We experienced unseasonal rains on our two week safari and everywhere was abundantly green, with roads like rivers, and animals everywhere. We were just so fortunate. With the rains though came in insect plagues, and lights at night attracted dense 'swirling clouds' of fine insects that got into every nook and cranny. Not the most comfortable experience but the hospitality sure made up for it. Great little duplexes, well appointed with ensuites and a safe in every room. Cute little monkeys playing on the veranda which overlooked the National Park. Once again, this hotel was in the National Park which made for easy game drives morning and evening, and an abundance of all creatures big and small. Absolutely stunning location, food was good but not great, hospitality was good but not great.

Trying to understand the rave reviews. Yes, the views of Amboseli grassland and Kilimanjaro are a available. Staff very friendly and try to help but often seem to know very little about the workings of the lodge. Or they just dont mention things... Our room is terrible. Small for two people, what I mean is that there is little space to move around or put belongings. Hot and stuffy! One window that can be opened. One. No cross breeze available. Even the ceiling fan is so awkwardly placed that you only feel it when you stand right beneath it. Shower water became so hot that even when we turned the hot handle off water was too hot to stay in. Dont get me started about the door lock and key situation. To begin they gave us only one key. Finally got a second. The door will not stay closed unless it is locked. So you have to lock it with key from inside or it will drift open. If one person leaves and uses key to,lock door from outside there is then no way to open door from inside. Hell of a way to be trapped in your room. ( no phone to reach lodge desk). There is a nice mosquito tent which they arrange for you at night. However the window curtains are voluminous and heavy which creeps me out because of dust, dustmites, etc. They could get rid if the 2 chairs and provide more counter-space for belongings. Some hooks would be nice. Must keep most clothing in your suitcase, very little space tp put stuff. Forget your wet towel. One towel rod in bathroom. Having never stayed in any of the other Amboseli lodges I dont know how this one compares, but Im not comfortable here. I have asked for a table fan for our room so I dont lie sweaty and sleepless all night. Hopefully it will help.

In terms of a lodge, it ticked all the boxes. The cottages were neat, clean and cosy. The restaurant was large and looked a bit jaded (unless that's the look). The staff was polite though not friendly. I was shocked to realise (at the end of our trip) that their souvenir shop had the highest prices compared to the ones at Serena Sweetwaters in Nanyuki town, Sarova lodge at Masai Mara and Nairobi town ! The airport shop had the same wares but at lower rates. Lesson learnt : Just because a hotel is located in the middle of the forest doesn't mean they'll sell at reasonable prices.

We stayed here on honeymoon 16 years ago but felt that the service needs upgrading . Dining room was really hot and made it unbearable to stay in there too long especially with some staff who seemed rather lost at what they were supposed to be doing . We attempted to eat outside but lack of covers for food and mosi candles ensured this was a less relaxed meal also . We explained we would run a bar tab and pay at the end but we were still pursued after most meals even though we were heading for the bar area - they made a bee line for one member of our party every time and this started to make us feel uncomfortable. The viewing platform was closed one night ..... no explanation given and very disappointing . Our room key got left in the jeep so I went to reception to get a spare to use rather than disturb our guide . Receptionist asked 2 men ( not on reception) in Swahili ,not English and then rung housekeeping ! I was told they would come along with key and escort me to the room . I explained I would be some time but didn’t want to get left in room without key ( due to monkeys) . They insisted on contacting our guide who came with key ! In my view re training is required in these areas as we couldn’t wait to leave as it made us all feel rather like criminals . A real shame but even our guide thought it was odd behaviour ....

The Lodge is ideally located within Amboseli Safari Park, out Lodge was fantastic with a view over the park where Kilimanjaro could be seen across the park and Water Buffalo grazed close to the Lodge. The resident monkeys made it feel being on Safari at all times, one so friendly tried to let itself in to the Lodge but just added to the wonderful memories. All staff were very friendly, the service excellent a special commendation must go to Joseph whom took care of us extremely well thankyou Rafiki. Total tranquility assured.
