in two of the three rooms we had between our party of 6. Unacceptable and when they 'fixed' it there was no change - phone (to contact reception) did not work in the room so we had to walk back and forth from reception - room was advertised as sea view which we paid a premium for. But the room is set 300metres from the beach and view is almost wholly blocked by the building in front (room 403). Room is really missold (see picture attached) - open bedrooms/bathrooms mean no privacy when going for a bath or shower - Had to pay for margarita despite being all inclusive. I'd expect basic drinks like this to be included - quality and selection of food is pretty poor for a 5* hotel. I've had better in 3* hotels - not much atmosphere at the hotel despite being full at dinnertime - generally unhelpful or moody staff. I misplaced my sunglasses and asked a member of staff in the restaurant, who sent me to ask at the bar, who then sent me to the pool bar, who then sent me back to the main bar and then to reception. I'd expect good staff to take it away and ask around for me rather than sending me on a wild goosechase - we had 10 mins foot massage included in our rate. 3 out of 6 of us did not want the massage do we asked if the 3 who wanted it could extend to 20 mins instead. This was refused. Strange when it should make no difference to the spa staff whether they do 60 mins for 6 people or 60mins for 3 people

We've just spent a lovely week in this beautiful hotel; the location of which is at the northern end of Zanzibar Island. From the UK, it's not the easiest journey to get there, however it is well worth it. The island itself is a lush green, with beautiful beaches. There is a warm welcome on arrival, the service here was great, from the minute we arrived until the minute we left, everyone really wants to help. We had a couple of things that we needed help with, the service was always prompt. Our room was lovely, huge bed, with netted curtains that were always turned down nightly, along with the room being sprayed and a couple of mini biscuits. Standard of cleaning was high. We paid £300 extra for the sea view, which I felt was worth it, we could see the sun set over the sea from our window.We were part of the all - inclusive offer, there was a good range of cocktails, wine and food included. The food was of a high standard across all meals, all self-service/buffet. They have pool/beach nights twice a week , where the food is awesome, bbq fresh fish, meats and much more. The pool was always clean, with spare sunbeds around. The beach is a beautiful white sandy beach, with sunshades, and loungers (the beach guys were great - they'd help you choose were to sit and set our your towels for you), they even provide a beach bag in your room for use on the beach. There is a drinks service on the beach from 10am onwards. We also made use of the spa on a few occasions, Jane and the team there are very good, we had the full body massage, luckily there were some special offers on a daily basis. We had an amazing holiday here!!!! (Evening entertainment was fairly quiet and similar on most nights, that suited us).

Very pleasant experience. We have private villa with private beach. There is a guard at the beach. Staff is good. Food is nice. Everything was good. Maybe cleanness is what is missing. The beach chairs was dirty and bathroom was not so cleaned as I have expected.
