El Convento is a very special retreat centre. Our ashtanga yoga is taught on a yoga deck that overlooks the Sierra de las Nieves natural park and our teacher, Nic Freeman, was trained and has been blessed to teach by the creator of Ashtanga yoga, K. Pattabhi Jois. Nic teaches from beginner to advanced students, so you do not need to be able to bend like a pretzel..We understand that when your family begins to grow, priorities change and so we are one of the few retreats world-wide that offer child-care during yoga classes and throughout the day so you can regain your balance. Our food is not the mass-produced and souless fare of some retreats but is vegetarian, organic and from the most local souce possible. Our chef, Bianca, has cooked all over the world and fills the table every day with freshly baked bread, salads, curries, daal, gazpacho or heavenly cake. Our accommodation is simple but beautiful with our bohemian bell-tents, tipis and huts. We don't believe that having a plasma television and private balcony will make your holiday more restful. Instead, we give you the mountains, the gardens, the terraces and the rivers to wander through, meditate on, socialise in or simply sit next to.We aren't damaging our environment by building ill-fitting dormitories or wasting vast amounts of water on poorly sourced plants. Instead, we use the clean mountain water, piped directly from the spring, power ourselves on solar energy only and encourage energy efficiency with both indoor and outdoor showers as well as contemporary and compost toilets. In all, we are not a manicured illusion of nature, we are part of the real deal. We would love to share what we consider to be the most beautiful place on the planet with you and so our prices are affordable and our yoga accessible to all.

If you’ve ever dreamed of disconnecting with the world, reconnecting with your family and finding an inner sense of peace El Convento is place you’ve been looking for. We were lucky enough to join Nic and the team for a family yoga retreat in August 2019 and the experience was transformational. Six months on we’re still practicing regularly and often think back to the magical week we spent at the convent. Amazing healthy food, swimming in the Bolsa, massages with the amazing Christie, family yoga fun with Emma, walks in the beautiful mountains, freshwater dips in the local river, refreshing outdoor showers, lazy afternoons reading in the shade and hours of uninterrupted peace. Whether your a regular yogi (like my wife) or an complete novice (like me) Nic’s Ashtanga practice was brilliantly pitched to challenge and stretch whilst giving a sense of progression and most importantly presence. As a family of three, with a curious and independent five year old daughter we can’t recommend El Convento enough.

We had a wonderful time at El Convento. Nic, Henriette and their team created an amazing experience - the yoga, the kids program, the food (my god the food), a couple of fun outings - all of which perfectly suited the stunning location. It was a perfect way to switch off from the wider world, come together as a family free from distractions, make some wonderful new friends and deepen our yoga practice.

This was our first family yoga retreat. Our daughter is 2 years old and not going to kindergarten and it was her first experience being under the care of strangers. It went very well. The retreat had a professional taking care of the children and abundant very friendly volunteers that really allowed parents to have the concentration on the morning yoga class. There was spontaneous help throughout the day also. In the retreat we had our first astanga yoga classes, and it was a very nice experience. We would like to have more yoga during the day, maybe an afternoon session could be added before the nice trips that the retreat organises. Food was great! Our room where adequate and environmentally friendly. The place itself is beautiful, in the middle of a national park, inside a private land that used to be part of a monastery. We would gladly visit again!

Our time in El Convento was wonderful, we relaxed, we laughed, we enjoyed good company, we practiced yoga with an accomplished and experienced teacher, we had great vegetarian food , nice trips, fresh water from the spring, clean air, refreshing swimms and nice hikes. The first thing i noticed was that the pictures don’t do the place justice. It is truly beautiful! The the landscape is spectacular, the old convent is the only other building you can see. It‘s a nature paradise! On the grounds there are mostly almond and olive trees, filled with crickets that chirp. You listen to the chirping of the crickets, relax in the shade on a bed or one of the lounging areas with the coulourful pillows. Everything is decorated with an astonishing attention to detail, here some flowers, there an oriental ornament. My daughter befriended another girl right away, and had a lot of fun with all the other kids and the staff. Everyday, after the small breakast, the adults would head to the roof terrace for the daily yoga practice and the kids would go up tot he bolsa – a fresh water pool. For me - a single mother - it was like heaven, my daughter wasn’t bored with the usual animation, but with creative games and nature adventure. It was a pleasure to see her run wild with the other kids without me thinking about any dangers of the city. Our wood hut, was really beautiful and i slept like a baby. The food was soooo delicous!!!! The Chef Virtudes is great! After the yoga we had the big breakfast and after a few hours lunch and dinner in the evening, and everytime she would create something wonderful. The trips are very well selected and organised: We were on both trips. The first one was a picnic by a beautiful river, after a refreshing swim in the river we ate Virtudes food with great relish. The kids were busy trying to catch some fish and they actually succeded in the end. The second trip was to Ronda, a magnificient city, with the spectacular bridge Puente Nuevo towering 120 m above the canyon floor. I enjoyed walking with my daughter through the old town and do some shopping and sightseeing. We will be back!!! Thank you very much Nic and Henriette for this memorable holiday! Best regards, Monika and Victoria Schwartz

We attended the family yoga retreat in August 2017. On a whim we booked it after a very stressful year and despite being anxious about taking three young children (5, 3, 5 months) we had the most incredible time and met some truly great people. Nic and Henriette went out of their way to accommodate us and especially helped me out at times with my young baby, meaning I could have more time doing the yoga I so badly wanted to do. Our elder two had such a lovely time with the childminders who were great fun and made pals with the other children and they formed a great little tribe running around. It was also incredibly peaceful having time in the afternoons just the five of us without any distractions and just simple, beautiful nature. We have very fond memories of the trip - it was definitely worth every minute. Don't expect incredibly luxurious accommodation but do expect excellent yoga teaching, OUTSTANDING food, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and some genuinely kind, holistic people.

I'd always had a dream of a family yoga holiday, but on investigation, it became apparent that they are not (yet) much of 'a thing'. However Nic, his own family and their team are way ahead of the curve here, having been providing pretty much exactly what I had imagined/hoped for, over many years already. When my wife found the website and it all looked so lovely, we agreed we simply had to go. In so many ways El Convento surpassed our fantasy of how ideal a week being totally off-grid, with daily stretching and aimless family hanging-out time could be. From the moment of arrival, the pace of our London lives was dropped, and days became about picking almonds for the talented chef to transform into dinner, discussing our yoga challenges or perhaps wandering up to the old monastery to take a refreshing dip. Every day was a highlight, but the guided walks, the swim up the river, a visit to Ronda and of course, the serene and peaceful daily sunrise yoga all stand out. They've got it just right here. They know how to make magic. Hearing the sound of the kids singing and laughter getting louder as they slowly make their way down the hill for their 'second breakfast', while the adults all lie in shavasana, is close to holiday perfection. The other guests and the staff quickly became part of an extended family, but there's plenty of space to have a quiet time too. And being taught yoga by the children on the final evening proved to be yet more perfectly orchestrated magic. One day I'm convinced family yoga will be offered all over the place, but by carving out their niche here, Nic and co. have managed to perfect my dream concept already.

The couple Nic and Henriette have created a wonderful space among olive trees, having renovated an old monastry that serves as the hub of the estate. I had been on the look out for a different holiday offering serenity yoga and family time and at El Convento these wishes were met to the fullest! I had booked a bell tent as our place to sleep and it was super cosy and my daughter of now 7 loved it! Also it felt very connected to nature with a amazing night sky to gaze on in the evenings. NIcs yoga routine in the morning was perfect catering to every level in an Ashtanga series - combining elements of the first and second series. He compassionatly guided the the group through practice every morning. The days were relaxed and the kids on the retreat became good friends and played all day long, allthough the ages differed a lot. The ambience was warm and welcoming and Henriette talked to every one of us making sure we had everything we needed. The food was all vegetarian and delicious with extra treats from the wild growing fig trees around! We spent a week in beginning of July 2017 and allthough it was hot we managed fine taking dips in the fresh and cool water reservoir close by. The other guests were amazing people with so interesting backgrounds and everyone contributed to making this a very special holiday! My daughter still talks warmly about the time and the firends she made there! So look no futher - this is a perfect space for yoga, healing and connection.

We came to this very special place for the first time in June for a family yoga retreat and it was really magical. Nic the yoga teacher was very inspiring. He catered for all levels and you could go at your own pace or try more advanced poses. I felt really amazing after doing yoga for a few hours every morning and my husband also really enjoyed it. It was his first yoga retreat and usually this wouldn't be "his thing", however he really enjoyed it and would certainly be back. It was lovely that we could do yoga and our 2 daughters were doing activities and then we could spend the afternoon together; walking, swimming and playing, It suited everyone. The views are breath taking and the natural water from the mountains makes you feel young and vibrant:)! We've also kept in contact with some of the families as you meet like minded lovely people. Great way to spend a vacation. Would highly recommend.

We had an amazing experience here, went me my husband and our first baby (who was 9 months during the retreat) and came back renewed and grateful for all experienced! The place is so peaceful and beautiful, everyone in the El Convento team was lovely with us; our baby and the kids were so well taken care of while adults joined the yoga sessions. Food is delicious. The yoga excellent and everybody could fit, advanced and basic level students improving at their levels - I learned and enjoyed a lot and have been practicing regularly since then. The hosts Nic, Henriette and their family are indeed very special people, and the families who came (some for 2nd or 3rd time) very nice to meet as well. This was a lot more then a holiday trip, and more like a gift to body, mind and soul :) We picked this place after reading many reviews online, I would warmly recommend and definitely like to come back. Thank you so much for the experience and more importantly what we brought home with us!!!

My son and I had a fantastic week in August 2017. My son had an amazing time, running wild with the other children, living/playing as children did before the advent of screens/technology. He was extremely well looked after and loved his morning trips up the hill while we were doing yoga. As a single parent, it was ideal as we both had company, I had relaxation/'me' time and he was entertained. The food was amazing, both wholesome and tasty. It inspired me in how I cook now on my return. The staff were amazing too, friendly and welcoming. I could do with a trip like this every few months to re-charge.
